Well, that was unexpected! Yeats’ regular spacing of long lines interacts with the serpentine maze pattern to make a shape… not unlike a swan’s neck.

pretty interesting to think about how HPGL's simple ASCII syntax was such a differentiating feature at the time.
I finally got the HP 7470A pen plotter up and plotting. It's an HPIB model so I used the PlotAdapter project (https://github.com/rhalkyard/plotadapter) which uses an Arduino to convert HPIB to serial/USB, and it worked first try. I have a lot to learn on how to create/convert graphics to HPGL for it. #penplotter

Latest #penplotter piece in progress. First plot of a new concept I'm playing with. I'm not sure I'm "done" with the design but it's always fun to watch the robot draw.
Introducing #vsvg-sketch, a new #rustlang-based interactive sketch environment for #penplotter #generative #art.
It's like #vsketch, but in Rust. So:
- it's *fast*
- it's (soon) web ready (via wasm)
- it's based on a far superior stack for fast development (mainly #egui + #wgpu)
As with #vsketch, the interactive UI is auto-generated based on the sketch's declared parameters (here thanks to Rust's powerful macros).
Still very much WIP, but already usable—feedback welcome!
I decided to start experimenting with paint and plotting. I started with watercolor, and I honestly have no idea what I’m doing. 😅
The attached images are a random test based on a previous plot, and a start on one of my Subdivisions images. I need to keep experimenting, but it seems like an interesting direction.

Changed the comb pattern for the CNC thread pictures to have better means of alignment - I use the #penplotter to draw where the comb should be and then align the print to this, I added holes to allow more precise angular alignment.
The new comb works well but the motion still needs tweaking, I'm going to have to be more careful about how the thread is wound around the pins. This one had just failed when a loop failed to wrap around a pin.
#penplotter CNC string threading continues: a #3dprinting loom? comb? seems to work but the string gets caught on the tip of the thread dispenser when it crosses them. The whole thing was a single shape so I'll have to change the pre-processor to only do the wind around each pin as pen down, the "weaving" moves will be pen up traverses to clear the previous threads, which I'll have to slow down a lot to avoid being scary.
This is the spool holder, the part that fits into the open holder has the same dimensions as the pen I was using to plot the pin locations to avoid registration problems.
At this point I've just noticed that:
a) the pins are too close together for this to fit between
b) I thought that 200 pins would be a good idea and not a terrible chore
c) the pins are too tall to clear the pen holder anyway
Let's 3d print an array of pins instead

After some searching, I found a dataset of individuals walking in C3D format. I eventually converted that into CSV so I can work with it easier. Then I fumbled with trying to convert 3D points to 2D points. But kept at it and got to this, which made it all worth while!
