Just used Helvum from Flathub to watch a show on my laptop through my wife’s and my Bluetooth buds simultaneously, and it worked flawlessly! Someone should make a GNOME extension for choosing multiple outputs, or something.

https://flathub.org/apps/org.pipewire.Helvum

As nice as it was to be able to do what I wanted, it was definitely intimidating at a glance. But it was as simple as connecting both headphones over Bluetooth, then dragging the app to the headphones in Helvum.

Still fighting with audio issues on #Debian Bookworm / #Linux and my #Bluetooth headset. Managed to get the device to connect via blueman-manager in the blueman package, but no audio is being sent.

I think I may try swapping #Pipewire back to #PulseAudio to see if that works better if this round of updates don't fix the issue.

1/2 With #bitwig as an alternative to fantastic #opensource apps like #ardour or #zrythm and popular technologies such as #pipewire and #wayland, #linux is already an attractive option for computer-based #musicproduction. This is also recognised by many #plugin #vendors, as you can see from the impressive collection listed at https://linuxdaw.org.

If you use multiple devices on #Linux devices with #Pipewire, you may want to share a single audio output (e.g. #Bluetooth headphones) between them. I think PW has some built-in options for that, but what I use is ROC (not the country!).

https://docs.pipewire.org/page_module_roc_source.html (and corresponding sink)

Plug it in, add some minimal config (sender needs the recipient IP address, so you probably want to set up a DHCP lease if you haven't), and it just works.

Of course there's latency, and with wifi *plus* bluetooth it does get noticeable as lip desync in videos, but otherwise it works great.

On Arch, I've been building `pipewire-full-roc-git` (and the rest) from AUR to get it, but looks like that's no longer needed: https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/pipewire-roc/ – perhaps that means it's now readily available in other distros too.

You should also make sure you have realtime-privileges installed and enabled for your user.

If latency/reliability still sucks after that, you might want to try linux-zen. And if using a bluetooth headset, try different codecs.

Note: it doesn't look like there's any encryption involved, so it's very likely snooping your audio will be trivial. So, like, don't use on a coffee shop wifi, I guess.

Mastodon Linux users, I need your help!!

I've been looking around for a new #Linux #distro to #distrohop (even though I swore to never distrohop again :P), but I can't find one that fits my needs:

- Built on #Debian Linux latest
- Supports more #apt providers
- Does not use #systemd, #pulseaudio & #x11
- Does use #PipeWire and #Wayland
- Has a big userbase and is maintained by a group of people, not an individual

I'd go for MX, but it breaks #3

I'm ok with X11 but I'd like it toggleable

From your perspective, based on whatever your various feedback mechanisms are, has F38 been a "successful" rollout?

- my F38 Cinnamon, KDE & KInoite VMs remain happy little campers.

Pretty cool milestone for cameras on the #PinePhonePro and the #libcamera + #PipeWire stack today: the #Manjaro images (the stock distro) for both #phosh and #PlasmaMobile now come with all required packages by default.

Finally I can simply install cheese and get an image.

Yes, the rotation is still wrong. Yes, there are still features missing that you'd expect from a modern camera stack. Yes, there are still bugs and suboptimal image quality. But we got a working base now.

We recently discovered that the #libcamera + #pipewire stack was actually broken on most distros for devices requiring an IPA - such as the #PinePhonePro and other mobile phones - when using distro-packages and not building either of the two projects from source.

#ArchLinux / #Manjaro and #Alpine / #postmarketOS have updates for that in the pipe now.

#debian got that fix a bit earlier already, #Fedora will likely follow soon.

tl;dr: the modern linux camera stack is slowly falling into place.

The more I play with #PipeWire (same goes for Pulse, oc) the more I'm amazed.

I stem back from the days when systems had trouble to open an audio sink twice because that was exclusive access on the hardware.

Nowadays? Hey Linux, I can haz analog-stereo and HDMI output at the same time?

Sure thing mate, here you go: pactl load-module module-combine-sink slaves="output-A,output-B" object.linger=0 node.nick="Combined-HDMI-ANALOG"

See `pactl list short sinks` for outputs list.

My experience with #pipewire so far has been quite bad: I'm using it in 3 computers, one with Ubuntu 22.10 and two with Arch, and every time I have to update my systems I fear audio will break in some way or another, because it happens almost monthly.

This really sucks but I'm too old and tired to try to understand wtf is wrong with yet another piece of audio software; I've already spent too much time with OSS, ALSA, PulseAudio, JACK 1&2, and what not for the last two and a half decades :/

Insight of the day: xdg-desktop-portal dialogs - at least on #gnome - require an app window to be open and focussed. So apps like #Cheese or Camera that currently initialize their camera backends before opening the window will need to delay that step, making camera portal implementation a bit more tedious.

This does not apply when launching the app from a command line, though, as access will get granted without a dialog in that case.

I am legitimately choosing between #ubuntu and #fedora for my next daily driver. I have really enjoyed using #zorinos, but want the modern #gnome 43 workflow, #pipewire and #wayland.

P.S. I know there are a ton of excellent distros out there. I have used many of them. These are my front runners. #pop_os and #zorinos have been disqualified due to their Gnome version.

Which do you recommend?

For any #wayland users out there stuggling with #screensharing over #WebRTC services and #pipewire (e.g. https://meet.jit.si and others)...

Firefox will crash until this bug is squished:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1790496

However, in #chromium (and presumably #chrome too if you like giving data to google), you can set this flag:
chrome://flags/#enable-webrtc-pipewire-capture

And then it works! Without that flag, Chromium works but only allows sharing a limited choice of windows.

Oh dear, it looks like my #NixOS upgrade has one fatal flaw: opening Discord completely breaks my #Pipewire virtual audio devices for the rest of the session. I have to log out and back in to have them work again...

I'd try moving to #Wireplumber, but I don't want to do a bunch of work desperately debugging Lua scripts when they plan to switch to declarative JSON anyway. Guess I'm just out of luck at the moment.

@WinstonSmith @shawnhooper @wisearts my main complain on music players on Linux is how they initialize sound. For #pipewire I would benefit if they do like games, regular pulseaudio initialized at the beginning that doesn't change even when stopped.

Most players change my system volume when I try to lower volume, and they also reconnect to pipe wire every track.

Dreading the conversion of my #Pipewire media-session configs to #wireplumber once #NixOS 21.11 is fully released 😢

I've had some custom nodes wired up so I could manage #Discord audio specially and pass desktop audio through a second account. I'll have to play with wireplumber next month, there might be a better way to do it using the #Lua configs but I'm concerned about my ability to debug it 😅

#Linux #LinuxTablet #LinuxAudio

When combining the various 3rd party repositories with the default #Fedora repository, most of the software I need is there. I have to do a bit of searching, since the #COPR doesn’t have a great way to search its various repositories, but I’m getting the process figured out. Also, #Pipewire is working very well! Fedora has the newest tech and has new software, yet doesn’t require daily maintenance. It strikes the best balance possible for me.

Ercanbrack

#linuxtablet #linuxaudio So to sum everything up thus far, #pipewire replaces #jack, and #nsm manages the applications in the pro audio session. #Agordejo is the recommended GUI interface for NSM. There seems to be several JACK graph based patch panel apps that can be used to make the actual jack connections between the audio apps, prior to saving the whole session with Agordejo. I’m not clear yet on which is the recommended or the best of the lot.

Ercanbrack

#linuxtablet #linuxaudio The #pipewire documentation seems to indicate that the pro audio concept of inter-app audio #sessionmanagement is outside of the scope of the project, and recommends #nsm, the New Session Manager (that currently stands as the reigning JACK session manager) as the session manager for pro audio in the post-JACK server world. As far as pipewire is concerned, all jack apps should work, but my interest is with understanding and supporting the new technology and standards.

Ercanbrack

#linuxtablet #linuxaudio One thing I learned is that pipewire’s concept of what a session is and does is different from JACK’s concept. #wireplumber, the current #pipewire session manager does not include the ability to save and restore audio applications (along with their jack connections. This is the whole point of #jack session management—to easily come back to a project later and not have to hook everything up again before starting to work on a project.

#linuxtablet #linuxaudio So, I am back on #endeavouros, and the install went flawlessly. Everything is identified and working, and my journal log is clear of errors. I also found a simple way to turn off the undesired #grub theming. #pipewire is installed and working correctly, and I have #Reaper and #surge installed and working. Since I use #alsa for reaper and it hosts my plugins, everything was simply plug-n-play. Both programs scale for #hidpi and I’ll soon test #touch screen capability. 😎👍🏼
