Long, long time ago, to be a good #programmer, one needed to be proficient in #mathematics—discrete structures, algorithms, statistics, and probabilities, at a minimum. But since the birth of open-source libraries, the Web, and the ascendence of the "developer" cast, #IT managed to excise maths from much of its domain, leaving behind only a few dots of maths islands.
But in today's #AI-flooded lowlands of IT, islands of maths has become important, again. Those islands of maths have now grown large and have joined to form continents.
Well, #coders, you must raise their heads from the screen and take in your new environs. You must master mathematics—at least statistics and probabilities, particularly Bayes's Theorem—or be prepared to be trounced by #ChatGPT.

I'm not sure I could trust code generated by #AI, even if guided by an expert #software developer, but could AI be used to translate management gibberish into some kind of requirements specification with the level of precision and lack of ambiguity that developers require? Or is the gap between customer and #programmer just too wide?

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the first computer simulation. Do you know the name Mary Tsingou Menzel? You should! She was the computer programmer responsible.
The idea of carrying out a simulation was the brainchild of Enrico Fermi, who conceived the numerical experiment in collaboration with John Pasta, and Stanislaw Ulam. However, as none of the trio knew how to program a computer, they relied on Tsingou Menzel who designed the algorithm, wrote the code, and ran the simulations on the MANIAC computer at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory.

There are two philosophies in #programming toward handling questionable #data. The first is to check the #integrity of the data every time it’s used. This takes a fair amount of #programmer time, and depending on the size of the data may also take a fair amount of #computer time. It’s a PITA to write, test, debug, and run.
The second is to say “I’ve already checked this data a bunch of times in the program, it’s fine” and skip the integrity checks after the first time. In #scientific programming, this is particularly tempting: the data sets are huge, and writing checks is annoying. The whole thing feels like a waste of time when you’re reasonably sure your code will never run on anything except this particular data set which you already see more of than your family and your pets and you just want to get the damned thing done.
About 95% of the time, I take the first approach. Every time I do it, I’m grumbling to myself. Just finish it, already! And I am uneasily aware that those who take the second approach get their work done faster than I do.
Yes. This is true.
They also get a lot of #garbage results—many of which don’t look like garbage at all. Here comes the ritual chest-thumping … in #bioinformatics, and #biomedical #research generally, those mistakes don’t just lead to flawed publications, as bad as that is. Garbage results kill people.
I just received a lesson in why the first is a really good idea. Let’s be careful out there.

Dear #programmers, #developers, #coders, etc.: If someone says they “wrote a code” or “here are some codes” or other such phrases that use “code” as a singular noun synonym for “program,” does that indicate that they are young and/or inexperienced, or not actually a computer #programmer?
I’ve seen this kind of phrase here and there, and I don’t know if it grates on me because I’m old or because it’s actually incorrect.

We have long suggested GitLab for most @agaric clients because it is in part (but decreasingly?) #OpenSource and, well, you could do pretty much everything on the free plan.

So, after just 6 months, I'm looking for a new job due to the absurd amount of boss's micromanagement and incompetence and I'd love to hear some opinions.
I'd like to get into #infosec, it's been the end-goal for me the last 4 years but I fear I'm not good enough for it. Been a decent webapp #programmer (.NET Core) years ago, did some usual #sysadmin (Linux) stuff past 3 years, now I'm working on a clusterfuck of 5+ years neglected infra of 1300+ VMs (Linux, Windows, no documentation) which I largery fixed, I also do Linux hardening and work with Nessus on vulnerability mitigation, too. I have no certs and no "read the whole tech specs book" knowledge as I can only learn by doing and solving actual problems which makes it harder for me to gauge/sell my skills and get in the door. Any advices/thoughts?
