Anyone try it yet?

Just saw one of my fave lenses on sale for Black Friday - Sony 50mm f/1.8 (fine, it's cheap even when not on sale)! I really like it for its fast aperture and its size.

It's the lens I used to shoot one of my fave (and probably most stolen by media in Hong Kong that don't know anything about copyright!) portraits.

Fine, the lens has chromatic aberration, and that bokeh is a bit nervous, but if you just look at shots as a whole without pixel peeping, it works!

#Photography #Photojournalism

Zoomed in detail of my portrait of Simon Cheng speaking at a rally outside the Chinese Embassy in London, showing chromatic aberration and slightly nervous bokeh at f/1.8 with the Sony 50mm f/1.8.

Sport is able to arouse the most diverse emotions in us and sporting events are often intensively accompanied by photographers (with very good equipment). These are ideal conditions for outstanding photography.

See the winners of the 2023 World Sports Photography Awards:

Screenshot of the award website with six images. Just two of the pictures: A female high diver in a somersault distributes small drops of water in a spiral. A female sprinter sits smiling on the tartan track next to a shaggy yellow mascot holding a sign that reads: World records are my favorite food

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 81.

Despite being ten years old, Fred Ritchin's Bending the Frame: Photojournalism, Documentary & the Citizen (2013) remains remarkably timely on the problems around #photojournalism, its reception, use & misuse. Grounded in a wide range of examples Ritchen explores how #socialmedia has transformed the #politics of #photography while setting out examples of various strategies to enhance the positive political influence of visual imagery.

Until 1962, the New York Museum of Modern Art had never exhibited a solo collection of colour photography. It took a photographer of Haas's talent to open the door for future colour photographers to be taken seriously.

I also love how he achieved this through #PhotoJournalism, blurring (appropriately) the distinction between art and documentary.

And he created these images as an immigrant, who had endured a Nazi labour camp. It is NYC through the eyes of a disoriented outsider.

An image from Enst Haas's 'New York in Color' series. Yellow New York taxis, various other vehicles and a mass of smartly-dressed pedestrians blur into indistinct shapes like the brushstrokes of an abstract expressionist painting.

Couldn't decide which photo I preferred so I posted a few.

“I waited at the counter of a white restaurant for eleven years. When they finally integrated, they didn’t have what I wanted."

“If they took all the drugs, nicotine, alcohol, and caffeine off the market for six days, they’d have to bring out the tanks to control you.”

A favourite frame from yesterday's momentous strike protests in London. A young boy caught in the midst of the chaos, his gaze levelled at the camera. His mum and dad were both striking teachers. The placard in his hands reads: "Our mum and dad are striking to protect our future!" 📸©

💀 Whenever Carnival rolls in, I’m back on the island, with the kids, having fun.

Also, not a huge fan of this particular holiday.

I spent two months in Liberia during the #Ebola outbreak back in 2014. This photograph shows a burial team disinfecting themselves after retrieving a highly infectious corpse from a shack in a remote village. In fear of stigamtazation they preferred to work at nights. #PhotoMonday #Photography #Photojournalism

🇵🇹 Not sure if this will turn into a series of portrait photos, but this one also fits the bill.

🇵🇹 Going through the archive again, landed on a photo taken during a boar hunting trip. I was working, hunting is really not my thing. Or guns. Still, like the portrait.
