I really wish my #Pixel camera had more fun features, like the iPhone's photographic styles or OnePlus' collab with Hasselblad. It's just kinda boring without them.
We'll see if Google doesn't backtrack from this a few years in after they are bored or find it too difficult to stand by their commitments.

Jedes Jahr wenn ein neues #iPhone herausgebracht wird, steckt mich der Hype ein bisschen an und ich hätte so gerne Eines. Dann komme ich zum Glück wieder zur Vernunft und Frage mich: für was denn? Ich würde nicht mal 1/5 der gebotenen Funktionen nutzen! Wenn ich nicht so ein Fotofreak wäre könnte ich auch jahrelang mit einem Einsteiger-Smartphone glücklich sein. Streng genommen bräuchte ich nur einen gescheiten mp3-Player mit Messenger.
Insofern bin ich sehr gespannt, wie lange mich das #Pixel 6 Pro begleiten wird - denn Sicherheitsupdates gibt es noch bis Oktober 2026. Muss dazu sagen, früher war es ganz schlimm, da habe ich mein ganzes Geld für Handys ausgegeben, fast alle 8-10 Monate ein Neues. Also sind die bisher 2 Jahre Pixel 6 Pro und davor 2+ Jahre Pixel 3a für mich schon ein riesen Erfolg. Und mit dem 6 Pro will ich das mindestens verdoppeln, schließlich spricht absolut nichts mehr dagegen, v.a. dank GrapheneOS, mit dem ich mich extrem wohl fühle, den ziemlich guten Kameras und eben den langen Sicherheitsupdates.

So I went to a couple of car meets today and did an A/B/C #shootout on an #iPhone14Pro and #GooglePixel7. All images appear in this sequence:
1. #Halide app on #iPhone 14 Pro, RAW with as many post-processing options turned off as possible
2 iPhone 14 Pro camera app, #ProRAW
3. #Google #Pixel 7, RAW
The photos are mostly images of cars, not people.
All images are shot with the default 1x lens.
All images are imported as .dng into Lightroom and left as-is *except* for Halide shots which are all inexplicably overexposed by around 1.5 stops. For those shots, I manually lowered exposure, but left all other sliders where they were.
Halide produces 12 MP images even when I choose 48 MP. iPhone camera produces 48 MP images. Pixel 7 produces 12 MP images. It’s pretty obvious that the “48 MP” and “50 MP” images are synthesized out of binned-pixel 12 MP sensors. The images uploaded here are downscaled to 1080p jpgs using the same Lightroom settings (sRGB, 95% quality).

Have been playing with #Droidian this evening on an old Google #Pixel 3aXL. Overall very impressive. Initially I tried #UbuntuTouch but found it too locked down for my particular use case.
There are still a number of wee bugs with the OS, but overall it is very impressive - and far better than Ubuntu Touch.

Very strange...
My #DeGoogled #Pixel 7, which has such heroic battery life, went from 61% battery to 45% battery overnight, even though it was on battery saver mode.
Usually pixels will only drop a handful of percentage points overnight while on battery saver.
My phone regularly gives me two days of battery life, unlike my old Pixel 4a 5G, which was usually down to 20% by the end of the day.
#PSA: Don't let your phone's battery get below 20% if you want to daily-drive it for a long time.

Dang, I was really hoping Pixel 8 would support the magnet array for Qi2, but apparently it won’t. 😭
MagSafe is neat and you can get mostly there with cases on other phones, but also I don’t use a case with my phone.

When I upgraded from a Pixel 7 Pro to a Pixel Fold, Google was offering a free Pixel Watch with every Pixel Fold preorder. Since I already had one, I offered it up to my buddy Matt and he posted about it. Google saw it and did something cool and sent us both free new Pixel Watch bands! These look dope!

So today when I get home, I'm gonna try resetting my Samsung phone, and seeing if that fixes the Google Assistant issue. Better than spending another $500 or so on another phone right now. Y'all why do I do this to myself. iOS works okay, and yet, here I am even messing with Android. Like maybe I'm a masochist or something? Same thing with Mac and Linux, although with WSL and Homebrew I don't feel the call of the foss as much anymore. Gosh I wish I could be one of the normal blind people that are just happy with their iPhones and don't even think a thought about Android. Sometimes.

This binary transparency log has been collecting all publicly released factory images for Pixel 6 and newer devices. If an images is included in the log, it is publicly known to exist. If it is not included, then it might be a targeted attack. So even when signing keys leak or are used through potential insider attacks, an attacker is left with only two choices: make public that a (potentially malicious) image was signed with the misused key and expose it to analysis, or not push it to the log and therefore make it detectable as not officially published.
I have been running a #TransparencyLog #Witness for multiple logs. including the Pixel log, for a while at our Institute of Networks and Security at #JKU (Johannes Kepler University) Linz, feeding into 2 different redistributors for these co-signatures: https://github.com/mhutchinson/mhutchinson-distributor/tree/main/distributor/logs and https://github.com/WolseyBankWitness/rediffusion/tree/main/logs. Running a witness is low effort, takes minimal resources, and strengthens the security of transparency logs. My first Pixel Fold had a camera issue after 3 days. The issue was that the main camera just stopped existing or was busy. Kind of both. It could not be used.
I chatted with Google and they sent me a new phone. This one has a camera that is there, but it also has that shakes.

It does not shake all the time, but a lot of the time. It is a shame. There is a lot of good things to be said about this phone, but there are clearly some issues.

Still no luck reaching any media contact at #Google -- even contacts who have been helpful in the past -- to get answers to the many queries I'm receiving about the #Pixel Fold. Maybe they've all been laid off.
This means I'm probably going to have to say in my venues (including my network radio segments) that I can't recommend the device simply because Google won't provide answers to basic questions.
Man, that's sad.
