I sat in a session today with representatives of DP World, CMA CGN, and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, talking about port resilience in the face of climate change.

When you run into those people that “don’t believe in climate change,” you can tell them two of the largest shipping companies and the world’s largest transshipment port are already dealing with what they don’t believe in.

Using #LibreSSL with #FreeBSD, you have to fix some #ports fallout every once in a while ...

Well, I agree these BUF_* functions (renamed to OPENSSL_* in #OpenSSL since 1.1) are stupid and pointless indeed. Still, "nothing uses these anymore" is a rather bold statement. 🤨

But I want this for Southern #California too. #OilBeach has a speculative bit about imagining taking the #ports away from commercial & US empire control & asserting tribal & civilian stewardship. It's so impossible to imagine San Pedro Bay as a marine sanctuary but this is why we have to.

My answer (ASAP) is an approximation.

For the base system, I read the published #advisories ASAP. I decide whether I'm affected, and how exposed my different machines are. If necessary, I rebuild base from source and update all machines needing the update ASAP.

For ports, I try to keep an eye on "exposed services" (like e.g. my MTA) for servers and at least browsers for desktops. Actually installing an update can take two or three days because I'm building my own package repository using #poudriere.

#NSW parliament passes new laws bringing harsher penalties on #protesters

By Heath Parkes-Hupton
Posted Fri 1 Apr 2022

"The NSW Parliament has passed tough new punishments for protesters the state government says wish to wreak 'economic chaos' on #SydneyAustralia.

"Under legislation that cleared both houses today, people could be fined up to $22,000 and/or jailed for a maximum of two years for #protesting illegally on #PublicRoads, #rail lines, #tunnels, #bridges and #industrial #estates.

"The new offence applies to #ports in #Newcastle, #PortKembla and #PortBotany, but the government says it intends to add more facilities.

"Attorney-General Mark Speakman said the laws applied to activities that 'shut down major economic activity'.

"It comes after a string of demonstrations by #ClimateActivists last month disrupted operations around Sydney's Port Botany, the largest container hub in NSW.

"Members of #BlockadeAustralia staged protests on bridges, roads, freight rail lines and a crane to call for greater action on #ClimateChange.

"This morning, four people were arrested after blocking peak-hour traffic on the Princes Highway in Sylvania.

"#FireproofAustralia has claimed responsibility for that incident, which saw traffic blocked by people holding banners across the road."

Update on my #FreeBSD #Linuxulator "userland from source" project: Fixing "interesting" issues 🙄

I meanwhile created a #ports #overlay, for easy testing in different environments, and trying it on my "productive" builder, there were suddenly lots of failures. The "weirdest" one now took me many days to fully understand: For some ports, "stage" seemed to install the files just fine, yet "package" didn't find any files. 🤯

Turns out installing using #Linux tools created the stagedir below /compat/linux instead. Trying to understand why, the answer was "because it could".

The indirect reason was #ccache, forcing #poudriere to do everything as root by default, and for root, /compat/linux is writable. There are still some other fails, maybe also ccache-related, but at least I just committed a workaround (including a warning) for *this* issue:

@ramin_hal9001 This commit history doesn't look promising. First the original maintainer abandoned it, later someone else marked it broken.

But talking about reproducible builds, you get that with #poudriere (enabling a few options that avoid surpising sources of inconsistencies) and the #ports tree as well. Poudriere builds every package in a clean #jail that only gets the named dependencies installed. Official #FreeBSD packages are built that way.

Felix Palmen 📯

@vermaden IBTD ... #Unicode has been around for long enough and the #UTF8 representation became the de-facto standard everywhere. The #FreeBSD #ports tree is not restricted to #ASCII, but anything outside ASCII needs to be UTF8 to ensure interoperability. What you see here is, well, a bug 🙈

Today's progress on #FreeBSD #Linuxulator "userland from source" project: We have build systems! 🥳

Supported now (apart of plain #make): GNU #autotools (including #autoreconf), #cmake, #meson and #ninja!

They're all supported with their original #ports "USES", by some #bmake trickery in my new "USES=linuxsrc", fixing up just the parts that are different when building from/for the Linuxulator (like adjusting dependencies and commands to use the #Linux-native versions).

Ok, no #scons yet, didn't need it so far 🙈

Felix Palmen 📯

Userland built from source for #FreeBSD's #Linuxulator is making progress again (and yes, my branch builds and works again!)

☑️ Metaports "linuxsrc_base" for a minimal base userland and "linuxsrc-devtools" for minimal basic tools needed to build #Linux software (just C and C++ and some common tools)
☑️ Automatic selection of the Linux kernel version based on target FreeBSD version, overridable in DEFAULT_VERSIONS (but checked for compatibility of course)
☑️ A new "USES=linuxsrc" to do all the ugly "plumbing" needed for building Linux software using FreeBSD #ports, offering different configurations.

Guess now I could start adding some optional packages and try to get some *real* Linux application working 😎

https://github.com/Zirias/zfbsd-ports/blob/linux/Mk/Uses/linuxsrc.mk

So far, looks like officials are not predicting much disruption from the tropical storm at the ports in LA/Long Beach. No mention of impacts on fueling or refining in this, either:

@thindil I'm actually using #LFS as a reference to get around the weirdest issues "bootstrapping" some #GNU toolchain at all. But of course it can't be used as is, LFS expects to be built on some Linux system and even uses #chroot to build some packages, definitely impossible using #FreeBSD #ports.

I certainly don't want two package managers on my system. Plus, a #Linuxulator userland should only install what's *different* from the normal FreeBSD userland, because /compat/linux works as an "overlay".

Trying to create new ports/packages for the Linuxulator userland is cumbersome, first you have to rely on what the repackaged distro offers, second you have to understand the special repackaging magic used.... that's exactly what I *hope* to improve by just building from source. No, I'm not convinced myself yet this is a good idea, I have to try!

Felix Palmen 📯

@jhx I have so many ideas (not only, but also for #FreeBSD), but always too little time 😞

One thing I'd really love to try is to come up with a new set of #linux #ports that don't re-package some dist but instead build from source, using some #GNU cross-toolchain (which *can* be bootstrapped on FreeBSD, BTDT when it was once required for #MakeMKV). In a perfect world, this could maybe enable to create slave-ports of existing FreeBSD ports, building them for /compat/linux instead ... 🤔

Felix Palmen 📯

Random thought about one tiny thing I love about #FreeBSD: #etcupdate! (IIRC freebsd-update incorporates something similar, but I always update from source...)

It does a 3-way compare of /etc (local, old upstream and new upstream) and automatically updates/merges configs, or, as a last resort, marks conflicts.

Unfortunately this won't help with /usr/local/etc (configs for #ports), but it's a start to have it for base and already a big plus over any #Linux #distribution I've seen so far.

A "repost" from (formerly) Twitter, maybe someone on here is interested as well ...

If you're maintaining some #FreeBSD #ports and want to test them on #arm64/#aarch64 (now that it's tier-1 in base), but don't own suitable hardware yourself, you might be annoyed some things don't work with #qemu-user (like, building #rust)

Then, the "always-free" tier in #Oracle cloud could come to the rescue, they offer arm64 VMs! But: What you get from the template is some -RELEASE on #UFS, for testing ports you will need -CURRENT on #ZFS!

Therefore, I wrote a little article how to get there. It's as brief as it can get, certainly doesn't explain every single command, you're expected to know FreeBSD, ZFS and poudriere. Hope it helps someone 😉

Is there a meaningful difference between the USB-B plugs that have the little boxy part on top and the ones that don't?

My monitor came with a "USB 3.0 upstream cable" that has the boxy part. But it has vanished. So I used one that didn't (an old printer cable) to connect it to a usb port on my computer, and it seems to be making the usb hub on my monitor operational for peripherals, including hard drives.

But is there a secret bad to this?
