I'm reading Christopher Booker's The Seven Basic Plots, and he's persuasive in a lot of ways, but I'm not sure I agree with all his points. Any #writers on here familiar with his work? This weekend, I added the ability to my drawing robot to understand gcode, the file format that is most commonly used for #CNC machines, #lasercutter and #3dprinting. Here is an image that was prepared for a laser cutter. Also it is the first #plot that did not use a thick Edding marker but a fineliner, and I must say I am impressed by the precision of my bot that currently has a drawing surface of 3.5m by 2m (and a max surface of 7m x 7m).

A #TTRPG plot idea I've had for a while, but never got time to explore it for use at the table - so, I bequeath it unto you, o Fediverse, to do with as you see fit.
Think Disney's Beauty & The Beast, but twist it (of course). Rather than the Beast being in charge, though, it's the accursed servants. They paid for their lord's hubris, and they're definitely not happy. They never let the lord out of their sight, make certain the lord does only what they deem "honorable," and make sure the lord is living in whatever they believe is hell.
Of course, they also know how the curse must be broken, so they plot various kidnappings of local serfs, and try to make the magic happen.
As time is against them, their kidnappings happen more frequently, and with less care.
So, how do the PCs figure in all this? That's for the players to discover?

The last time I walked to the local grocery store I bought 2 jars of pure-peanuts #peanutbutter. There was only one jar of the smooth; so I took that and a #crunchypeanutbutter. Next day I discovered the #evilplot. When I spread the #crunchy on my toast the thickness was that of the crunchy bits – 3x the amount I normally used! It’s clearly an #evilplot to sell more peanut butter! But I have foiled the #plot. I will only spread smooth on my toast. The crunchy in now only a snack (see photo).

Just killed off one of my favourite recurring characters yesterday, which came out of nowhere. Hadn't been planned at all, just happened just to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bit it was fitting, and opens up an unexpected arc for another character to grow into.

@cyberhuman Yep. Nothing can beat the layout of a real town when you are having your characters move through a city. It's better than randomization, because you end up with real obstacles and real placement of businesses and restaurants. It also gives you a paradigm for with the way buildings look for that specific climate. I love Google maps for this reason. I use the visualization feature all the time.

@allisonwyss This was a common refrain in every fiction class I took during my MFA. To an extent I have to agree that story comes from #character more than #plot - on the other hand, there are only so many interesting character moments that can happen in a story without a plot.
In other words, I'm FAR more interested in how a character grapples with lost fatherhood during a zombie apocalypse, than on Tuesday after work. I suppose that's why I #write #scifi rather than contemporary fiction.

The relation of plot & character has come up in my class.
I seem to care less about plot than character (& other more smooshy ideas). I might have drafts where I'm just draping my characters over an arbitrary plot structure--holding the story together so I can play with it. Sometimes this arbitrary plot becomes integral to the story over time, but sometimes it doesn't. Then I have to re-think things.
But I know a LOT of writers start with plot.

Guy Fawkes belonged to a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. A jealous wife in China chopped off her cheating husband’s penis as he slept, then snuck into his hospital room after he had it sewn back on — and hacked it off again and tossed it out the window.
Fan Lung, a dad of five, sealed his fate when he decided to use his wife’s cellphone to send his secret lover a hot and heavy email, Central European News reports.
The 32-year-old forgot to log out of his account after the message was sent, which is how his 21-year-old wife, Feng — who is now under arrest for grievous bodily harm — came across the saucy exchange and snapped.
The jilted wife went berserk, grabbed a pair of scissors, stormed into their bedroom and cut off his penis while he was sleeping.
Lung was rushed to the hospital, where doctors were able to save the appendage and sew it back on.
But Feng was able to sneak into the recovery room, where she chopped his penis off a second time and threw it out the window, according to CEN.
A shocked Lung chased his wife outside, despite losing a lot of blood.
“Staff rushed out to see what was happening and found the patient with blood streaming down his legs hitting the woman,” a hospital spokesman said. “He was stopped and the woman was taken in for treatment, and then we discovered she had chopped his penis off again.”
Despite desperate search efforts, authorities were unable to find Lung’s manhood. Police believe it may have been stumbled upon by a stray dog or cat, according to CEN.
Lung’s side chick — Zhang Hung, 21 — said she’s OK with her man not being able to have more children.
“It doesn’t matter that he’s lost his fertility,” she told CEN. “He has five children already."

I've devoted my holiday down time (#Spoonie writer) to watching this new-to-me channel, Mauler - Long Form Media Discussion.
If we want to learn how character drives plot, and how plot works, there's nothing simpler than understanding screenplay. Even if we never want to write one.
Yet a film can be popular even if it gets away with craft murder. Because of film's built-in emotional impact, and how it can use money to make things prettier. Like all those literary bestsellers in the mid-20th century, which people bought to put on display and never read.
But that Shock and Awe effect only lasts for a while. It's a bit of an unfair advantage, actually. As a novelist, I have to suggest a person is attractive physically and emotionally with subtle language choices and showing them in some sort of action. In film, I can pick an attractive actor.
Well, we both strive for excellence in our own ways, no? Which is why I'm learning so much about plotting from this channel, in a way that makes me laugh out loud quite a bit.

@thor I think it’s actually still the 1950s or ’60s and we’re all just characters in a #scifi story.
I would advise you to enjoy the ride, if this all weren’t so badly written. Very implausible #plot and don’t get me started on the #characters.
