For anyone using #Apache2 and #Pleroma:
For the first stepjust make a copy of your /etc/apache2/sites-available/pleroma-apache.conf to /etc/apache2/sites-available/pleroma-apache.conf
Then register/create your cache.example.com Subdomain and replace your main.example.com with that.
Now you get your new SSL-cert e.g. with certbot –apache (You may have to comment out your <VirtualHost *:443>-section for that.
Insert the Domain as descriped in @lain ‘s post and do the last step.
The last step in your pleroma-apache.conf has to look like this: ReqriteEngine On
RedirectMatch “^/(media|proxy)*” https://cache.example.com/$1
Don’t forget to Reload/Restart Apache2 and test if everything is pointing the way it should.
Please update your sites!

Another important pleroma security post: @alex and @graf found ANOTHER injection bug, and this one was probably used for the attack. I think that single user instances are probably not affected, but I wouldn't want to risk it. Move your media and proxy to a subdomain as alex initially recommended, it's not complicated and takes 15 minutes, and eliminates this whole class of bugs.
Fix is being worked on, but just do the media/proxy thing now so you'll never have to worry about this again.

Easily one of the stupidest #Fediverse posts I’ve ever seen
The TL;DR is–and I’m not making this up–“block all #Pleroma instances because people can follow you without your permission”
RT: https://libranet.de/objects/0b6b25a8-1463-b1da-8569-36e534882357
@peter_weyand lol what the heck is this? Poor takes all around smh
Pleroma has a wonderful looking user interface
Nah, #PleromaFE absolutely sucks, #Soapbox is better
Unfortunately it allows friend requests and follows from one person to another without the other person’s consent.
Are you new to social media? This is a known feature, not a bug. If you don’t want anyone to follow you, the proper recourse would be to lock your account by forcing people to send follow requests that then must be approved by you in order for them to be able to follow you. This is not difficult to do in either #Soapbox, #Mastodon, or #Pleroma; I have done it in all of them.
@thebeeguy I really recommend to use #calckey or #pleroma because #mastodon isn't good for long texts.
And the admin of your instance might be thankful if you don't upload videos, if it could have been an image.
Thanks for the informative posts :)
@atomicpoet@calckey.social I concur. What people do not realize about InstaPost (what I call Instagram’s Barcelona / P92 project) is that it will not merely be available upon different domains, but also upon different servers. Fediblock will be useless or irrelevant at stopping it.
It would be like trying to block anyone using Soapbox or Pleroma.
One-click InstaPost installs will probably become the norm across numerous hosts worldwide, & it could easily reach hundreds of millions of users in a few years, if not a billion.
A better alternative is to encourage hosting companies to offer one-click installs (with auto updates enabled) of various platforms like Misskey, Mastodon, Pleroma, WriteFreely, Pixelfed, BookWyrm, Calckey (who is thankfully changing their name), etcetera.
InstaPost’s greatest strength is also it’s greatest weakness: the requirement of an Instagram login to access it’s power. You can interact with users on InstaPost & show them the benefits of using a Fediverse project that does not depend upon the login approval of Zuck.
This will appeal to people, especially if their access is blocked by Instagram.
I plan on interacting with people on InstaPost from various platforms in order to demonstrate the power & diversity of the Fediverse. I hope many others do the same.

@teufel100
Jaaa...
https://social.tchncs.de/@kuketzblog/110428640620752872

You have to keep a few things in mind.
First of all, the Fediverse is not only #Mastodon. Nor is the Fediverse only about a dozen big projects. The Fediverse is dozens upon dozens of big and small projects.
For the whole Fediverse to fediblock Meta, every single last one of them, even just recently launched private proof-of-concept alphas of brand-new projects which nonetheless will federate, will require not only a mandatory instance-wide blocking mechanism, but a mandatory standard blacklist with Meta's instance on it. Otherwise developers can't test-drive their new Fediverse server application without their test instance being defederated left and right for not blocking Meta.
Of course, this would also mean that everything that even only as much as understands #ActivityPub would require such a mandatory default blacklist with Meta on it. Even if it isn't based on ActivityPub. Even if ActivityPub is an add-on, a plug-in, maybe even third-party like in the case of #WordPress. Even if ActivityPub has to be manually activated instance-wide by the admin and then separately by the users for each one of their channels like in Hubzilla's case.
That is, putting Meta on the same list as all other defederated instances would probably be considered not enough. Blocking Meta would have to be hard-coded into the engine of the project itself, also to mandatorily roll it out to all instances of all projects. Instance block lists aren't part of the source code, and if they became that, lots of not-so-techy instance admins would end up with file conflicts they can't solve because the
git pull
involved in the upgrade would try to create a file that already exists.Still, this wouldn't be 100% water-tight. An absolutely mandatory fediblock for Meta would mean certain death for lots and lots of small private instances. Admins of such tiny instances often only do the very bare necessities to keep them running. Sometimes they rarely or never even upgrade the underlying operating system, much less the Fediverse project running on it. Why should they? It runs. And an upgrade means a) a hassle and b) probably more of a hassle if stuff breaks.
Just to prove my point: There are still Mastodon 3.x instances in the Fediverse. There are still a very few running small instances of #Osada and #Zap, both of which have been discontinued on New Year's Eve 2022. These projects are no longer maintained. They won't get any updates anymore. They were superseded by #Streams, and not everyone who still runs these old projects wants to do the switch.
And then there are those projects that are technically still in development, but whose development has slowed down dramatically. Look at how often #Pleroma rolls out new versions. And Pleroma isn't exactly obscure, it has public instances. Or look at #Plume which counts as still actively developed, but whose devs barely find any time to do anything, so it often doesn't get any updates in many months. I don't even think that Plume has any means of blocking instances by blacklist.
So if blocking Meta becomes mandatory, you can fediblock an entire long-form blogging project out of the Fediverse with all its private and public instances because not a single instance will participate in blocking Meta, because not a single instance is even capable of doing that, because the capability is not included and rolled out in time, because the devs can't find the time to include it.

#Fediverse
I was thinking that if we as fediverse should start re-thinking the concept of "embedding media" to a next level to extend privacy by design. And default.
Current situation is, when you share a e.g. youtube url most projects embedding in a classical way by default. Without you doing something, just scrolling over that post, there is data loaded from external sites by default. Ok on some apps and sites there is a banner where you have click on "Do you agree to load external data .. privacy ... blah". But if the author of the post or article doesn't tell you exactly what it is, you don't have a chance to know what you are clicking on. And let's be honest: There are a lot people out there just throwing in links without ANY information trusting the site to catch all the information and don't care about the privacy of other people.
How about we start to think that by default there is only e.g. a classic thumbnail with an included url, that was caught when the person posted it? This wouldn't load any other data. A static post.
So you could see already more information like a preview, what is in a lot situations another important decision if you click on it or not.
So you could click on it an the media opens in your preferred App oder Programm.
Additionally there could be another Button, who lets you load the embedded version, so you don't have to leave your app or Website.
Ho do you think about improving the privacy with embedded media?

Yeah, I need to stop fiddling with these now, so I'd better just release them.
Meet "Freestyle" (light-ish) and "Illusionary Epidemic" (dark-ish).
As per always you probably need to "Save file as..." on the .json files to actually save them. Don't forget to grab the background images too.
And just to be totally clear: anyone with Akkoma/Pleroma should be able to apply these themes to their personal profile, regardless of what your instance runs as an instance theme. Feel free to use as you like.
Enjoy.

@kennypeanuts@fosstodon.org It depends on the instance. I believe #Pleroma instances show the local timeline by default, but admins can turn it off. mastodon.social shows the local timeline too, so I'd assume this is something #Mastodon has an option for, but I'm not sure if it's the default. You can always try appending /explore
to the URL if it's a Mastodon instance to see if they allow it.

hi fedi!
I've been idly thinking about trying a different fediverse microblogger, a la #pleroma, #akkoma, #misskey, even a mastodon fork like #glitchsoc, i kinda just wanna see what it's like not in mastodonland. I'd really like to hear what experiences you've had on any given client and instance, recommendations are more than welcome!!
bonus points if there's a good android app for whatever it is, i use megalodon right now and would really like to still have an app

I don't want to alarm you, but here on a bone-stock #Hubzilla 8.4 Web interface, I can gleefully circumvent any and all privacy safeguards any #Mastodon fork or any mobile app connected to any Mastodon instance could possibly present to me with absolutely no obstacles. And I have countless ways of quoting. I could #quote anyone.
That's because Hubzilla is neither a Mastodon fork nor an alternate Mastodon interface nor a Mastodon client app. It's a wholly separate project that's almost four years older than Mastodon, based on the #Zot protocol that's five years older than Mastodon and seven years older than #ActivityPub. It federates to Mastodon and everything else based on ActivityPub through an optional built-in connector, but internally, it speaks a language more powerful than ActivityPub.
By the way, the same goes for #Friendica, another separate project that's the direct predecessor of Hubzilla, based on the #DFRN protocol and six years older than Mastodon, as well as #Streams, another separate project that was launched last year as an "indirect" fork of a fork... of Hubzilla, based on the latest incarnation of Zot, now named #Nomad. Unlike Hubzilla, both have ActivityPub on by default.
Now I'm curious whether your privacy safeguards have any effect on other #Fediverse projects based on ActivityPub such as #Mitra, #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #MissKey, #CalcKey or #FoundKey.

Is it better to have a separate #fediverse account for every bubble you are in and every language you speak or is it better to use just one account and mix everything?
Or can it even be confusing for people if you post about too nerdy stuff or even in another language?
#mastodon #calckey #pleroma #pixelfed #management #socialmedia
Back in January I built a #Mastodon client; https://schizo.social
It's not very good, but you can login and view your timelines.
I sort of lost interest, but now that I have a #calckey #pixelfed and #pleroma accounts I'm thinking about adding multi-account support so I can check all my accounts in one place.
I know some apps allow you to switch between multiple accounts, but I haven't seen one that lets you see them all in one feed.
Mainly; I'm a little frustrated with muted words, and how every #ActivityPub implementation does them differently. I have ideas about how I'd like for them to work and SS could be a good place to experiment with that.
So I tried logging in with my Calckey account; the #Oauth page comes up and redirects back to my app, but there must be some difference in the response because the authentication doesn't succeed.
I'm worried there's gonna be lots of little differences between implementations like that, and that I'm signing myself up for a world of pain by trying to support all of them.
Anyhow, it'll be an ActivityPub learning experience!
If this sounds interesting to you, tell me what you want to see in a #Fediverse client!
Big news regarding #SpaceHost!
We've passed alpha and are now moving towards closed beta! In fact, we'll be demoing the platform to a potential customer next week -- and I'm excited!
For those unaware, #SpaceHost is the fully managed Fediverse hosting service that @reiver@mastodon.social and I are running.
Right out of the gate, we'll be hosting a wide array of Fediverse services including #Mastodon, #Pixelfed, #Calckey, #Pleroma -- and others!
I know that so many people have been waiting for this moment. I'm so happy that #SpaceHost is now in closed beta!
If you want to apply for closed beta access, here's where to sign-up:
https://spacehost.one
Is there a #pleroma instance that's free to join without an account review? Or maybe if a #PleromaAdmin can help me set up a test account on their instance?

@abhijith@social.cowcornerfeeds.co.in @supernovae@universeodon.com Just going by what I observe as someone who runs both a #Calckey server and a #Pleroma server: I like Calckey’s search more.
I agree with @jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net about how DMs shouldn't be sent unless a relationship of trust (perhaps by mutual follows) gets established first.
However, maybe it's time to retire DMs -- at least as implemented on Mastodon.
Even with recent UI changes, they're easy to confuse for regular messages -- making it all too easy to make a faux pas with visibility settings.
Now some server software (like #Calckey and #Pleroma) have a chat system with a UI that makes it clear that the discussion is not to be confused with status updates. Moreover, these are not Mastodon-style DMs either, but something separate.
I personally prefer chat over DMs. And while I think there's lots of room to improve them, chats are an upgraded user experience over DMs.
Based on a discussion that I've had with @Gargron@mastodon.social, I don't think he likes DMs either. I remember him talking about building a separate chat system. That's probably not a bad idea.

Some thoughts about #fullsearch of federated-with instances. 🧵 1/2
1. Conflating any ill will you have with Supernovae at #Universeodon, with the issue of search indexing on the Fediverse to justify your fediblock won't help resolve the issues around search.
2. It isn't global search. While we shout, lock down, and don't participate in building the additions to our protocols that the #Fediverse needs, we've been letting #Google index the Fediverse. It's already searchable and Google's new Perspectives tab is going to make it even easier. Maybe we could fight that rather than keep thinking it doesn't exist and continuing to write ineffective Facebook-viral style "I do not give permission..." copypasta?
3. The #Fediverse does not respect your do-not-index-my-posts flag. It never has. It can't. It's not supported by the #Mastodon API, as @supakaity@blahaj.zone explains, and nor is it supported at #ActivityPub level and will need to be added into a new AP protocol.
Every instance server from the #Misskey (#Calckey, #Foundkey), #Pleroma (#Akkoma), and #Friendica (#Hubzilla, #Streams) lineages has full search of federated-with instances as default. All these services actually pre-date the creation of Mastodon in 2016 you can read @Polychrome@poly.cyber.city 's post for their commentary on such. Fediblock all of them to create your very own #Mastoverse or you could become part of building a better, safer, Fediverse? Perhaps through participating in the Fediverse Enhancement Proposals? #FEP
#FediblockMeta #meta #FediblockDiscussion #nosearch #fullTextSearch #FediverseSafety
@atomicpoet I agree! Ironically, it seems as if each #Fediverse platform has its own distinct culture.
#Mastodon is mostly serious conversations.
#Misskey is about celebrating life, mostly in Japanese.
#Calckey is about celebrating life, mostly in English.
#Pleroma has lots of sarcasm, but lots of trash talking.
#Pixelfed is about capturing the beauty in everyday life.
#WriteFreely is about undistracted, lengthy thoughts (mostly technical).
Just my general observations.
I've been messing around with #Akkoma, #Pleroma and #Kitsune installs on a 32-bit #RaspberryPi, and it has been very rocky. Now that I'm turning to an x86_64 VPS, I'm wondering if I should just try #Mastodon

I've been experimenting with Soapbox platform (based on Pleroma) for fediverse. I have my own server using a hosted service.
On a small server, hashtags seem to be pretty useless. I hoped to create a niche account, but without the ability to search for posts or follow a hashtag it's not useful.
I could get on a much larger server or simply use a different tool.
If anyone is interested, I commented on this Soapbox issue.

How many accounts do you have across the #Fediverse in total? This includes Mastodon, Calckey, PixelFed, Akkoma, Friendica, Pleroma and any other platforms that are part of the Fediverse.
Please BOOST for maximum exposure to the #Fediverse
Please also note, poll choices are limited to only 4 options which is why the options are listed as they are. Feel free to comment to explain your choice.

I don't know if I'll ever complete and publish these tables, but it won't be anytime soon because it'll be a whole lot of features in these tables. Also, I'll very likely need help from users of other projects to complete the tables.
I frequently see posts where instance admins are bemoaning Mastodon's lack of a given feature. Many times these are features that other Fedi microblogging systems like Akkoma/Pleroma already implement well.
So why aren't those as popular? Why are folks sticking with Mastodon?
@mho One can also give #Whalebird from @h3poteto a try.
#Mastodon #Pleroma #DesktopClient
Remember folks, if #Mastodon isn't for you, there are many other corners of the #fediverse.
#Pleroma #Akkoma #Misskey and #CalcKey: (mostly) compatible with Mastodon apps, admins can run various different front ends, support editing posts and quote posting.
Let me know if you're interested in any of these other platforms and I'll be happy to help.

@paul Would @tapbots consider building similar #Fediverse apps for #Misskey (as well as it's variants like #Calckey), #Pixelfed & #Peertube‽
I believe @ivory is compatible with #Pleroma & #Akkroma (maybe Pixelfed too).
Misskey already has a great app called #MissRiricia (by @fruitriin), but it's honestly the only phenomenal Misskey app available.
#Mastodon boasts numerous great apps (yours included), & I am hoping more developers create apps across multiple platforms.
I've said this before and will say it again. #Mastodon will be the gateway software that shows that #ActivityPub works at scale and gets people using the protocol in a familiar way.
In 2+ years I can see other AP software like #Pixelfed #Calckey #Friendica #Pleroma or something else becoming on par with the number of installation/users as Mastodon has now.
As more people use the protocol and devs build upon it, the possibilities are endless.
We shouldn't be putting all our eggs in one basket.

Until this is addressed, if you happen to be using any other server type (e.g. #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #Calckey, #Friendica etc), GitHub will not accept your handle as a fediverse social link.
