I don't think this is the right way to frame this problem.
Our first job is to live long enough that such concerns matter. If we don't do something quickly, we won't have that chance.
That's why I also support the use of nuclear where other tech is not feasible. What matters most is to stop fossil fuels.
If solar panels get us far enough to be worrying about how to replace them, or if nuclear gets us far enough to worry about waste disposal, we'll be in better shape than we are now. There are serious short-term milestones we have to hit to avoid both near-term catastrophes of various kinds and falling over tipping points that lock us into long-term problems in nature itself.
I also think this kind of fearmongering is the kind of stuff you expect to see funded by the oil industry as a reason to delay switching. Any reason for delay favors short-term coal & oil profits but not the survival of the human race.
No one promised us that surviving the Climate Crisis would be easy or even without sacrifice or difficulty. This idea that "oops, this has issues" is a reason not to do it needs to be dispensed with. We can't find the right path by disproving all the others. That will find no paths. There will be issues. But the point is to get the big things done and then to address the issues that remain.

I just read a piece in the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL) Currents publication advocating an economic basis for maintaining and extending the life of nuclear power plants in the US
Personally, I'm fine with nuclear power and have seen little to justify writing it off entirely, especially considering the climate issues we face.
Something to keep in mind when reading this piece is that currently the US generates almost 20% of its power from nuclear reactors. This represents about 778 billion kWh.
Consider also that France generates almost 70% of its electricity from nuclear plants, which represents about 361 billion kWh.
This is completely carbon-free engergy.

The reason Republicans go after trans people, CRT, etc is they have professionals who have done polling & focus groups & examined the psychology telling them there are effective targets.

The GOP Is Trying to Steal Democracy in Ohio. That Has National Implications.
#Ohio is already one of the most #gerrymandered states in the country. Its maps are so unfair that its own state Supreme Court voted multiple times to send the maps back to the drawing board, only to have its rulings repeatedly undermined, the clock run out, and the #illegally #skewed #maps still used in the midterms.
Now, a new threat looms in the Buckeye State. Facing the prospect of a #citizen #initiative to #restore statewide #abortion #rights this November, the GOP-dominated Ohio legislature is moving in advance to block it.
They have proposed a measure to increase the vote requirement for a constitutional amendment from a simple majority to 60 percent, along with making it far harder to qualify a citizen initiative.
In short, the Ohio GOP wants to write in a supermajority requirement, just as the will of the majority, which favors reproductive choice and the protections of Roe v. Wade, is about to make itself heard.
Wait, can they even do that? Just blatantly #move #the #goalposts, right as progressives are getting ready to score?
Unfortunately, there is no legal barrier preventing this. Instead, the people of Ohio need to make it clear that they will not put up with this #power #grab.

This strikes me as enormously important and it reminds me of arguments we had in psych about #Risk assessment, #Capacity etc. These things are time/situation dependant - as practically everything is, to some extent.
Humans may diverge in terms of our own wish to belong to categories (I am not much of a joiner myself) but we seem to be almost universally, and rather dangerously, inclined to place other people and things into rigid categories, stable across time and context. Which almost nothing and nobody is.
We then feel threatened when things don't behave as expected, and we try to control everything to make sure that it doesn't #surprise us.
I suppose it boils down to #power struggle.
I'm an #anarchist because #systems of coercive #authority have never been anything more than protection rackets. People with #power have always violently robbed us while claiming that what they steal is payment for protecting us, but they've always been the ones who hurt us the most.

Theda Skocpol, a professor of political science and sociology at Harvard, contended that many of the developments in states controlled by Republicans are a result of careful, long-term #planning by conservative strategists, particularly those in the #Federalist #Society, who are developing tools to build what she called “#minority #authoritarianism” within the context of a nominally democratic system of government.
Skocpol outlined her thinking in an email:
The first-movers who figured out how to configure this new “laboratory of democratic constriction” were legal eagles in the Federalist Society and beyond, because the key structural dynamic in the current G.O.P. gallop toward minority authoritarianism is the mutual interlock between post-2010 Republican control, often supermajority control, of dozens of #state #legislatures and the #SCOTUS #decision in 2019 to allow even the most #extreme and bizarre forms of partisan #gerrymandering.
These organized, richly resourced actors, she wrote,
"have figured out how to #rig the current U.S. #system of #federalism and #divided #branches, given generational and geographic realities on the ground, and the in many ways fluky 2016 presidential election gave them what they needed to put the interlock in place. They are stoking and using the fears and resentments of about half or so of the G.O.P. popular base to #undo #American #democracy and #enhance their own #power and #privileges. They are doing it because they can, and they believe in what they are doing. They are America’s G.O.P. Leninists.
Skocpol did not pull her punches:
This situation, locked in place by a #corruptly #installed #Supreme #Court #majority and by many #rotten-borough #judicial #districts like the one in #Amarillo, means that minority #authoritarians, behind a bare facade of “#constitutionalism,” can render majority-elected officials, including the president and many governors, officials in name only. The great thing from the minority authoritarian point of view is that those visible chief executives (and urban mayors and district attorneys) can still be blamed for government nonfunction and societal problems, but they cannot address them with even broadly supported measures (such as simple background checks for having military assault weapons).

In that arena, we'll need sizeable positive uses of the latest tech as alternatives, or the early adopters (who are not typical slices of society) will acquire too much leverage & #power.
The good news is that as a #system that's in a far-from-equilibrium state, a phase change can be initiated from small changes in conditions. (See Margaret Meade's famous quote.)
The post-WWII era near unanimous consensus narrative of corporate employers (latest iteration of the Benevolent Dictator fallacy) being critical to a free democratic society has declined in every generation since (~20 yrs). This model now fights for a 1/4 of the support it once had.
The #network narrative is coming up from the opposite direction, already with a majority. What has yet to happen is the passing of the 'investment' phase as the driving force, which is always followed by more public & wider #QualityOfLife motives.
This is a layered effect, built up incrementally with each specific new use case or advancement. #Language skills combined with search & internet servers loaded with shared data- these '#AI #ChatBots' -is just the latest layer in the long march of human social #evolution.

I've been asked why I consider #StartUps making small #apps on top of #OpenAI #APIs a distraction. Well, here goes:
First of all, there's no unfair advantage. Someone easily builds an open source clone which makes exactly the same thing. There is no way these businesses can become profitable before becoming redundant.
Also, let's appreciate the fact that we will get #AGI in months. That is important, and business plans should be evaluated against that.
Think where you will be in that new world. It doesn't matter if you have a small app which calls OpenAI API, that's all obsolete instantly. It doesn't even matter if you have a stable stream of revenue, that will almost certainly dry up.
Things that matter are:
- Who you have in your trusted circle (who you trust, who trust you, who have capacity to see, understand and act fast and correctly);
- what capacity you have to utilize or support AGI for (#industrial, #medical, #military, #scientific, #social, #chips, #power, #internet connectivity, #data, ...);
- what #compute you have available under your own control, not rented (we will have a sudden scarcity of compute at the start, and all cloud rents will go sky high);
- will you have the latest models or not? They won't be published, to get such you need to be in the "game".
This is more important than the internet and the electricity combined. Put your money where it matters, not into gold and derivatives. Remember what "capital" is.
