- Ran the process dividing the country in 2 to 8 groups.

What do you think?

Note: I included the population of Highly Urbanized Cities and Component Cities in the population of the province/area that they are geographically located in (e.g. Basilan's population includes that of the city of Isabela).

- Made a population layer (based on 2020 Census) composed of provinces and NCR cities/municipality.

- Used QGIS' "Order by expression" algorithm to sort the layer features based on their centroid latitude (x(centroid($geometry)).

- Made a script that would divide the sorted features into groups whose population sum was approximately the same (or close to it).

According to a new study, population growth is not good for people or the planet. The researchers found that increasing population size leads to lower life satisfaction, higher environmental impact, and lower economic growth. They suggest that policies promoting smaller families and lower fertility rates could benefit human well-being and ecological sustainability.

Impacts of Climate Change on #Food Production Seriously Underestimated. Another great story on an important topic by Stephen Leahy.

"Extreme #weather, water scarcity, plateauing crop yields, soil degradation and conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, are the main causes."
"The latest #crop models that do incorporate some climate impacts such as hotter temperatures and increased extreme weather show substantial #climate impacts coming well before 2040 in major breadbasket regions of the world."
"#Agriculture is not only highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change but it is also a major source of #carbon emissions. AG #emissions need to fall nearly 40% as part of the global effort to help keep warming below 2 degrees C AND still feed the world’s growing #population."
- Plus there is a list of things that can be done to help.

"World ‘population bomb’ may never go off as feared, finds study."

Well that's all right then.

I'm chuffed that the population is going to peak sooner than expected, followed by a rapid decline. It's great for the planet and the species we share it with.

But we're saddled with an economic system that needs increasing numbers of consumers to survive.

The world needs something like socialism to cater for reduced consumption.

"With #SeaLevelRise and the percentage of exposed #population increasing, without a collective response these two effects will indeed raise exposure to #homeowners, #insurance companies, lenders, municipalities, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and ultimately to the #taxpayer."

Meaning, the effect of #ClimateChange on the housing market could make the 2008 #subprime mortgage crisis look like a walk in the park. It's time for real transparency.

Have they not learned anything from #history or even, I dunno, basic #economics?

Can't #bankrupt the #population then expect the economy not to melt down.

@Andy_Scollick https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2023/1/29/greening-ourselves-to-extinction ... is a fair snipe at the #Billionaire #economics but makes no reference to the left, right and green points of the political spectrum who want to change or reduce individual consumption - *who* should change depends upon which point in the spectrum they're at - yet do not promote the idea of allowing #population to fall by natural and educational means, which is equally essential to survival. We even see nationalists, religious extremists and people like #Musk promoting large families.

For the first time in six decades, deaths in #China outnumbered the number of births last year. If this trend continues, it could mean the Chinese population could shrink by 45%, according to the UN.

Loss of its status as World’s Largest Nation is one thing, but the political impact of any economic downturn resulting from a shrinking population is quite another, and could undermine Communist Party rule.

@milouness the other problem I see is how the article obsesses over the country's economic growth, when instead we should be thinking of quality over quantity. It shouldn't be about how much money moves around the economy, but how to better enrich lives for each of its citizens.

@bradley

In a world whose job market is nearing post-humanity with all the automation, and with China having taken deliberate extreme steps to stave off disaster from overpopulation, and with drought looming as glacial sources of water vanish, it is really beyond stunning that anyone would fuss over a successful trend to get population in check at really any cost. That this is seen as a red flag bodes such ill.

But to fail to understand that population and human-enabled production are not any longer good long-term predictors of long term business seems just poor analysis. Means of production is changing.

Because of climate, basic assumptions underlying the cost and shape of supply chains are changing. Soon, as famine, drought, and disaster recovery plays an ever-expanding role in world matters, priorities and values will change.

The very choice of what junk we sell is heavily based on surplus that cannot be sustained with population or failure to address climate in ways that keep it stable (or at this point return it to stable, if that is even possible) because we will not BE a world of surplus. We'll be a world of scrambling to survive.

The Times needs new experts. Almanacs in the new and changing world are no longer a good cheat sheet that can be substituted for predictive modeling.

I wrote about some related and similarly confused reporting during Covid in my 2020 piece The Two Economies.

Ok, there is now a beta version of the site, displaying the 2022 version of the #data from the UN here: https://beta.populationpyramid.net/

Everything seems rather good, but I spotted a strange behaviour for the #population of Ukraine 2023: https://beta.populationpyramid.net/ukraine/2023/ (the cross on the graph is misplaced).

I'll have to check what's happening. Rather looks like a bug than a problem with the data.

Currently importing the latest world population prospects in https://www.populationpyramid.net/ and I'm kinda excited to see the results.

I'd also like to thank my past self for having made import scripts that are working directly out of the UN excel files, without any manual handling, and the UN for keeping (almost) the same file format 3 years later.

To be honest, this is already something our professional orgs really needed to step up and do more of, IMO...

Speaking as a demographer who studies COVID-19 mortality, it's striking that many demographers contributed greatly to pandemic research but almost never in our own field's journals (they're too slow), so twitter became the place where we found each other's work. With a LOT of negative externalities!

Our associations (or the associations of #population centers) could've really helped

#Introduction time, here’s what I’ve got:

🤩 I’m a big fan of #shoes and sometimes like to share photos of my #ShoesOfTheDay. I’m also a big fan of my kids, my grandkid and my grand-dog. And books. And food.
