To prepare for a new rock core drilling by Mars rover Perseverance,
1. The Bit Carousel (BC) is rotated until the appropriate drill bit (there are 9 bits of 3 different kinds) is positioned at the bottom.
2. An empty tube is inserted into the hollow bit by the robotic Sample Handling Assembly.
3. The BC is rotated to bring the bit+tube to the top.
4. The bit+tube assembly is extracted by the drill apparatus on the robotic arm.

This video and animation from NASA shows the operation of the Bit Carousel (BC) and the Sampling and Caching System (SCS) of Mars rover Perseverance.

Starting at the 1:28 mark, the robotic arm deposits a sample tube into the BC upper door. The next 35 seconds shows the journey of the sample from that point onward until it is safely deposited in the storage area.

The Sample and Caching System is one of the most complex robotic systems ever built.

The image in post #1 was taken by Perseverance's SHERLOC WATSON camera, which is located on the turret at the end of the rover's robotic arm. The robotic arm was most likely oriented as shown in the image below, taken by the Left Navigation Camera (Navcam). The camera on the turret is facing the Bit Carousal upper door on the front side of the rover.

How does the Bit Carousel move sample tubes in vertical orientation underneath Mars rover Perseverance to the upper door in horizontal orientation?

It's quite simple and ingenious. The BC wheel axis is tilted 45° from vertical. The drill bit holders are tilted outwards by 45° from the plane of the wheel. Voilà, the bit holders are oriented vertically when rotated to the bottom and horizontally when rotated to the top! The tubes slide in and out of the drill bits.

This is another graphic focusing on the Mars rover Perseverance's Bit Carousel (BC) and the Sampling and Caching System (SCS).

The image perspective is from underneath the rover, hence objects look upside down.

Besides the large Bit Carousel wheel with drill bits and the sample tubes, the SCS contains an inspection station and a tube sealing instrument. There is a robotic arm (SHA) underneath the SCS that moves tubes around.

Here is a graphic of Mars rover Perseverance's Bit Carousel (BC) and the Sampling and Caching System (SCS).

It shows the upper Bit Carousel door, the circular BC itself and the rest of the SCS located in the rover's underbelly.

Drill bits are mounted on the BC. Empty and filled sample tubes are located in vertical orientation underneath. The BC transports drill bits and sample tubes back and forth from the lower BC area to the upper BC door.

One of the tasks #Perseverance and #Ingenuity had to occupy themselves with, during the occultation, was to observe sand grains being blown by the wind.

Here is an animation showing grain motion between Sol 976, 15:29:29 and Sol 983, 15:30:41. The dark frame shows the numerous grains that moved.

Mars rover Perseverance is alive and well!
After a two week hiatus, since Nov 11, when comms with Mars orbiters and rovers was blocked due to the Mars solar conjunction, images are starting to arrive.
Below are two similar images, one taken on Nov 10, the other on Nov 18, when Mars was directly behind the Sun.

The two images look almost identical except for a small difference in shading and shadow and the missing pixels in the Nov 10 image.

The first images from #Perseverance after the Mars solar occultation reached Earth today, Nov 27, 2023 at 07:37:23 UTC. The communication hiatus caused by the occultation lasted 13 days, 16 hours, and 11 minutes. Current separation between Earth and Sun, as seen from the surface of Mars, is approximately 1° 35'.

Tosol, Sol 978 of the #Mars2020 mission, Earth is an apparent 18' of a degree away from the edge of the Sun, as seen from Jezero, Mars. It'll be interesting to observe when the first images relayed by the Mars orbiters will make it through the Sun induced noise to Earth. That should come a lot earlier than the 2° angular distance #NASA has set as a prerequisite before sending again commands to the rovers.

According to #Stellarium, Earth came out of occultation (for those on Mars it's Earth's solar occultation) around midnight tosol, Sol 977, and now is moving away from the Sun by the minute.

Here is the current situation, as it would appear to someone (or something) staring at the Sun setting behind the crater's western rim in Jezero, Mars, if there was no atmosphere, and the Sun wasn't so bright, of course:

The effect of noisy communications with the Mars orbiters due to the upcoming solar conjunction seems rather obvious, although the details of how exactly it affects packets carying image information is unknown to me.

The #MarsHelicopter is about 600m away and not visible by #Perseverance at its current location at RMC 46.0000. Despite that, it was able to send a color RTE image to the rover, so obviously the UHF radio link is workable, even without LOS.

The visibility plot below shows that Jurabi Point is visible from #Ingenuity's location, so the radio link should be expected to be even better, if/when the rover gets there.

In Martian territory, #Ingenuity is ready for its next #Flight63, expected to take place tomorrow. Direction? Exactly opposite to Jurabi Point, right in the middle of nowhere, 574m (!) SW of its present location.

It flies to the upper end of the image in multiple steps and halts at them for a few seconds. Once the Helicopter is airborne, white whirlwinds can be seen moving along on the hills in the background.

Scientists are excited that Mars rover Perseverance has reached the edge of an area rich in carbonates.

On Earth, carbonates typically form in the shallow shoals of freshwater or alkaline lakes. It is hypothesized that 3 billion years ago, the lapping waters of a lake in Jezero crater deposited this carbonate layer.

Also, carbonates are an excellent medium for preserving traces of ancient microbial life, if it existed.

How do the wind sensors on Mars rover Perseverance work?

The MEDA Wind Sensor consists of 2 horizontal booms placed 1.5 m above the ground and 120° angular separation.

Each boom contains 6 transducer boards, each with 4 heated dice and one cold dice.

The power needed to maintain a constant temperature delta at the hot dice is a function of the wind speed. Power measurements for the various dices are used to compute wind speed and direction.

Mars rover Perseverance now has moved further west to the Ningaloo quadrangle, an area named after the Ningaloo Marine Park, a world-heritage site in coastal Western Australia.

The Jezero crater rim, about 3 km away, is now visible more clearly.

Rock core sample #21 was sealed and stowed away yesterday.

The weekend flyer #MarsHelicopter plans a 418m #Flight56 for Sat, Aug 25 2023. That's a long flight, suggesting that #Ingenuity's batteries are in good health.

The map shows a possible landing at the edge of Mandu Wall, more than 10m higher than the ground to the west; the view from such a location could be spectacular 🙂 .
