Spotify's Wrapped for this year was a bit underwhelming for me - I find things on Spotify and then buy them on itunes (I like to own my own copies of things) & then listen to them on my MP3 player so they often don't show up realistically on Spotify's stats. So here's the biggest four albums that I've been listening to in 2023 as curated by me! #music

Sermon: Of Golden Verse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oAHV02IsAk

This album is AMAZING. Spotify recommended it to me randomly and it was love at first listen. Fronted by the mysterious HIM and with James Stewart (of Decapitated, Vader) on drums, it's a primal, heavy #progrock epic that is just perfect all the way through. It's also the follow-up to their similarly brilliant first album "Birth of the Marvellous".

Steven Wilson: The Harmony Codex
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu6oIN5D1fA

Steven Wilson keeps churning out albums (as a solo artist or with Porcupine Tree) - every solo album he does is very different from the previous one & he never looks back so it's always interesting to see what he comes up with next. To me "Prog Rock" is basically "Intelligent Rock" (it can have concepts and stories, it can be super technical, but doesn't have to be either), and The Harmony Codex fits that definition. From the epic 11 minute "Impossible Tightrope" instrumental to the broody "Actual Brutal Facts" to the melancholy "Time is Running Out" there's a lot of great songs on this.

Ann Wilson: Another Door
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-2W2bL1JJg

A bit of a latecomer but I've definitely been listening to this a lot & it is one of my favourite albums of the year. I've talked about this one a bit in a previous post but go listen to it!

Mammoth WVH: II
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIQH0HcdQnE

Mammoth WVH is Wolfgang (son of Eddie) van Halen's band, and they're amazing. Their second album has the same sort of solid Foo-like rock (and humour) as their 2021 debut and I really hope he keeps churning them out because WVH has a lot of talent and deserves to succeed on his own!

Check 'em out!

New #review today: "The second full-length studio album from #ProudPeasant sees the band honing their style and expanding their sound. Full of complex structures and elaborate orchestrations, Communion is clearly #ProgressiveRock, though it is much to the credit of Rapstine and company that it sounds like no other band." #ExposeOnline #ProgRock http://expose.org/index.php/articles/display/proud-peasant-communion-2.html

This week for @Kitty's #TuneTuesday we have a theme of @derthomas #BetterLateThanNever. It's about music you heard well after the fact before you ended up getting into it.

First off, that reminds me of an old Jim Gaffigan bit where he watched a movie decades after it came out...but, whatever.

My choice? #Dragonforce. Maybe a year ago I got into their 2019 album "Extreme Power Metal." And I want to talk about them now... https://songwhip.com/dragonforce/extremepowermetal

#NowPlaying District 97 - Stay For The Ending

Been a big fan of this band and their distinctive brand of #ProgRock for *ages*. Endorsed enthusiastically by none other than Bill Bruford, and featuring a former American Idol finalist on lead vocals, there really is nobody quite like them.

This album, released today on #Bandcamp and the usual streaming plaforms, is a corker: their best since 2012's "Trouble With Machines", I reckon. "Mirror" is the stand-out track.

Do yourself a favor and watch this twelve and a half minute live concert performance of #Rush in 1981 performing their song #Xanadu (lyrics based on the Coleridge poem "Kubla Khan").

If would be difficult to find another "rock" band play with such intonation and dynamics, such clarity and power, or such fullness and richness from only three musicians. This is truly a master performance.

Yes - The Yes Album

The album where Yes became "Yes”, the missing piece being Steve Howe on guitar. And unlike a lot of "prog" albums, these songs are not crammed with too many ideas - just a lot of great playing.

What makes it work, too, is…Tony Kaye. I know Wakeman has his fans, but Kaye is a member of the group who isn't *constantly* drawing attention to himself. He solos when he should, and plays with, and not against, the group otherwise.

But seriously, Rob Fripp really looks like #jacksepticeye on this cover! Until I finally get my hands on Discipline, this album is my favourite of KC: it's really dark and loud, but sensitive and subtle when it needs to be. #NowPlaying: #Yes - Close to the Edge
1998 European #CD reissue.

The fifth studio album by Yes was released #OnThisDay in 1972. Side one is their magnum opus: an 18 minute long gem of #symphonicprog, with many different segments and twists and turns but comes around in the end. Chris Squire's bass is brilliant and so is Bill Brugord's drumming. The latter half of And You And I is amazing and Siberian Khatru absolutely rocks. Great album!

Or rather: I just finished playing this, I play so much now that I am studying again. This album starts off loud and obnoxious - love the first track - but gets very improv later on, and at some point I thought my speakers weren't working anymore. There's a lot to unpack in this album and certainly deserves more listens.

My absolute favourite album by Yes, Gates Of Delirium is a brilliant track that doesn't overstay its welcome despite its 23 minute length. I love the "battle sequence" in the middle: it's epic. Maybe I like it so much because the album is very dense and up-tempo, I tend to lose attention if there's a lot of slow segments but this album keeps you in for the ride all the way through.

#NowPlaying: #PeterHammill - A Black Box
1980 UK pressing.

I found this back in May but I never bothered to listen to it (again) until now, when I'm realising the talent of Peter Hammill. He played most of the instruments on this album himself, including the drums. I always think that is very cool. As for the music, it's very dense and dark at times and sporadically very jittery (A3). I don't think I understand it yet, but it was a more pleasant listen than my first.

My favourite #vdGG album, the addition of the violin and its ethereal feel combined with its relatively accessible songwriting make this an excellent listen. I especially love the violin solo on The Siren Song, that might be my favourite track. The album came with a booklet of lyrics made with a typewriter by a previous owner, how cool is that!
