#ArtAdventCalendar Day 4. My love for #paperArt started after a burnout as I slowly turned back to life with turning #paperBeads. I became so fascinated by #paper that I started to design jewellery combining glass art, textile elements and paper yarn. In a one-week process with several steps, the paper beads become as hard as softwood and waterproof. Meanwhile, I also build plants and insects made of paper ... stay tuned!

#jewelry #JewelryArt #glassbeads #jewellery #ArtJewellery #beads #glassArt

My first paper beads were rolled spirals and a round pendant. They are made with book pages. One spiral is black and white, and the other (made with a coloured magazine page) has green and brown nuances. The pendant shows indecipherable fractal letters. The rose red and greenish colour comes from the napkin technique.
Part of a collier in pea-green paper yarn with a floral ornament and leaf-like elements. The paper yarn is combined with Japanese art glass beads.
A mixed media collier in black, grey and dark red. It has a black and white Japanese paper pendant and big dark grey paper beads which look sculpted. This effect comes from rolling paper stripes by hand which are cut especially for the 3D effect. Between different glass beads: grey round and lustred rocailles, mat black cubes and a precious speciality in red and grey. These so-called Picasso glass beads are made in limited editions by manufactures.
A round, flat, slightly curved paper pendant on a leather strap, in black, white and red-brown with gold. The red-brown half is a rust print, the other half is a flower print. In the middle a stripe of an old book page. Irregular spots where the paper is gilded. The wild stitches are made with the finest black paper yarn. They take up the pattern of a long rectangular bone bead hanging down from the disc. It is white and shows three black crosses and boundary lines. It is handmade.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 3. I am fascinated by #paperArt. #Paper is one of the most versatile materials. It can be cut, shaped, coloured, embossed, and even altered to resemble fabric, embroidered and felted. In a special mixture with plaster of Paris, it becomes a modelling clay. So I can live out my love of #archaeological finds. Inspired by #neolithic #goddesses. Paperclay with hand-grinded ochre and ultramarine

Ultramarine, spindle-shaped figure, reduced to a tiny head and a bulbous torso. Painted with golden spirals and lightning symbols.
Reclining female torso in ochre with gold painting, inspired by statuettes from the European Cucuteni culture, 4500 BCE. I find the ochre on one of our mountains as rocks and grind the stones to pigment by hand.

OMG!

Stop the presses!

I've won one "emergency pizza."

"What do you mean 'stop the presses?'"

I mean that you have to stop the printing presses.

"Printing presses?"

Yes, those presses that are used to print newspapers.

"Newspapers?"

:catthinking: Go to The Washington Post website and imagine that printed on paper.

"Paper?"

Tell me you know what paper is!

"Oh, yeah. That thing I use to wipe my rear end with."

:headache: That's toilet paper. Newspaper can be used as toilet paper, but not the other way around.

"So what about your emergency pizza?"

Damn... I don't remember.

Long-term risk of cardiovascular side-effects following attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment with sympathomimetic amines

https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/article/44/Supplement_2/ehad655.2760/7390816?login=false

Good Interpretation by PhD with strong critique :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiXK8rHkVLg

TLDR by LLM:

1. Background: Study on cardiovascular safety of long-term use of sympathomimetic amines in ADHD treatment.

2. Purpose: Investigates risks of heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, and stroke in patients on these drugs.

3. Methodology: Danish national registers, monitoring 77,420 patients over 18 (1998-2020) prescribed ADHD medication for cardiovascular outcomes.

4. Results: High dosage treatment linked to increased risks of heart failure, stroke, but not acute coronary syndrome, compared to discontinued treatment.

5. Conclusion: ADHD treatment is necessary, but awareness of potential cardiovascular risks is important for risk factor mitigation and treatment decisions.

An interesting gift guide in this week's Noted from Jillian Hess explores the inexpensive notebook/pad options favored by creative people along with some reflections on their process.

This quote from Toni Morrison resonated with me:

I don’t have an outline. Sometimes I sit down and write out what could be called a précis, except that it goes on and on and on. It’s like a plot, but it isn’t; it’s just things I think about the people and what happens. Notes. They’re notes, I suppose, but sometimes they have continuity.

I meant that #literally - correspondence on #paper in paper envelopes.

As for #email encryption, it's still too difficult for the average person to set up and use (correctly). Even if you're capable of it, you cannot assume the people you communicate with will be equally proficient.

So anything truly #confidential I do not send by email, ever. Then to minimize the remaining risk, I run my own mail service. #Gmail still has half my email, because they have half of everyone's email.

I actually built this thing and it works exactly as described on that Wiki page! 👍 But you’ll have to try a few times to get the scale of the printout to fit the diameter or the tube. It needs to fit exactly. It won’t work otherwise. I needed to scale the printout to 99% to get it right.

Important: Follow the instructions exactly!

And yes, I used a #Pringles roll for it because it has the right diameter. 😝 Still not really a fan of that stuff. 🤢

As you might have read my posts in the past, the answer is clearly: not at all. But it is easy these days to feel there’s an existential crisis going on. Have we been here before? Why, yes! This very insightful paper [1] walked us through the many evolutions/revolutions that have happened in the field of Machine Translation, which had transitioned over the years from rule-based, statistical-based, to the era of Neural MT and LLMs.

Type Checking Type Classes (Tobias Nipkow, Christian Prehofer)
#PLT #paper #typetheoryerence problem for a system with type classes as in the functional programming language Haskell. Type classes are an extension of ML-style polymorphism with overloading. We generalize Milner’s work on polymorphism by introducing a separate context constraining the type variables in a typing judgement. This leads to simple type inference systems and algorithms which closely resemble those for ML. In particular we present a new unification algorithm which is an extension of syntactic unification with constraint solving. The existence of principal types follows from an analysis of this unification algorithm.”

An updated (and expanded) introduction:

My main interests are written communication, teaching writing, and education, particularly as they relate to productive disagreement explored in various contexts: rhetoric, organizational & workplace communication, organizational learning, training, research, emergent strategy, coalition work, and facilitation.

Throughout, I try to attend to the roles played by power differentials and oppressive and exploitative social systems, seeking insights from critical scholarship and intersectional practice.

My approaches are described in detail here: https://fromtherostra.com/research/ And in a shorter post here: https://fromtherostra.com/2023/03/10/when-disagreement-is-inclusive/

Beyond these main interests, I also try to stay engaged with historical and contemporary nonreligious, freethought, Humanist, and secular perspectives, dabbling in recovering historical perspectives that reveal more diversity than is sometimes assumed to exist as well as points of productive interplay among religious and nonreligious viewpoints.

My reading for fun is mostly sci-fi—I particularly enjoy the subgenre of persons and artificial/technological intelligences working together to solve problems, such as Becky Chamber’s fantastic A Closed and Common Orbit, which help cleanse my palate from the all-too-non-fictional and terrible “AI” hype and “AI” deployment in today’s world.

Finally, I enjoy discussing stationery, notebooks, and the analog writing tools by which we materialize our ideas along with how we balance digital and analog methods.

This week I wrote down notes on a #paper titled AI Art and its Impact on Artists (https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3600211.3604681)

It covers a history of image generation with ML, the impact it has on artists, and an ethical and legal contextualization of it.

Very proud to have contributed to the #paper led by Tamara Ben-Ari et al. from @labos1point5 analysing the ~ 130 000 #academic #travels from ~160 #research units in #France over 2019 and discussing their #carbon emissions. Most importantly, the paper reports various #mitigation strategies and quantify their potential for reducing their #CarbonFootprint.

Histograms of travel distances (right) and associated GHG emissions (left)for car (blue), train (green) and plane (red) travels from 137,081 academic travels in 159 research units in France in 2019. Box plots whiskers extends to ±1.5x the inter-quartile range) independently for each travel modality. The insert is a zoom of the distributions of GHG emissions for cars and trains below 1500 km. Cumulative percentage of the number of trips and GHG emissions are presented as bold purple continuous lines.
Mitigation potential of modal shift from plane to train as a function of distance. Vertical lines correspond to median time travel by train and rectangles express the uncertainty related to train speed, with 150 km/h±60 km/h. The three numbers indicate key routes in France with 1: Paris-Toulouse, 2. Paris-Montpellier and 3. Paris-Nice, contributing respectively to 14%, 7% and 16% of total domestic GHG emission from air travel.
Percentage of total (plane, train, car) travel-induced GHG reductions from single or combined options. Colors represent the intensity in GHG mitigation potential with yellow options offering the greatest potential. Each column corresponds to a specific modal shift policy, characterized by a threshold distance(and average travel time), below which a complete shift from plane to train is assumed. Modal shift options are always applied first. Each line corresponds to a specific air travel moderation policy applied at research unit scale. Moderation options are expressed in missions (equivalent to a round trip) and modal shift are considered per segment (equivalent to a one way trip). Options which correspond to actual per-capita per-year research unit median are presented at the third modality in each moderation option (i.e.,1 conference every 3yrs, 1 trip every 4 years, 5,800 km and 1 trip per yr).

This week's notes are on a #paper by David Woods on the four definitions of "Resilience" used in #ResilienceEngineering

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/276139783_Four_concepts_for_resilience_and_the_implications_for_the_future_of_resilience_engineering

The four terms are related to resilience as:
- rebound
- robustness
- graceful extensibility
- sustained adaptability

Specifically, the two later categories are those that yield more interesting insights.

This week's #paper is the Strategic Agility Gap by David Woods: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-25639-5_11

It puts together a lot of the concepts he has written about in the past, particularly around the need of organizations to balance growth in capabilities with the ability to adjust to the changes they enable, and how sustained adaptability becomes a requirement in these environments.

Figure 1: The strategic agility gap. A graph where the x-axis is technical progress (and time) and the y-axis quality/impact. An arrow curving upwards and to the right is labelled 'pace of societal change/needs'; one in the same direction but curving far more smoothly below it is labelled 'current trajectory'. In between both arrows is an 'accelerated trajectory' dotted arrow curving upwards. The space between the bottom and middle arrow is the strategic agility; the space between the middle arrow and the top arrow is the strategic agility gap.

And here's the second layer, all glued down. I'm really loving this!

It's just slapped together for the Noe Valley Art Festival tomorrow, but this is giving me all kinds of ideas.

And I bet my quilting friends will like this too :)

Hello Fediverse! Since I x-ed out X, I thought it was time I updated my #introduction:

My name is Stevie (She / Her / Mrs).

I am a #Jesus following, neurodivergent #SoftwareDeveloper who loves #science (from #space to #quantum), #stationary (from #paper to #fountainPens), and #stories (in all their forms and #writing too).

Sometimes I like to post lyrics that speak to me, more often I put my foot in my mouth, but I always try to promote being authentic rather than anonymous.

From analog to digital: a snapshot of my process moving handwritten notes over to a digital (and more easily searchable) format

Several years back, I started storing notes in file folders punched for two-prong fasters. On the left side are a handful of sheets for noting overarching themes and connections. On the right side are detailed notes from specific sources.

As I move the notes into a digital space, I am condensing and summarizing, but direct quotes remain plentiful. After all, whether my notes are on paper or in a computer, they are always part of a commonplace approach.

And while much of the paper is being recycled, some will always remain.

A manila file folder laid open on a table. At the top of each side of the folder are two holes punched for duo-prong style fasteners. On the right, the fastener has been removed leaving yellow lined ruled sheets with handwritten notes from a book: page numbers are listed on the left margin. The notes mention Therborn and Giddens' approach to ideology. On the left, a duo-prong holds several sheets with a white piece of unlined paper on top displaying a mind map with org. comm. at the root with four branches: power, silence, upward comm, and distortion.
A screenshot of the Obsidian notes app window: black background with white text and three panels. The left panel shows folder hierarchy with Mumby, D. K. (1998) file selected. The center panel has two lists: Therborn's 3 modes of ideology and Giddens' 3 functions of ideology. The right panel displays "No headings found."

Another attempt at making paper... it turned out really well. I made a larger 3D printed mold and deckle and experimented with adding in bits of shredded paper to the pulp. (See the post for more photos.)

this week's #paper was going over an old classic, Jo Freeman's Tyranny of Structurelessness (https://www.jofreeman.com/joreen/tyranny.htm).

She covers problems around structureless groups, and then ways in which groups could more effectively be structured for democratic purposes without necessarily replicating existing structures.

I made a batch of handmade recycled paper today. I can really only do 10 sheets with my current set up. They’ll need to dry for a day or two (or three) and then I’ll put them in the hydraulic press to flatten them. (Kitchen sponge for scale.)

9/ But LLMs can certainly help in bringing in domain-specific or commonsense knowledge in a data-driven way. In conclusion: why not both [4]? :-)

8/ There are surely other benefits of using KGs to collect and organize knowledge. They do not require costly retraining to update, therefore can be updated more frequently to remove obsolete or incorrect facts. They allow more trackable reasoning and can offer better explanations. They make fact editing more straightforward and accountable (think of GDPR) compared to model editing [3].

7/ Their result shows that even #GPT4 achieves only 23.7% hit@1 on average, even when it scores up to 50% precision@1 using the earlier proposed LAMA benchmark (screenshot). Interestingly, smaller models like BERT can outperform GPT4 on bidirectional, compositional, and ambiguity benchmarks, indicating bigger is not necessarily better.

6/ In each benchmark, instead of asking LLMs to retrieve masked words from a cloze statement, it also asks the LLMs to retrieve all of the implied facts and compute scores accordingly (screenshot).

5/ Instead, they focus on more intricate topological and semantic attributes of facts, and propose 9 benchmarks testing modern LLMs’ capability in retrieving facts with the following attributes: symmetry, asymmetry, hierarchy, bidirectionality, compositionality, paths, entity-centricity, bias and ambiguity (screenshots).

4/ But is that all? A recent paper revisits this question and offers a different take [2]. The authors believe just testing isolated fact retrieval is not sufficient to demonstrate the power of KGs.

3/ The result shows that even without specialized training, language models such as BERT-large can already retrieve decent amount of facts from their weights (screenshot).
