I have found it challenging to identify and alter my core stress behaviors. As a kid (and to my chagrin as an adult) when I get flustered I get aggressive - which is not useful or effective. Intentionally shifting to a calm, centered, rational behavior is an ongoing practice of mine. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I fall back. However, knowing my "default" setting has been helpful. It allows me to exercise self-compassion when I "screw up".

@davidgarywood Thanks for the detailed blogpost! I've been inspired by your router pattern since 1.0. It's been quite instrumental to develop techniques to create “building blocks” of functionality that can easily move between apps or help reduce conflicts when working on the same app by multiple people. Another upside is that it's been effortless to introduce to teams who are not necessarily into following hard patterns or help more junior devs organize their code without having to read 10 books and some hard-to-digest wisdom about state management.

Needless to say, I'm a huge fan 🤩.

All-timber entry staircase to the Wieliczka salt mine in Poland

Looking over the edge of a bannister straight down the very narrow stair-well of the all-timber entry stairs to the Wieliczka salt mine. The staircase is so deep that the vertical timber beams at the ends of each flight, starting at the left and right of frame, disappear at the vanishing point in the middle, and appear to join at the bottom of the well. Above and below the supports, successive runs of bannisters also shrink into the distance. Occasional hands grasping the bannisters provide some scale and orientation.

Last shot of the gorge for now. This is a very wide panorama, may not fit on some platforms.
Things to note are the vast expanse of the floodplain, compared to the not-inconsiderable width of the river, although in this shot it’s deceptively small. It’s worth visualising the same scene when the water is running at the high-water mark along the cliffs…
The second thing to note is the landscape behind the gorge walls. It’s impossibly craggy, rugged and eroded, a maze of gullies and peaks, almost impassable. The vantage point for this shot has practically no flat areas at all, it’s all just fractal mountains, accessible only by a tortuous climb.

A very wide panorama of part of the Geikie gorge on the Fitzroy river, taken from the top of one wall, looking across the floodplain and river to the opposite wall. The shot runs from one horseshoe bend in the river at left, and follows it across the frame to where it curves back gently and disappears behind the foreground near wall at the right, a distance of over a kilometre. For most of its length the opposite side is composed of high sandstone cliffs, behind which is more heavily eroded sandstone formation. At the inner, opposite bend on the left is a wide, sandy “beach”, where the river has slowed and the erosion is weaker. In front of the vantage point on the cliff stretches out a huge, golden sandy floodplain, six or seven times the current width of the river, hundreds of metres wide, all well below the white high-water line on the cliffs, and all of which would be underwater in a flood. Briefly visible in the foreground is the extremely rugged and eroded sandstone formations of the near gorge wall.

A more panoramic view of a section of the Geikie gorge. The high-water mark of the river in flood can clearly be seen on the gorge wall in the demarcation between light stone and its native, weathered oranges and dark ochres.

A shot from water-level across the calm Fitzroy river to the escarpment of the Geikie gorge wall opposite. The frame is divided in half at the waterline, with an almost perfect reflection of the gorge and blue sky above in the river water. The gorge wall is an imposing, almost vertical sheer cliff of weathered sandstone, thirty or forty metres high, and very rugged. The high-water mark of the river in flood can clearly be seen on the gorge wall in the demarcation between light stone and its native, weathered oranges and dark ochres. A small tour boat can be seen near the far bank, dwarfed by the wall, giving a sense of scale.

Water-level closeup of the heavily eroded and scoured sandstone wall of Geikie gorge. The dark green water of the Fitzroy river runs under a heavily undercut outcrop of pale, almost white sandstone, its original orange almost completely washed away. Slightly higher up the wall there are numerous rounded hollows and further outcroppings and strong horizontal cuts, showing both faults in the rock and witness marks of heavier erosion. The wall as a whole is monumental, but there are very few sharp edges, nearly every surface has been smoothed by the rush of water.

(Growing on the south side of the north gulley on the Bald Knob property)

An almost vertical view up the trunk and into the overlapping bright green canopy of a large rainforest tree. The tree’s trunk occupies nearly one third of the frame at the bottom, and dwindles as it soars up to its peak at the centre of the frame, with branches reaching out at irregular intervals. The sky above is clear blue and sunny, and the light shines brightly through the canopy leaves of the tree and the overlapping canopies of several other surrounding trees, making a sea of different greens around the dark, central trunk.

Red-lined looper, Crypsiphona ocultaria

The underside of a small, strongly patterned moth, seen at night through glass. The moth’s body is white, and its wings are predominantly white with an outer white fringe, however just inside the fringe is a line of dark brown with white dots, more pronounced on the upper wings, and immediately inside that on the lower wings, a prominent red band. The upper wings also sport two black dots, the larger just inside the brown line, the ssmaller closer to the body. Although the moth is small, the unusually bright red line makes it stand out.

Two rainbow lorikeets perched, side by side, in identical poses on a palm inflorescence, eating fruit. Both birds are completely upside-down, heads pointing down, and only their tails cocked out at identical angles. The palm inflorescence is large and extremely dense, hundreds of yellow strands hanging down like thickly braided hair from a stem arcing out at right-angles from the trunk. In total it is much larger than the birds. Also in view is part of the trunk, and a profusion of green palm leaves and blue sky.

Jasmine wall, Brisbane riverwalk

A literal wall of flowering jasmine. The entire frame is composed of over ten square meters of vertically hanging jasmine, in flower, forming an almost uniform blanket composed of thousands of individual white flowers.

This is a bit of an aberration in the dogwalking series, since they’re nearly always straight photography, and my non-dogwalking (as distinct from dog non-walking or non-dog walking) posts may be less representational or more deliberately artistic. Am I still talking?
Anyway, here’s a plain old iPhone6s shot with some help from Lightroom.

Fallen, yellowed fig tree leaves lying randomly on the ground exactly as they’ve fallen.
The leaves are a very uniform, clean yellow colour and mostly of similar size, so the strongly patterned appearance has been enhanced by reducing the background pavement to nearly black and slightly boosting the luminance of the leaves, resulting in a slightly surreal pattern of yellow on black.
