an update on this orchid pot i never got around posting https://mastodon.art/@florencechan/110585654729294538 .
sky got a coat of Coyote Light Blue. ground got a mystery coat of underglaze which... didn't turn out as expected. but i wasn't able to get it refired before it had to go to its recipient.
oh well, maybe next time?
#FallFinishAlong FINISHED OBJECTS!!!
- Textured Matcha Cup: my top glaze covered the texture a lot more than I would have liked, but I am pleased with the interior ring and want to play more with plant textures.
- Wobbly Vase: Wow, this turned out SO much better than I expected! I love the asymmetry and the ocean-like patterns.
More practice shots. This time a study in contrasts.
These are both by the same potter, Yagi Hiroyuki, using the same clay. The tokkuri is unglazed yakushime with a natural ash-fall spray, what is called goma. The guinomi uses a straw-ash applied glaze and shows off some lovely red yohen (kiln change).
They both use a standard Hagi ware clay mix (Daito/Mitake/Mishima clay), but the guinomi has a real Karatsu ware feel to it.

Ok not real time 😂 - but will add to this thread on trip(s) to #Sakai City, south of #Osaka
Last Satday we enjoyed the rich history here! Trade from the port here to all over the East. Francis Xavier stopped here. So much #pottery from all over the East and world unearthed here.
+ Culture! Sen No #Rikyu * of #TeaCeremony fame was born here, & poet, feminist Akiko. The people at the Sakai Plaza‡ were so so kind, gave us a guided tour
Question for probably #pottery folks:
A friend found this shard in a sand bank in the Sault-Aux-Mountons, Quebec
She thinks it's slip-glazed (from my questions) but covered with algae. No other shards were found. No marks are visible on the bottom.
I'm guessing mid-century, and the pattern probably isn't Western
Fresh from my kiln, a pair of yellow bowls that I made. People visiting my studio always remark on how much they like my yellow glaze when they see it, which I use rarely (ditto my purple and red!) because I just LOVE BLUE AND GREEN glazes so much. As you could guess looking at most of my recent work. But I love yellow too, and these two bowls are mmmm mmm good! :) #art #mastoart #ceramics #clay #pottery
The beautiful painted #pottery bowl, beakers, and cup here are typical of that found at Edge of the Cedars State Park, home to an Ancestral Puebloan archaeological site, now with on site #museum. #Terracotta Creative Commons photo by Pma03. If you're reading this, I'm looking for work. I'm a ceramicist, photographer, and all-around craftsperson based out of the so-called San Francisco Bay Area.
Please let me know about any open positions for a:
🏺 production potter
🎨 studio assistant
🖌️ arts educator
🖼️ museum/gallery staff
I'm currently open to part time work and (paying) internships, ideally in the city proper but I'm also more than willing to commute to the east bay or the peninsula for the right position. If you have any leads on these or similar roles (or, tbqh, any open roles in the arts or arts management), please hit me up!
Thanks for reading this far; please enjoy some of my work as thanks. Boosts very much welcome and appreciated :)
I posted a picture of this terrier teapot I was making in progress last week and it Just came out of the kiln, looking super good! I need to make more of these because as I said I made this for myself as I wanted a medium-small teapot holding two mugs for my breakfast. So, today is a little Christmas for me :) #art #mastoart #clay #ceramics #pottery

I am donating about 50 bowls to a soup kitchen in Ithaca called Loaves and Fishes. My wife happens to work there, and needed promotional photos of a bowl being made... easily done in this household (paying guests on October 18 buy a donated handmade bowl and get dinner, the money goes to the soup kitchen) #art #mastoart #clay #ceramics #pottery
Getting back into the #pottery groove. Those are all 1lb and you can tell I was getting progressively better at thinner walls. Always takes me a bit for the muscle memory to kick back in when I've been away from the wheel for almost a year.
Some of these will undoubtedly be reclaimed (looking at you flared rim bowl) but some of them will make for good prep / salsa bowls.
hey #ceramics and #pottery community - kaolinite (one of the most important minerals in the ceramics world imo) is in the mineral cup again this year! let's get #TeamKaolinite through to the next round! check out @MineralCup and #MinCup23 for more info! and don't forget to vote here: https://www.mineralcup.org/2023/campaigns/campaigns/campaigns/round-1-match
See the happy face on the bear? That's how I feel every time I add a new handmade cup to my collection.
If you are at the Pendleton Art Center-Cincinnati, USA tonight (25 August 2023) from 5-9- I have a couple shelves of new cups---stop by and you can have that happy look on YOUR face too!!!
