"On Windows, I experienced a lot of micro stutters in games, no matter what driver version I installed on my GPU.
Doesn't matter if it's a completely fresh install of Windows, then I only install Steam and 1 game. I would still get constant micro stutters.
The same thing happened with a different system entirely, different motherboard, GPU, and CPU. Even changed what HDD or SDD the games and steam were installed on. Made no difference.
They were so bad to the point that it hurt my performance in comparative games
BUT WHEN I SWITCHED TO LINUX, all of those issues were instantly fixed. ZERO micro stutters, better frame rate, better everything.
My games have never felt better and more butter smooth. Literally a game changer."

In my pursuit of an alloc-free version of Voorhees, I did some spelunking into the guts of System.IO.TextWriter.
Turns out it does multiple string copies per call. If you do stringification yourself and write the result character by character, you can avoid it all.
This brought Voorhees allocations in a Write() benchmark from 4.1MB to 0. For the same benchmark, LitJson used 10MB, and Newtonsoft.JSON used 6.5MB of temp GC'd heap (‼) allocs.

One of the weird things about revising Optimizing #Java is how it reveals at what an odd point in time we wrote the 1ed.
In 2017-8 it was still viable to write about #performance & #optimization primarily from the POV of a single #JVM / server. In 2023, that is very much not true.
The last 5-6 years really have brought a profound change in how we develop & deploy #software - this has also acted to make performance more of a Dark Art again. Hopefully that's something we'll be able to help with.

Some might not be aware that there is not only `.clear()` for clearing the Vec and keeping allocated memory, but there is also `drain()`:
