I've had an idea for a new #fantasy #novel that I have been playing around with for a few days, but today I am hoping it's crossed over from idea into being a new #wip . It's story about #witchtrials, #rebellion, #patriarchy , #magic , #love and #sisterhood in a world of #Smugglers, #pirates , #alchemists, #monsters, #witches , #religion , #dragons and #war.

OK, I'm gonna bite the bullet and ask a question that's been on my mind for a while. What better day to do it, given that #today is International Transgender Day of Visibility?

In the work I've just completed #plotting, I have the chance to make one of the characters transgender. But as a person of empathy (I hope), I'd want to do it in a real way. Not a tick in the box. Not a jump on a bandwagon. But a sympathetic, hopefully dramatic and moving, representation of what is still a largely unrepresented section of society.

I realise it might be hopelessly unrealistic for a cis, white, hetero, and above all old man to do the character justice, but that's why I'm asking.

Good idea? Bad idea? Pitfalls and gotchas? All responses and reactions gratefully received.

Those stats I promised you yesterday. Well it turns out there wasn't as much scene overlap/duplication as I thought. Maybe I'm getting better at this, or maybe it's just the way it played out this time round. I know which one my money's on lol.

Anyway, after timelining, the scene count has dropped from 199 to 176. This gives book 2 25% more scenes than book 1, suggesting it will draft up to around 145,000 words. Good stuff!! I'll be starting on that as soon as I've tidied up the previous WIP ready for release. So for now at least, plotting is done.

Finished the plotting #today. Yayy! Final stage involves adding all those scenes into Aeon Timeline and shuffling them around until they obey the laws of physics (insofar as they need to in this fantasy world), agglomerating overlaps, and filling in any narrative holes that are revealed by this high-level view. Stats tomorrow, as I'm not at my desk and forgot to make notes 🙄

My compulsive side was gratified to complete this phase on a Sunday, meaning I can set this book aside and start the new week with the post-beta phase of 2nd trilogy book 1. A few heavyweight comments to deal with, plus formatting for publication, leaving space for the new map. I'll chase the cartographer tomorrow too, as it's been a while since I heard from her.

Not such good news on the house move front. We learned on Friday that when our vendor said the builder of his new house "wasn't releasing it to him," he had a very good reason for that. It's not built yet. In fact it's only reached foundation level. So we're looking at a minimum six month delay. Disappointing. We've started to look for somewhere else, but the pressure is on now, since we also sold our place on Friday. Seriously, if you're buying and selling houses, the last place you want to do it is the UK. The way we do it here is crazy.

I always say I don't like* the #plotting bit, but you know even though it seems to drag on forever, sometimes there's magic in there somewhere. Like #today when I unearthed a connection that can really make this story pop. Something that grew from a seed I didn't know I'd dropped beside the path I walked with the first three books, and yet here it is, staring at me like a strange, alien sunflower. Impossible to ignore. Made my day.

*If I'm honest, it's not that I don't like it. More that it's hard work. Mentally hard. Focused brainwork, like trying to mould clay with your mind when you have no telekinetic ability to speak of. So it's hard work I don't like. Lazy fker.

#today we have three "viewings" booked for potential buyers to wander round and decide whether they want to make an offer on our home. We're escaping to the local makers' market, and thence to the nearest cafe for a coffee and the largest piece of comfort cake I can find.

But there's still time to make an hour or so's progress with the #plotting. Since my last report, I've divided the scenes up into "P" (plot) scenes for the story arc and "C" (character) scenes for the arcs of all the main characters. A total of 199 scenes. Today I've made a start adding them to Aeon Timeline which makes it easier to see where the overlaps are, and amalgamate the duplicates. This will give me an order, and a more accurate scene count. It's a long, tedious, and mindless task which -- fortunately -- lends itself perfectly to these short bursts of activity that are all I have time for while the house-move madness threatens to engulf me.

I just spent the whole morning tuning the plots in a manuscript. It really shouldn't be this hard.

I've gone dark on the subject of #plotting recently. You know how people say "blah blah blah and then life happened"? Yeah, that. It's thrown me a bit of a curveball this last week. So #today , and for the past several days, I've had to focus on setting up all the legals, trades, and other paraphernalia associated with moving house as we prepare to sell up and transplant ourselves 35 miles south, into the depths of leafy Cheshire.

Writing has suffered. As in, there hasn't been any. Hopefully when things get a little less crazy (after the marketing launch and before viewing starts), I'll be able to get back to a more normal routine.

OK, that didn't take anywhere near as long as I expected. Full-fat plot is complete, and #today is the point at which I diverge slightly from the regular Snowflake process.

I've broken down that plot narrative into scene beats. That's given me 47 "P-scenes". The detailed character arcs completed as part of Step 5 I've also broken down to give a total of 152 "C-scenes", distributed between the 13 POV characters.

Next stage is to add these to my Scrivener structure for this book, and fill in each scene entry with its location, entry point, exit point, major changes that the scene introduces, and any extra notes that will help once I start drafting. During this part of the work, I can clearly see where one or more C-scenes overlap with P-scenes and can be amalgamated -- provided it makes sense from a POV POV (IYSWIM) -- resulting eventually in a reduced overall scene count.

Documenting the process like this makes it sound uber-heavyweight, but by the time it's done the drafting goes really smoothly (trust me, lol), and the detailed timelining leaves very little room for plot holes or other gotchas, while still leaving freedom of movement for the characters to do their own thing while still walking in the right direction.

The last three character plots are in the bag, after a short but intense session that flowed really smoothly, especially with those two new peeps. Turns out they're both going to have an interesting time of it, in this book and the next -- lots of ideas bouncing around #today.

The next stage in the Snowflake process is Step 6, which expands the outline plot into the full-blown version to include all of the high-level logic, strategic direction, and mop up any new story ideas that have come out of the characters' stories but really belong in the main plot. This is supposed to be a week-long activity, but often takes me longer, so I might go dark for a while 😬

Back to it #today, and another three characters' stories plotted. One of those three is a lukewarm antagonist, who a beta-reader referred to recently as "a bit lame". I couldn't disagree. Armed with his gentle criticism and the chance to switch up his arc into something more satisfying, it occurred to me that he's a bit of a Grima Wormtongue character. Only - by the time we reach book #4 - he has neither a Saruman nor a Theoden to give him any purpose.

That turned out to be the insight I needed to plot out his forward path, introduced with a few breadcrumbs that I still have time to add to book #4, through book #5 and leading to a satisfying but unusual redemption in the final book.

All of that adds up to a feeling of achievement today. Only three characters remaining now, including those two new ones that I should get to tomorrow.

Three more characters' stories plotted #today. Seemed to flow a lot better than yesterday and despite repeating (ad nauseam, lol) that I can't do more than a couple of hours, today's stint was three.

It also dawned on me during the morning why it makes my brain ache. First time I've ever examined it consciously, possibly connected with this being the first time I've blogged about the process (so thanks for that, mastodon!), and also having read others' posts about their method... All those lucky pantsers for whom the story evolves as the characters interact, have a comfortable, gentle, sloping path into their stories.

Plotting it in advance looks more like a cliff face that needs scaling. It all has to be thought about and tied down at once. No wonder it feels like hard work.

Anyway, four characters left to do before I get to the two new ones, about whom I know very little. So at least that part of it will feel like a journey of discovery rather than a scary ascent.

A short plotting day #today (grocery shop first thing - no shortage of tomatoes though, I'm happy to report. It's the small things) but in any case I can't plot for much more than two hours at a stretch. It turns my head to mush.

Even so in those two hours I've polished the two "Step 5s" I had already started, and completed two more. Leaves me with eight still to do. Plus, all of that has thrown up some minor changes to the overall story, and added 4 things to the to-do list (because they need research, and that's a different brain).

Not bad. Time for a walk in the sunshine now, to resolidify the brain mush and work up an appetite!

It doesn't work for everyone, but it's a natural fit for me. Reopening Scrivener, I'm reminded that I've completed steps 1 through 4. That last step - the 1-page summary of the entire novel - needs adjusting to take account of the ideas I had for books #5 and #6 while on holiday. I may need to include some foreshadowing.

But for #today and the next few days it'll be all about Step 5 - the expansion of the 1-paragraph summaries of the stories for each character into a detailed beat sheet for their arcs during this book.

I'm going in!

As of today - Feb 21st - I've finally stopped avoiding this plotting. Since I'm still in the early stages I thought it might be worthwhile documenting the process, if only so you can point and laugh, or think "Oh Gawd! I couldn't possibly work that way!", or "Hmm... interesting. I wonder if that would work for me?", or anything in between.

I found interspersing the drafting of book #4 with the plotting of book #5 was a good way to keep both fresh (and minimise the pain of plotting), but I abandoned that approach late last year as the end of the draft was in sight and I wanted to get it done.

So here I am on notional Day 1, picking up the threads of that abandoned plot to see where I am and reset my head.

A full week after returning from our expedition to the North Cape, and I've run out of mundane displacement activities. But #today is Sunday: not a day for starting serious #plotting so instead I've been working on my cover. Found an awesome plug in for GIMP that lets me seamlessly extend my background graphic (that didn't have room at the bottom for author name but is otherwise perfect). Pleased with progress made, now I just need to create an ash cloud.

I've done a lot of #plotting today, and begun the final chapter of my #wip. The whole book is now just about 100,000 words, which I didn't really think I'd get to when it all started with a short story.
But there's a feeling I'm having in this final chapter that I've not really had with other stories I've written, and that's a deep sadness for my characters. It's been a very tough road for them.

Maybe not overrated, but not as difficult as actually telling the story. It's a bit like #plotting - you can have all the ideas you want, but then you have to string them together into something readable. That's where the skill lies.
#Worldbuilding helps with that - a believable world let's the reader be comfortable as they read a #fantasy story.

Yes!! Had one of those writing mornings: the main character's emotions feel authentic and the next action will be driven by these emotions, and her resolve to act. I've only published one novel but written so manuscripts and this is that bullseye feeling I live for: knowing my MC's character is driving the action, rather than me as the author dragging her along to get the story over with.
