Why Most Advanced Yet Acceptable Products win: MAYA dictates that the ideal design sits between solutions that are completely novel and entirely familiar. Be too novel and customers will tune you out. Be too familiar and customers will look right past you.

A team working within the framework of product bets needs to intentionally curate the data that informs its decisions. It’s not enough to ship ideas that seem good or get “validated” and then wait for your NPS scores or trailing indicators to reflect the impact.

Some closeups of the Goomba phone. #Blender3D #ProductDesign #Nintendo

A plastic-looking phone consisting of a goomba with a large, tan body, and a distorted brown head for the receiver. The eyes are slightly inset discs, and the eyebrows and mouth appear printed on (slightly raised, shinier than the plastic it's on).
Extreme closeup of the number pad on the phone. The buttons look a little bit soft and very slightly translucent, with raised, black numbers in Century Gothic.

By trying to avoid being wrong at all, these teams made it a lot more expensive to be wrong, and reduced their chances of being right. And the designers got the blame for doing a bad implementation of their stakeholders’ brilliant ideas.

Looking at agile through the eyes of a designer, it’s easy to spot the problem: the dogma of shipping small stuff fast so that you can gather feedback on what to do next more quickly. Agilists believe that finished software is not only the best way to deliver value, but also the best way to learn and iterate.

In reality, it is probably the worst way.

Teaser shot of a Goomba phone I think I'm almost done with (gotta play with the cord physics so it lies on the table) in a Mario-themed room I'm working on. #Blender3D #WIP #EeveeRender #SuperMarioBros #ProductDesign

Next to a bare bed with a green backboard, and atop a yellow wood set of drawers with mushroom knobs, sits a rotund Goomba with a number pad inset in his tummy. His head is the receiver of the phone, as one might infer from the cord connecting it to the base. The scene is lit by bright morning sunlight coming through an unseen window.

#UX designer = free roaming trouble maker (historically)

Product designer = subservient cog in a product delivery process

(Yes I feel like kicking the wasp nest this morning 😉 )

The rise of the #productDesign title feels like it comes about from the industrialisation and commodification of #design and the design-ification of #product and the rest of business.

Design as a profession feels like it's losing here. But more good design is probably being done, so maybe it's a win.

Seems like I wasn’t done making refinements to the Trip screen 😅.

The past couple days, I’ve focused on fleshing out the experience and flow of adding a new trip.

I feel good about the way the location search works (and it even accounts for cases where a user might want to use their own input as a location instead of a preloaded one).

#uxdesign #productdesign

4 mockup screens showing the flow of adding a trip in Chronacle. The first and second screens show a modal that asks the user where they’re going. The third shows the modal with the text “Los Angeles,” and the modal is expanded to include the user’s input. The last mockup shows the modal with just “Los Angeles, CA” and an active action button that says “Let’s Go.”

I wonder if people running Slack communities will see engagement go down with the new Slack Clients?

Stacking all of the Slack groups and hiding the individual notification buttons has forced me to turn off notifications for all but the most critical groups I belong to because the single notification badge on the stack is less useful without the group context.

Designers should always test their work. And that goes for both digital and physical products.

I just moved into a new place with a pretty, designer sink that’s almost completely flat on the bottom, so the drainage is awful. Water just pools around, things like toothpaste or soap just sit there and don’t wash away into the drain. It’s very frustrating.

There’s no way the designer(s) could have used this sink without experiencing issues.

Choice paralysis is the phenomenon where users, when presented with too many options, become overwhelmed and often struggle to make a decision. In UX, this could manifest in users spending excessive time on a page without performing any significant action or completely abandoning a task due to being overwhelmed with choices.

I've been pondering the idea of Silent Design and how recognising that most design is not done by designers makes a lot of stuff make sense.

For instance Design Thinking can be framed as professional designers helping non-designers do the design they were doing anyway but better by using the design methodologies professional designers are expert in.

When a predominately white firm invokes “human-centered design”, it begs the question of which humans we are designing for. These innovations and innovators become hyper-focused with designing a solution to a problem— such as not wanting to physically touch a germ-filled soap dispenser handle — that they forget they’re in a room of white engineers.
