:debian: Setting up a minimal #Debian 12.1 "bookworm" on a virtual machine, on the university's #vSphere, first for testing but looking to turn it into a template. Currently, we have mostly been creating Ubuntu 20.04 guests. With no commercial support, nor any special need for Ubuntu, I believe Debian can be an even healthier GNU/Linux system for most deployments. I will have to configure #Puppet on it and then convince my co-workers, but I have a feeling they will be on board with the idea too.

Every #puppet builder will tell you making hands is the worst part of it. This was basically a form of puppet builder’s torture and took nearly 2 hours for *one* but you can’t argue with results.

I think a lot about how I grew up in fortuitous windows of #syndication.
First up was #CaptainScarlet (and the Mysterons),* the lesser-known cousin of #Thunderbirds by the Andersons. First aired 1967–68, syndicated on the BBC in the 1990s and dubbed into #HeritageLanguage(s) including Hindi!
I definitely got my first taste of mid-century modern furniture and fashion, a love for Chicago's corn-cob brutalist #MarinaCity, the suspicion of oligopolies, grand narratives of terrorism and cowboy heroism, and the early lesson of 'good doesn't always win' and there are serious consequences and collateral damage inflicted on ordinary people in war. While the main character being immortal turns into 'suicide mission of the week', and there's a lot of dated stereotypes, there's a lot of ground that's covered as a kids show that you probably couldn't get away with now. (The fear in the music still gives me chills).
My favourite takeaway is how it uses mixed media. Live-action effects (like fire and the signature two ring lights) on #puppet-sets. Real objects like clocks. Every 'hand-based' interaction uses filmed hands (#ScottMcCloud describes a similar effect in #UnderstandingComics using naturalism to achieve intimacy). And the credits use an animation style that tells the stories they didn't tell. I love how it all works together as a unit.
*Yes, those Mysterons and that track covered and reimagined by #Portishead.

I'm trying to rally to hit more #thrift shops this evening to complete or otherwise perfect my #puppet before I put him in front of a camera tomorrow.
Before that, however, I needed to eat, so I wolfed down some grape tomatoes that fell on the floor at the supermarket checkout (w/o an offer to replace), some veggie nuggies (that my microwave never fully cooks) and some SOLID BLACK Spicy Pineapple Jalapeno Doritos. I admire the ethos behind them and I'm a Hawaiian pizza fan, but they're GROSS.

Are legal departments even going to let you keep using HashiCorp products if there is now an obligation to confirm every new product and feature doesn’t compete with HashiCorp? Overnight all the consensus that Terraform was the Right Tool for infrastructure is gone.

I guess that’s it then.. I’m probably not going to continue building my #hashicorp #nomad cluster and will probably go #proxmox instead. Pity as I was planning on using #terraform to setup the lot (had it and #puppet building the cluster so far).
Honestly what a kick in the gut expertise wise. All that time invested and then a rug pull (or at least the indication there’s one potentially coming). Even if terraform and nomad weren’t to change this is a bad enough taste that I don’t want to invest more time in it at home.
Friday was my last day at #Puppet after nearly 6 1/2 years… I start a new adventure at LTN Global Monday and find that fact a little mind boggling. I’m looking forward to meeting new people and doing my #DevOps & #SRE thing in a new environment… but it’s simultaneously weird to think about being somewhere different.

I'm a computer handyman from France, right now living in Japan and soon in the US. I've worked on automation projects using #Ansible, #Puppet and even #CFEngine (that was not a good time). I was part of a team working on an :debian_logo: based OS geared towards engineers.
In my own time I'm working on my #homelab running on SFF computers and right now I'm transitioning from a docker-compose based config to Kubernetes.
I also love playing videogames. I mostly played strategy games but I recently got a switch and – to my surprise – really liked playing Hollow Knight and Celeste, despite initially sucking at it. Right now I'm playing Dredge with my girlfriend.
I've traveled around Europe on my bicycle and I'm looking forward to the next trip.

2022 was also the end of my ten-year run at Puppet. From tech writer to sr. director of IT ops, with director of docs, director of platform engineering, director of eng operations, and chief of staff in between.

Is #NixOS the best avenue for creating VMs in a repeatable way? Or do people still prefer #chef / #puppet / #ansible ?
I really like the declarative aspect of #Nix, but I can't tell if it also adds unexpected complexity?

Back in 2019, my friend, who can knit, and I spent an entire year at #crochet and #knit to make a giant Flying Spaghetti Monster for a local convention. @caveman helped turn it into a #puppet with moving eye stalks and a noodly appendage that could touch those #pastafarians it encountered. When carried by two pirates, the whole thing was 2 stories tall. It might be the coolest thing I have made. The noodles are loom knit with crochet ends. Meatballs are crochet with much use of popcorn stitch.
