10 hardest things about writing/revising/publishing:

10. Writing the actual words
9. Making sure the words actually say what you meant
...
3. Figuring out where the damn chapter breaks go
2. Coming up with a title that's, like, interesting, but doesn't give the game away
1. Writing back copy and the blurb!

So, #writers and #writingCommunity ... can we chat a bit about traditional #publishing vs. #SelfPublishing?

Do you think non-fiction is a better fit than fiction for self-publishing?

Do you think pursuing agents, navigating contracts, and courting publishers is a waste of time in 2023?

Do you value self- and traditionally-published books differently? Do traditionally published books retain a kind of glamor over self-published books?

This article by @janiceharayda captures some of my main issues with the modern #publishing industry, as well as the pressures on #art and #artists in general in the age of social media.

Since we can't measure what will be good / bad for individuals or groups, and we can't know what is good or bad for individuals / groups not ourselves, double-blind / anonymity periods / bans etc. come from individual preferences. Applying mathematical logic to these preferences doesn't make sense.

#peerReview #publishing #socialMediaBan 2/

[anonymity period, social media, academic fights] I have definite opinions about these things, that openness is better & there shouldn't be restrictions abt talking about your work by conf.s or journals.

& have been thinking of how to get some quantitative evidence of how one approach is better than the other.

It is an impossible task. I'm coming around to the idea that double blind is used b/c it can be ~measured, while other pros/ cons cannot.

I ponder giving up on writing. I no longer feel any resonance that kept me going in the past. It was never easy but I always had people who got in touch, commented, critiqued, etc Without Facebook and Twitter, and without a publisher, I'm writing into a void and I feel increasingly discouraged. I can no longer convince myself that what I do is good, necessary and that it touches people. Maybe it's time to stop, after 11 years and focus on something else. #writing #publishing

Just ran across this interesting looking anthro article, by Hosna Sheikholeslami, on a specific Iranian form of invisible publishing labor: "Invisible Experts: The Curious Case of the Book Knower in Iran." Below is the last paragraph of the introductory section.

#Publishing #Expertise #Labor #Mediation #Valuation

https://doi.org/10.1111/awr.12248

"First, I unpack how and why the efforts of the ketab shenass might be best analyzed at the intersection of invisible labor and mediation and provide some general context for the figure within the Iranian book industry. Then I analyze a scene at the Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF) to explore why the country's book industry necessitates the mediating labor of the ketab shenass. In the third section, I compare the figure to several other mediating experts who also help Iranians navigate the unreliability of the book market. By teasing out the distinctions between the categories, I articulate the particularity of the mediation of the kebab shenass and the nature of their knowledge. In conclusion, I analyze the various gradations of their mediation to answer the central question of why their labor is not compensated financially."

I want to be clear: when I talk about #publishing, I'm not (just) talking about my own experiences. I've spoken to a lot of writers about a lot of situations. When I cough up a bit of advice, it's based on the experiences of multiple people.

We always hear the success narratives, and those are useful. It can also be useful to recognize how to (try to) avoid pitfalls that have swallowed others.

Draft2Digital: Stop letting censorship be an excuse to fuck over your authors

Last week, I received an email from Draft2Digital about my short story collection Whips & Fangs.

The collection is blocked from most major etailers for dubcon and noncon -- content that those etailers have no problem with in mainstream romance books.

Rather than supporting authors against these unfairly applied policies, @draft2digital is enabling them.

Wow, (over) 30 years of the PDF. I use them daily. From the linked article:

"The concept of PDF - Portable Document Format - actually began with the Camelot Project in 1990. And Camelot itself would be nothing without the very backbone of the idea, PostScript, which started all the way back in 1985, and kickstarted the desktop publishing software revolution.

Back in those days, cross-platform compatibility was a nightmare, which led Dr. John Warnock, co-founder of Adobe, to initiate that project. Its goal was simple in its concept but ambitious in its execution: create a format that would enable anyone to send any document electronically to anyone else, and that person would be able to read and even print it with its formatting perfectly preserved.

...to us jaded computer users nearly at the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, this may sound like nothing to be excited about, but back in the 80s and 90s, which was the personal computerโ€™s infancy, this was a big deal.

...back then, you couldnโ€™t be sure which software someone would be using. You wouldnโ€™t even know which fonts were installed on their machine. If you used one that wasnโ€™t in that other computerโ€™s repertoire, it could at best mess up your documentโ€™s formatting. To make matters worse, there was the Mac/Windows divide which was often viewed as a deal-breaker. Many remained convinced a file created on one type of computer could not be opened on another."

I published my first academic paper thirty years ago.

Overnight, a researcher contacted me to ask if I had the data for the main figure in the paper so that they could reproduce it.

Could I help? The data was from the time before Windows, 5.25-inch floppy discs, and graphs sent from a Unix environment directly to a printer for redrawing for publication by a cartographer.

You bet! In my archive, there was the original input data and code (Fortran77). And now shared.

In Australia, authors & illustrators are paid for the use of their books in libraries & educational institutions.

These are called Public & Educational Lending Rights (PLR/ELR).

This means that, even if you donโ€™t buy my books, borrowing them (or ordering them) means that I get paid. And thatโ€™s great.

Better still, this year they also counted ebooks (thanks to the Australian Society of Authors).

Elsevier, a Dutch company that claims to publish 25% of the worldโ€™s scientific papers, reported a 10% increase in its revenue to ยฃ2.9bn last year. But itโ€™s the profit margins, nearing 40%, according to its 2019 accounts, which anger academics most.

"More than 40 leading scientists have resigned en masse from the editorial board of a top science journal in protest at what they describe as the โ€œgreedโ€ of publishing giant Elsevier."

Elsevier's profit margin is around 40%. Claiming that academic publishers prey on researchers, more than forty leading scientists are setting up "a nonprofit open-access journal".

Publicly-funded knowledge should be free.

More than 40 leading scientists have resigned en masse from the editorial board of a top science journal in protest at what they describe as the โ€œgreedโ€ of publishing giant Elsevier.

The entire academic board of the journal Neuroimage, including professors from Oxford University, Kingโ€™s College London and Cardiff University resigned after Elsevier refused to reduce publication charges.

Academics around the world have applauded what many hope is the start of a rebellion against the huge profit margins in academic publishing, which outstrip those made by Apple, Google and Amazon.

Neuroimage, the leading publication globally for brain-imaging research, is one of many journals that are now โ€œopen accessโ€ rather than sitting behind a subscription paywall. But its charges to authors reflect its prestige, and academics now pay over ยฃ2,700 for a research paper to be published. The former editors say this is โ€œunethicalโ€ and bears no relation to the costs involved.

'"Too greedy": mass walkout at global science journal over โ€˜unethicalโ€™ fees'

The publisher is Elsevier, the journal is Neuroimage. The same team of editors is establishing a nonprofit open-access journal in its place.

This is big. No #embargoes. No #APCs.

"The #EU is ready to agree that immediate #OpenAccess to papers reporting publicly funded research should become the norm, w/o authors having to pay fees & that the bloc should support #nonprofit scholarly publishing models.

In a move that could send shockwaves through commercial scholarly #publishing, the positions are due to be adopted by the Council of the EU member state governments later this month."

There, at the end of the day,
with twilight whispers,
and shades weaving tales.
I lost my innocence,
somewhere along the way.

It was a dream within a dream,
of a world as I wanted it to be.
A bad incarnation of stories,
prejudices, and beliefs,
showing how things should be.

Free as a bird, in my ignorance,
just like the wind that does not listen,
breaking waves with my strength,
refusing to accept
I will grow weak one day.

. . .

Author copies of my book have arrived!

After over a decade of working on First Family, it's surreal to finally hold the final product in my hands. Official release: June 6.

This has been on my mind for a while, but I finally sat down and did a quick post about it.

People complain a lot about content, but 1) don't really know or care about why things are the way they are, 2) aren't willing to pay for the content they say they want to exist, and 3) evidence shows that when it does they don't actually find + consume what they claim to want.

So so so proud of my wife, who has sold her first novel, OLIVE DAYS, written while working full-time and raising 3 kids. It's a beautiful story (yes, I've already read it multiple times) about love, faith, identity, and Los Angeles. Can't wait for everyone else to read it, too!
