For anyone looking for Covid info for Montreal as cases rise (people are still being hospitalized and dying from Covid in Montreal and Quebec in rather large numbers). It's not being tracked very well (Sante Mtl isn't providing any info anymore, Quebec is only reporting once a week, obviously most cases of Covid go unreported unless someone is hospitalized). There's a lot of Covid out there in the city, be careful and get a booster, a lot of people I know are testing posting positive and I'm hearing reports of some people getting very sick. Very few people are being cautious (I went to see Godzilla yesterday, an empty afternoon showing but we still wore masks because we'd rather be safe than kicking our own sorry sick asses later). LOTS of unmasked people coughing on the metro and not covering their mouths! (Have we all suddenly decided that we're not going to cough into an elbow anymore either? Or are these people just coughing so much that's harder to keep doing?)

Je viens de me rappeler de la fois où j'ai fait une recherche sur les Béothuks (nation autochtone de Terre-Neuve) pendant mon bacc en histoire, et que j'y ai réfuté brièvement la théorie selon laquelle cette nation était descendante des Scandinaves. C'est une théorie passablement minable que la plupart écartent du revers de la main.
J'ai pas écrit que c'était de la suprématie blanche ou utilisé un buzzword anticolonial: j'ai rien dit de "proto-woke". Rien d'étonnant, juste de la rigueur, donc.
Mais ça a mis mon prof - un chargé de cours nationaliste à la Lionel-Groulx - tellement en colère qu'il m'a donné C+. Ma copie était remplie de commentaires passifs-agressifs. Rien sur la métho ou sur le contenu, en substance.
C'était vers 2006-2007. En ce qui me concerne, c'était un travail scolaire qui devait valoir 15-20%, et je cherchais pas la performance à tout prix, donc j'ai laissé passer sans demander de révision.
On a l'impression que ce genre d'incident ferait systématiquement la Une aujourd'hui, du style: "une étudiante se plaint de son prof "colonialiste" - le prof se dit censuré par l'extrême-gauche"
Mais j'ai plutôt le sentiment que les gens continuent généralement d'endurer sans faire d'esclandre. Les profs continuent d'agir dans une certaine impunité et les étudiant-e-s essaient de passer au travers en serrant les dents.

Some of the arguments in favor of "ax" being just fine are similar to those arguments in favor of the dialect of French that I speak. Some of the "incorrect" aspects of my dialect are merely features of the language that became archaic in France.

🧵 As I Swedish Death Clean my house (though I’m not dying) I’ve come across something that I need to find a good home for. These are 3 issues of « Les aventures de l’Agent IXE-13, L’as des espions Canadiens » from the 1950s, that I found at the bottom of a cardboard box at a Quebec flea market.
I’d like to gift them to someone from Quebec with an interest in popular culture in 20th century French-speaking Quebec.
