One of the amazing Threads of Survival craftivism squares in the Quilted exhibition at #Huddersfield Art Gallery this month.

For some reason, it feels fitting to post it this evening.

#BorisJohnson #quilting #fiberarts

A heavily stitched quilt panel, featuring a drunken man, with shaggy blonde hair, lying on the floor holding a bottle of champagne in his hand. He's in front of some black metal gates and behind him, there are buildings. It's Boris Johnson, passed out in front of Downing Street. The words "Party Gate" are written around his prone form.

If you like novelty fabrics, with illustrations or a theme, have you tried the Tall Tales Block by Kate Basti? I have many fun fabrics (in small amounts) of animals and Eiffel Towers and whatever else tickled my fancy and they’re perfect for the pattern. These aren’t quite complete because they’re supposed to have strips on all sides—I will do one double wide one between the books when I sew them together. The pattern is on Etsy. Here are some Christmas themed books. #quilting #quilt

If you like #textiles or #fiberart and are anywhere near #WestYorkshire, I'd heartily recommend checking out http://woveninkirklees.co.uk/

There are 100+ events happening, the vast majority of which are free: workshops, talks, walks, exhibitions, working mill tours...

The #Quilting exhibition includes political craftivism, quilts made collaboratively by local communities, and work by artists - both traditional and abstract. Gorgeous work!

Lots of natural #dyeing and fun repair sessions too.

Some panels on a large, political quilt. The panels, which are beautifully stitched, are about protecting the NHS and people's experience during covid. The first panel on the left lists hospitals at risk of closure, the centre panel is a yarn covid virus cell and the right panel features raised solidarity fists saying "Fight back for our NHS".

Two years ago & new to the area, I volunteered on some local walks as part of the textile festival, WOVEN in Kirklees. A conversation I had on one of those walks has directly led my life down a different path that I could have ever predicted & spawned a new career.

Two years on, I've helped put together this year's festival. We launched on Saturday with a day long fashion + music fest in Dewsbury (exhausting fun!) and this week, I'm helping to install a #Quilting exhibition in #Huddersfield.

A set of leaflet titled "Quilted" in a plastic display, on a wooden bench. Next to the leaflets, there's an old suitcase. The floor and the walls are lovely old wood: this part of the exhibition is in a museum.

Figured out a big #quilting trick tonight: if two blocks aren't #sewing together nicely, rip, and re-sew, but this time put the block which was on top, on the bottom - then assembly works aka consistent seam-allowance, no ripples, and no stretching of one or the other fabric.

Behold!! I am inworld in #SecondLife on my desktop computer for the first time in what seems like months!!!
Now listening to Fuzzball Ortega's radio show on https://scifi.radio/ on my parcel, and just in time for Relay Weekend!!! I am so, SO happy.

My desktop will now live in my RL guestroom, along with all my sewing stuff (I had been learning to do #quilting before the #homerenovation project started in February).

Time to reconnect with my #RelayinSecondLife team the #SteelheadSalmons and kick some butt.

You can hear the running water in the ditch, from the much needed rain, that fell the past few days 👏 & at the end, the deer barking, to warn the others, a human was spotted.

I could exercise restraint, pursue elegance and a monochromatic wardrobe or I could be true to myself, embrace chaos, and spend far too many hours quilting the gold fake silk lining of the floral biker jacket I'm making.

I finally finished this quilt. Fabric from 1 pack of charm squares that my mother gave me for my birthday 2 years ago; some of my Dad’s shirts (I still have so much fabric from these despite having used them in multiple quilts! There is so much fabric in a man’s shirt!); a thrifted sheet; some Toile de Jouy from somewhere (Besançon?); and scraps. The best sort of improvised quilt! #recycledmaterials #recycledfabric

The back of the quilt is made up of 10 inch scrap squares in similar colours to the front.
The quilt is draped on chairs in front of a pale pink climbing rose growing in a large tub, against a wooden fence.

Here’s the alphabet baby quilt with my linocut alphabet blocks! I managed to do this pretty quickly with fabric in my stash.

I do like a pieced quilt back and I wanted to use the playful world map. I’ve had the fabric since my son was a baby. Plus I thought I would use the extra fabric with my zebra linocuts (leftover from when I made Mom a pillow).

I decided to “whip up” an alphabet baby quilt. I don’t know if it’s reasonable for me, at least, to think that I can whip up any quilt, but baby quilts are small, I already have a collection of carved alphabet lino blocks. I’m avoiding any curves or y-seam and using fabric from my stash. Plus I have textile block printing ink. Wish me luck!

I spent the morning designing and prototyping this glue stick cap/nozzle combo that allows you to apply glue more precisely. The aim is to replace expensive glue 'pens' used in English Paper Piecing (https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/how-to-english-paper-piecing-4588714)

From this prototype I've learned that a friction fit isn't strong enough to hold the cap on while dispensing glue. Furthermore, if you try to get around this by holding the cap down, the print fails before the glue comes out.

To remedy the first problem I'm going to try a glue stick with a screw-on cap. The second will require me to abandon the use of vase-mode for the print (boo!) so that I can make the walls thicker.

Ta-da! Wonky nine patch garden quilts. A quilter pitched this block as a way to use up not-so-favourite fabrics and those that may not play well with others. I made two quilts and this week practised using my floating foot to free motion quilt them. They were as fast and fun to quilt as they were to piece! #quilt #quilting

And finally, because we've used coloured threads for the sashiko on the front...

...and have stitched through the batting and backing...

we get a series of beautiful patterns on the rear of the quilt as well.

This was a lovely collaborative project. I hope to do more quilting soon.

Using your sewing skills (or, in this case, with the collaboration of someone far more skilled than myself), the 9 cyanotype panels were joined together.

Cotton batting and a white rear panel were tacked in place.

To join the front and rear, lines of the pattern were picked out in hand-stiched sashiko...

As I've shown previously, you can also use cyanotype to custom dye some thread.

For this quilt, we used a mix of plain white, speckled blue, and full blue threads.

THREAD 6/x

After you've exposed the print, wash the fabric well.

You get (somewhat obviously) a negative version - or should that be a positive version? - of the original cyanotype.

Now, repeat until you have the required number of printed fabric pieces.

Two prints shown here.

I used 9 for a 3x3 quilt.

THREAD 5/x

#origami #cyanotype #transparent #metamorphogram #blueprint #tato #quilt #PaperFolding #PaperNegative #tissuepaper #octagon #geometric #quilting #sashiko
#CameralessPhotography

Cyanotype print on fabric from a paper negative. It is a deep blue with some pale blue and white triangles swirling anticlockwise around the centre. the border is deep blue
Second print of the same design
Alun Kirby

Now all you need is some cyanotype coated fabric.

I used squares of cotton cut slightly larger than the image. This gives room for seams.

Put the negative on the fabric, squeeze everything together (I used a contact frame) and expose in the sun.

THREAD 4/x

You can use tissue paper cyanotypes as paper negatives to print from.

You can also speed up the exposure time a little by doing what Victorian photographers used to do with their paper negatives.

You can oil it.

This gives it a bit more transparency, as you can ... ahem... clearly see.

THREAD 3/x

#origami #cyanotype #transparent #metamorphogram #blueprint #tato #quilt #PaperFolding #PaperNegative #tissuepaper #octagon #geometric #quilting #sashiko

A tissue paper negative, which was white and blue, has been treated with oil. The white colour has become transparent. The picture shows a transparent area with some blue triangles, and a hand clearly seen through the paper
Alun Kirby

After exposure, development and drying, the image becomes a 'metamorphogram', a cyanotype which was exposed in one form but visualised as another.

Metamorphograms are both subject and object. It takes a picture of itself as a tato. Unfolding reveals that picture.

Layers in the paper become shades of blue and white

THREAD 2/x

#origami #cyanotype #metamorphogram #blueprint #tato #quilt #PaperFolding #PaperNegative #tissuepaper #octagon #geometric #quilting #sashiko

Here's how I made a quilt, using cyanotype paper negatives to print the fabric, in collaboration with tetxile artist Tessa Layzelle (on IG: https://www.instagram.com/tessa__layzelle/)

It all started with a Tato - an origami 'purse' folded from cyanotype-coated archival tissue paper.
