Hola, gentes que vivís en mi móvil.
Hoy os voy a hablar de un juego que me trae muchos recuerdos: Extermination para PS2. Se trata de un juego de terror y acción que salió en 2001 y que fue uno de los primeros del género en la consola y con una portada espectacular. ¿Qué no os suena? Pues os pongo al día: era el juego en el que controlábamos a Dennis Riley, un soldado que tenía que escapar de una base militar en la Antártida, infestada de monstruos mutantes creados por un virus. Un juego que tenía un sistema de infección, un rifle personalizable y unos gráficos bastante decentes para la época.
Pues bien, Extermination es un juego que intenta imitar a los clásicos del terror como Resident Evil o Silent Hill, pero se nota que es un juego de los primeros y que tiene sus limitaciones. El juego tiene una historia muy simple y predecible, con personajes planos y diálogos malos. Pero hay que reconocer que tiene su encanto y su misterio, y que te mantiene intrigado hasta el final. El juego tiene una jugabilidad muy tosca y frustrante, con una cámara que no ayuda nada, unos controles que no responden bien y unas físicas que no tienen sentido. Pero hay que admitir que tiene su reto y su emoción, y que te hace sentir la presión y el peligro. El juego tiene una dificultad muy alta y desequilibrada, con enemigos que te matan de dos golpes, poca munición y pocas curas. Pero hay que aceptar que tiene su gracia y su diversión, y que te hace usar la estrategia y la habilidad. El juego tiene un diseño de niveles muy aburrido y repetitivo, con escenarios vacíos, puzzles simples y poca variedad. Pero hay que apreciar que tiene su estética y su atmósfera, y que te hace explorar y descubrir.
Lo mejor del juego es el rifle, que se puede modificar con diferentes accesorios y modos de disparo. Es una gozada poder personalizar tu arma según tu gusto y tu situación. El rifle es tu mejor amigo en este juego, y te sacará de muchos apuros. El juego también tiene algunos momentos de tensión y sustos, pero son muy escasos y previsibles. Aún así, te hacen saltar del sofá y ponerte nervioso.
En definitiva, Extermination es un juego que tiene sus defectos, pero también sus virtudes. Un juego que fue uno de los pioneros del terror en PS2, y que merece un reconocimiento por ello. Un juego que me hizo sentir el horror, pero también la aventura. Un juego que me hizo disparar, correr y sobrevivir. Un juego al que se puede volver a jugar hoy en día, si se le tiene cariño.

For the past few days, I've been digging through some old 1999 and Year 2000 Sony promotional CDs for ECTS and E3. It's mostly PS2-related stuff, as you might expect, and there's a lot of cool stuff from press releases to 16-bit colour pack shots and renders.
On the E3 one, there are some nifty diagrams of the beating hearts of the PS2, the Emotion Engine (CPU) and the Graphics Synthesizer (GPU), and some snazzy promo shots of the black monolith of wonder itself in synthy blue and red.
42.7 million transistors sounds like a wild amount (and it was for the time) until you look at today's newest GPUs; the GTX 4090 has 76 BILLION of the little things.

I finished .hack//infection last night, and I remembered them being longer than it was. I didn't do everything, but it only took 20 hours to complete most things and that included quite a bit of messing around. Probably going to start up Mutation tonight
I'm not sure if it's a PCSX2 issue or just something with my PC, but I had so many crashes and blue screens while playing. It got to the point where I mapped the save state hot key to one of the grip buttons on my steam controller.

Noticing the headless Statue of Liberty was a real ho-shizz moment.
The PS2 port of Deus Ex is a really interesting version, though the console really struggles to keep up a smooth framerate at times so it's not always that pleasant to play. But refinements introduced in it were backported into the GOTY release of Deus Ex for PC.

I'm Kris, I'm an amateur photographer, amateur musician, wannabe amateur artist... Just generally amateur. I've got a lot of ideas, but I mostly never get round to following up any of them.
This is a self-hosted #Akkoma instance currently living on an old Acer Aspire Revo 3600 chugging away in the corner of my room; when I eventually get round to finishing any of the stuff I'm working on (music, zines, etc.) I'll post them here. I might run a #pixelfed instance for photos and things as well if this box will handle it (and if there's any real point in having a single-user PixelFed server).
Otherwise I'm generally exploring the #fediverse, occasionally playing #GameCube, #PS2 and #PS3 games (do they count as retro these days?), and trying to motivate myself to get things done. And mostly failing in that endeavour.

I've been playing Champions of Norrath on my #PS2 and last night I finally defeated the Ant Queen! I'm ready for a change of scenery after this creepy crawly ant hill. Can't wait to see what's next; it's my first playthrough. #RetroGaming
The #aynOdin runs #Android unless I'm mistaken, but the upcoming #aynLoki is going to have a #ryzen chipset so I wonder what OS it will use. It's probably going to be a #SteamOS or some custom #Linux build. Thing is, I mainly want it for #emulation of #retrogames, namely #Wii, and #PS2/PS3. Might be better off getting a #SteamDeck?
I'm interested in exploring the #Wii and #PS2 #videoGames I missed when I was in college, so I'm looking into buying a #retroid or #aynodin.

It's got an #AMD Athlon processor and a Radeon GPU!? What a weird chip, but it makes sense for the application. $250 ain't bad for a good set of analog controls!
The "Trash Picked #PS2 Slim" is complete. This was LITERALLY found at a trash dump. Got a new DVD drive, a new 3D-printed "top trim" piece for looks (top left) and a VERY generic and sketchy DualShock 2 clone, itself repaired using the analog sticks from another generic USB PC gamepad.
There are also FreeMcBoot and MX4SIO cards, which allows me to run games from a 32 GB SD Card ("recicled" from a 2DS, which got upgraded to 64 GB) .
The best fun is RECICLED fun 😊

Spending the morning watching the excellent documentary on the history of #CrystalDynamics by NoClip. It covers the development of everything from #Gex to #TombRaider to the cult classic #LegacyOfKain.
Really insightful look into a lot of early #GameDesign process, and even big shifts like remaking entire games
aaand i forgot to add my age to my introduction...so anyway i'm 21 lol. another thing i forgot is to mention that i primarily play on #pc but i also play on my #3ds and #ps2 (with an actual #crtmonitor !). @kelbot my all-time favourite #retroComputers / #retroGaming #consoles are probably the #MSX2, #SNES and #PS2 though, as that's what I have the most games for. Especially the first two, as I grew up with those systems.
The #MSX was a big part of my early childhood. While it may not be the most well-known system/standard internationally, I used it not just for #gaming, but also for writing and printing my elementary school reports on, doodling and messing with music.
