#Poverty in the US shows a significant increase in 2022.

The number of impoverished children rose dramatically from 3.8 million to 8.9 million, while poverty increased across all groups.

Despite the challenges, reducing poverty is technically feasible by enhancing benefit programs. Persistent poverty reflects a lack of political will to address the issue.

Poverty is a policy choice!

Not only does she expose the movement for the feminism-lite, protect-the-status-quo flash in the pan that it was

She also draws attention to the futility of situating the means of political change in awareness-raising and small personal actions

This headline is certainly true, though some of the specific numbers involved may not be totally accurate because the CPS-ASEC does a poor job of accurately estimating the uptake of tax credit benefits.

Nonetheless, below, I use the microdata files that the Census puts out to produce some figures about who made up the poor in 2021 and 2022."

It’s Easy to Dramatically Cut Poverty. US Policymakers Just Don’t Want To.

Children, the elderly, disabled people, and students continue to make up the vast majority of the US poor. We could easily slash poverty by increasing the generosity and reach of benefit programs for the nonworking population — but lawmakers refuse to do so.

Global Poverty is Preventable Genocide
with Thomas Pogge

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwRD74Ubtt4&ab_channel=MoneylessSociety

Is global poverty improving, or getting worse? In this episode we explore the true reality of the horror of deprivation and mass death from a lack of the basic necessities or generic drugs to cure medieval diseases-- from a lack of money.

Capitalist apologists claim poverty is decreasing, while the line is set at a measly $2 a day-- increase it by even 2 more and the number of people in extreme poverty explodes. 18 million people die every year, 20,000 CHILDREN every day, and 1 in 2 people lives on less than $5.50 a day.

To explore this topic we brought on one of if not THE greatest expert on global poverty, professor Thomas Pogge to counter the establishment narrative that everything is getting better, and work to eradicate poverty as we know it through systemic change.

"Why do I say that this policy choice was stupid as well as cruel?

...First, avoiding much of this human catastrophe would have cost remarkably little money. Second, #ChildPoverty is, in the long run, very expensive for the nation as a whole: Americans who live in #poverty as children grow up to become less healthy and productive adults... Even in purely fiscal terms, refusing to help poor #children may, over time, actually increase budget deficits."
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/14/opinion/child-poverty-america.html

#USPol #USA #News

Text from article:
The cruelty of this choice should be obvious. Maybe you believe (wrongly) that poor American adults are responsible for their own poverty; even if you believe that, poor children aren’t to blame. Maybe you worry that helping low-income families will reduce their incentive to work and improve their lives. Such concerns are greatly exaggerated, but even if you worry about incentive effects, are they big enough to justify keeping children poor?

Why do I say that this policy choice was stupid as well as cruel? Two reasons. First, avoiding much of this human catastrophe would have cost remarkably little money. Second, child poverty is, in the long run, very expensive for the nation as a whole: Americans who live in poverty as children grow up to become less healthy and productive adults than they should be. Even in purely fiscal terms, refusing to help poor children may, over time, actually increase budget deficits.

And the thing is, this didn’t have to happen... It was instead a #political choice. The story is in fact quite simple: #Republicans & a handful of conservative #Democrats blocked the extension of federal programs that had drastically reduced #ChildPoverty over the previous two years, and as a result just about all of the gains were lost.

The United States spends $500,000 for every enemy soldier killed and only $53 annually on the victims of poverty.

Not a tragic mix-up, though. That military spending helps maintain control of resources and markets for the richest Americans, whereas an army of poor people benefits them, too, by keeping wages low.

Poverty and deprivation
Tue Aug 15 2023 - 00:08

Sir, – While many of the recent indicators as part of Measuring Ireland’s Progress (MIP) are positive and, therefore, to be welcomed (“The Irish Times view on Ireland in data: economic progress but social deficits”, August 11th), I would like to draw attention to some other recent data from the Central Statistics Office: “17.7 per cent of people were experiencing deprivation in 2022. This compares with 13.8 per cent in 2021. The deprivation rate for those at risk of poverty was 40.7 per cent in the CSO Survey in Income and Living Conditions 2022 compared with 34.1 per cent in 2021. The deprivation rate for those not at risk of poverty was 14.3 per cent in 2022, compared with 11.2 per cent in 2021.”

I wonder do we have an acceptable level of poverty and deprivation? – Yours, etc,
