I did say the *most naive* first guess, so I based the range on 1023^(1/2) and 987654^(1/3). As you point out this can be considerably improved.
My point was that computationally it would be practically instantaneous to find any solutions if I could be arsed to write the code. :-)
Actually, it might be interesting to see how it works in other number bases. (I'm not a big fan of 10-centric problems.)

This one's the Cast O'Gear from Hanayama Metal Puzzles, an award-winning puzzle created by Dutch designer Oskar van Deventer. I'm just okay at mechanical puzzles like this so it's fun to have a chance to play around with this one and get a feel for how it works
