Qi, and breathing more generally, are crucial concepts in #Chinese and #EastAsian #poetics over 2 millennia.
Books like this should be renamed "A Poetics of Breathing in 20th-century American, British, and German Literature."

A man who was photographed marching in the violent "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017 killed himself last week.

Teddy Joseph Von Nukem, 35, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on January 30, according to a report from the Texas County Coroner's Office in Missouri. That is the same day Von Nukem was scheduled to be in court in Arizona, facing four counts relating to illegal import and sale of fentanyl.

Von Nukem was seen in two famous photos of the alt-right rally, wearing a black shirt in a large group of men chanting and holding tiki torches. He confirmed his identity to the Springfield News-Leader newspaper a week after the rally after being identified online by a former classmate. He told the newspaper he did not consider himself a White supremacist or neo-Nazi, but would not "counter-signal against them."

"As poetry and other forms of writing developed as important means of expressing and regulating emotions, attention to subtle moods became a staple of poetic theory. Growing esteem for emotion is voiced in the first systematic work of literary theory, Liu Xie’s 劉勰 fifth-century Writing the Heart-mind, Carving the Dragon 文心雕龍: “People are endowed with seven emotions. Responding to things of the world these emotions are moved. So moved by things, they sing aspirations; none of this is unnatural.” Such positive views of emotions have remained an important stream of Chinese thought, and Liu’s text is just one in a tradition that viewed feelings as heavenly dispositions fundamental to inspiration, nurturing qi, and the balance of “wind and bone,” continuity and transformation, and the hidden and manifest. If literature was “written in the stars,” as Liu Xie claimed, it was because the heart-mind could be aligned with Heaven’s will.

"Yet early texts also express concerns about regulating resentment and other negative emotions. The Record of Ritual warns of becoming a slave to desires, and its most famous chapter, “The Great Learning,” presents anger, terror, worry, and other passions as obstacles to rectifying the mind in accordance with heavenly principles. By the Han dynasty, thinkers began to associate the goodness of original human nature with yang and the cloudy nature of the emotions with yin. . . . "
