Beyond the treetops at Bybee Lake this morning, stream after stream of #pelicans climbing into the sky and coursing toward the Columbia. Several consecutive flocks of over 100 gigantic white birds; tallying by 10s and 20s, I lost all count at a low estimate of 600 individuals. One flock circled back, gliding directly overhead. Without a single wingbeat - yet the still air struck a penetrating, ventriloquistic HISS across their feathers as they passed.

This is a sight frequently seen when pelicans are diving for food. Seagulls, being the opportunists they are, will often hover around hoping for an escapee from the pelicans pouch. This one took it a step further and positioned himself to better grab a tasty morsel.

Brown pelicans seem to have made a solid comeback along the California coast, though I understand that they are susceptible to the avian flu that has affected many wild bird species this season. They are usually easy to find along the California coast, where they can often be spotted gliding along next to bluffs or just above the surf. (Photography hint: Look for places along bluffs and peninsulas where they pass close to the land.)

This is a reasonably sized pod of #pelicans sitting at flood stage on a tiny hunk of dirt sticking out into Sand Creek. Really impressive flyers and there only here en mass for a few weeks on their way north. The river is roaring, way up it's banks and apparently flooding roads downstream due a couple of days of rain. We have good water management though so it will be fine tomorrow most likely.

Migrating pelicans at the marsh. They may look awkward on land - in the air, they are superb and graceful flyers.
A lone Brown Pelican photographed in breeding plumage is seen standing on the beach at the shore. Out of mating season, the head is yellow and the back of the neck is white but when love season starts, the neck turns a rich, chocolate brown.

I was moving to various places at the lake trying for closer images of the American White Pelicans. This scene surprised me with almost all of the Pelicans facing west. Perhaps the early light was too much. It was 8:38am and the sun was rather bright.

Been a little bit since i’ve posted a #photo so I thought I’d share one I took awhile ago that I enjoy. Taken semi nearby where I live, tons of #pelicans visit every year, and apparently this species grows a “horn” during mating season haha, but I really love how the lighting turned out 🤘 Really looking forward to this spring where I can get back out and use my camera again more regularly 📸

Due to ongoing drought the lake was getting lower all the time. Places closer to the shore were way too shallow for the #Pelicans to successfully fish. So shallow, this one kicked up mud instead of just a splash of water they make.
