They look more like fired clay lumps than actual grog, but many archaeologists lump then together. There's even a small piece of red ochre in the top image. The grog inclusion on the bottom view is striated all the way around it's circumference, which is interesting. #ceramics #archaeology #pottery

an update on this orchid pot i never got around posting https://mastodon.art/@florencechan/110585654729294538 .

sky got a coat of Coyote Light Blue. ground got a mystery coat of underglaze which... didn't turn out as expected. but i wasn't able to get it refired before it had to go to its recipient.

oh well, maybe next time?

- Textured Matcha Cup: my top glaze covered the texture a lot more than I would have liked, but I am pleased with the interior ring and want to play more with plant textures.

- Wobbly Vase: Wow, this turned out SO much better than I expected! I love the asymmetry and the ocean-like patterns.

Side view of textured matcha cup. The bottom has bamboo-like horizontal textures peeking out from below a gradient of drippy-looking glaze
Higher angle of the cup in my hand from another rotation, showing less visible texture but a nice gradient from brown to blue along the exterior, reflected with smaller gradient and pale blue ring along the interior of the cup.
An asymmetrical small and tall curving base with dark blue and light foamy blue patterns in its glaze. Some looks more abstract like paint splatters. Some looks more like a flowing cascade of ocean waves or waterfalls
Another angle, Showing much more of the cascading foamy light colors over the darker base.

More practice shots. This time a study in contrasts.
These are both by the same potter, Yagi Hiroyuki, using the same clay. The tokkuri is unglazed yakushime with a natural ash-fall spray, what is called goma. The guinomi uses a straw-ash applied glaze and shows off some lovely red yohen (kiln change).
They both use a standard Hagi ware clay mix (Daito/Mitake/Mishima clay), but the guinomi has a real Karatsu ware feel to it.

I was always wondering what's the story behind the "studio-Harcourt style" of the pottery photos from the Arslantepe excavation.

#Arslantepe #pottery #ceramics #archaeology

(first photo is from Balossi Restelli, F. 2012. “Eating at Home and ‘Dining’ Out?")

4 photos of ceramics from around 3200 BC found at Arslantepe (eastern Turkey). The arrangement of the ceramics have a kind of "nature morte" arrangement, which is very unusual in archaeology.
A 5th (this time, black and white) photo of the same pots, probably taken in the 1980's as the other photos.

Question for probably #pottery folks:
A friend found this shard in a sand bank in the Sault-Aux-Mountons, Quebec
She thinks it's slip-glazed (from my questions) but covered with algae. No other shards were found. No marks are visible on the bottom.
I'm guessing mid-century, and the pattern probably isn't Western

Hi fediverse!

If you're reading this, I'm looking for work. I'm a ceramicist, photographer, and all-around craftsperson based out of the so-called San Francisco Bay Area.

Please let me know about any open positions for a:

🏺 production potter
🎨 studio assistant
🖌️ arts educator
🖼️ museum/gallery staff

I'm currently open to part time work and (paying) internships, ideally in the city proper but I'm also more than willing to commute to the east bay or the peninsula for the right position. If you have any leads on these or similar roles (or, tbqh, any open roles in the arts or arts management), please hit me up!

Thanks for reading this far; please enjoy some of my work as thanks. Boosts very much welcome and appreciated :)

Getting back into the #pottery groove. Those are all 1lb and you can tell I was getting progressively better at thinner walls. Always takes me a bit for the muscle memory to kick back in when I've been away from the wheel for almost a year.

Some of these will undoubtedly be reclaimed (looking at you flared rim bowl) but some of them will make for good prep / salsa bowls.

6 small bowls rest on a wareboard. The ones on the front left are shorter with thicker walls and the ones in the back right are larger with thinner walls.

Maybe fuelled by outdated ideas regarding #Neolithic hunter-gatherers, there seems kind of a misunderstanding about the "#pottery" part in #PrePotteryNeolithic (PPN).

They actually *did* use vessels. Just other vessels.

A short #SundayArchaeology thread:

Illustration of a Neolithic house with a woman sitting on the roof, working with a pestle in a stone plate on top of another stone vessel and another women inside the house using mortar and pestle, next to here two kids eating from small bowls.
