Got a new scientist block to carve… again. I realized that chemistry trailblazer Marie-Anne Paulze Lavoisier (20 January 1758 – 10 February 1836) was the only of my #womenInSTEM series who only appears with her husband, Antoine Lavoisier (26 August 1743 – 8 May 1794), and not alone.

A miniature print of the tiny, fearsome sea slug Glaucus atlanticus, or the Blue angel nudibranch or Blue dragon.

The Glaucus atlanticus itself is no longer than 1.2" or 3 cm, but it floats upside down on the surface of pelagic waters hunting venomous siphonophores like the Portuguese man o' war & then uses their stinging nematocysts for its own protection. These wee beauties are some hardcore little sea slugs.

The lily-of-the-valley, day lily leaves and black locust leaves are clear on this wet cyanotype.

Along with the photochemicals I used water, vinegar, lilac dye, curry powder, coffee grounds, salt and paprika on this one.

I think I am just going to keep picking the invasive plants like black locust which appear in my yard and make art.

Here’s the alphabet baby quilt with my linocut alphabet blocks! I managed to do this pretty quickly with fabric in my stash.

I do like a pieced quilt back and I wanted to use the playful world map. I’ve had the fabric since my son was a baby. Plus I thought I would use the extra fabric with my zebra linocuts (leftover from when I made Mom a pillow).

I painted vinegar right onto this wet cyanotype on watercolour paper. I think the white spots were salt. There were leaves and flowers but mainly you see the chemistry in the abstract swirling blues, greens, rust and white splotches and hints of leaf silhouettes.

I decided to “whip up” an alphabet baby quilt. I don’t know if it’s reasonable for me, at least, to think that I can whip up any quilt, but baby quilts are small, I already have a collection of carved alphabet lino blocks. I’m avoiding any curves or y-seam and using fabric from my stash. Plus I have textile block printing ink. Wish me luck!

Someone commented that I was like a “mad scientist artist” experimenting with wet cyanotype. I’m kind of loathe to contribute to the mad scientist trope, but also, Bwhahaha!!! Now we’re talking. I dig how those lemon slices turned out.

More experiments with wet cyanotype! I want more active chemistry than more first attempt so I threw more at it.

I used things I had on hand. Instead of straight water I used lilac dye. I used some vinegar, salt, paprika and coffee grounds. Also I am using some finely sliced lemon both as objects to be imaged and a source of moisture and acid to start developing the photo chemicals during exposure.

She was the wrong class, sex & religious denomination to gain the education, opportunity to work & communicate her results or garner any respect as a pioneering paleontologist. Further, during her lifetime many thought the Earth was a mere few 1000 years old, based on a very literal interpretation of the Bible & found the idea of extinction did not fit in with the story of creation.

This was final test print. I did try printing to card but sadly the results weren't great, probably due to insufficent pressure on the first attempt and over-inking on the second. While mine was not the most accomplished or refined print in the room, I really enjoyed the process and am inspired to do more (I'm off to the shops for supplies this afternoon).

A selkie for #MerMay (the mermaid 🧜‍♀️ celebration month)!

This is a hard-carved and printed lino block print of a selkie shedding her skin, seated on rocks, surrounded by harbour seals.

For #WorldTapirDay my #linocut Malayan tapirs, adult and baby. There are four types of tapir; this linocut is of both an adult and baby Malayan tapir. Tapirs always look very dapper, if improbable, in their black and white coat. The adults with their white saddles look like an aardvark crossed with an elephant, wearing a tuxedo.

Tried something new today: cyanotype printing, and I already love it. 🎉

To create this print I used my AxiDraw to plot a previous work with a semitransparent marker on transparency film, and then used that as a negative for the cyanotype exposure process in the sun.

Looking forward to making more of these soon. The possibilities for texture are very, very strong. 🚀
