"The following synopsis, including editorial license that adds important death details which defy the nuclear industry’s bogus claims about nuclear safety, opens closed pathways to what’s really going on.
"After thirteen years, the declaration of a State of Emergency for #FukushimaDaiichi Nuclear Power Plant still cannot be lifted because of many unknowns, as well as ubiquitous deadly radiation levels. The destroyed reactors are tinderboxes of highly radioactive spent fuel rods that contain more cesium-137 than eighty-five (85) #Chernobyls. Cesium-137 in or near a human body erupts into a series of maladies, one after another in short order, depending upon level of exposure: (1) nausea (2) vomiting (3) diarrhea (4) bleeding (5) coma leading to death.
"The spent fuel rods at the Fukushima nuclear reactor site are stored in pools of water on the top floor of compromised reactor buildings 100 feet above ground level, except for Unit 3 which completed removal of its spent fuel rods in 2019, an extremely slow, laborious process that’s highly dangerous.
"Stored spent fuel rods in open pools of water are the epitome of high-risk. 'If the 440 tonne vessel collapses, it could hit the storage pool next to it. If this pool is damaged, even partially, another major disaster could occur.' (Kobayashi) In that regard, there’s significant risk of collapse in the event of a strong #earthquake. And #Japan is one of the most earthquake prone countries in the world. 'The city (Tokyo) government’s experts reckon there is a 70% chance of a magnitude 7, or higher, quake hitting the capital within the next 30 years.' "In a squat rig fitted with a 5,000-gallon tank, Peter crisscrosses the expanse of farms and woods near the #Ohio / #WestVirginia / #Pennsylvania border, the heart of a region that produces close to one-third of America’s #NaturalGas. He hauls a salty substance called '#brine,' a naturally occurring waste product that gushes out of America’s oil-and-gas wells to the tune of nearly 1 trillion gallons a year, enough to flood Manhattan, almost shin-high, every single day. At most wells, far more brine is produced than oil or gas, as much as 10 times more. It collects in tanks, and like an oil-and-gas garbage man, Peter picks it up and hauls it off to treatment plants or #InjectionWells, where it’s disposed of by being shot back into the earth.
"One day in 2017, Peter pulled up to an injection well in #CambridgeOhio. A worker walked around his truck with a hand-held #radiation detector, he says, and told him he was carrying one of the 'hottest loads' he’d ever seen. It was the first time Peter had heard any mention of the brine being #radioactive.
"The Earth’s crust is in fact peppered with radioactive elements that concentrate deep underground in oil-and-gas-bearing layers. This radioactivity is often pulled to the surface when oil and gas is extracted — carried largely in the brine.
"In the popular imagination, radioactivity conjures images of nuclear meltdowns, but radiation is emitted from many common natural substances, usually presenting a fairly minor risk. Many industry representatives like to say the radioactivity in brine is so insignificant as to be on par with what would be found in a banana or a granite countertop, so when Peter demanded his supervisor tell him what he was being exposed to, his concerns were brushed off; the liquid in his truck was no more radioactive than 'any room of your home,' he was told. But Peter wasn’t so sure.
"'A lot of guys are coming up with #cancer, or sores and skin lesions that take months to heal,' he says. Peter experiences regular headaches and nausea, numbness in his fingertips and face, and 'joint pain like fire.'
"He says he wasn’t given any safety instructions on radioactivity, and while he is required to wear steel-toe boots, safety glasses, a hard hat, and clothes with a flash-resistant coating, he isn’t required to wear a respirator or a dosimeter to measure his radioactivity exposure — and the rest of the uniform hardly offers protection from brine. 'It’s all over your hands, and inside your boots, and on the cuticles of your toes, and any cuts you have — you’re soaked,' he says."

The bomb was dropped by parachute from an aircraft, and detonated at an altitude of 13,000 feet. In 1991, Soviet scientists revealed that the actual yield was 50 Mt (209 PJ).

Time has proved Gofman's points
When a particle decays and spits off some alpha radiation why doesnt it take with it some of the electrons from its parent particle? I would expect the electrons to "stick" to the helium nucleus and travel with it.
I am guessing it is a matter of moment. The alpha particle flys off at such speed the resting moment of the electrons may make it so they cant follow it... but considering that electrons arent at "rest" and that they have very very little mass I question myself on this answer.

"Federal regulators have cited #DominionEnergy for what they say is a substantial safety violation after finding that utility workers failed for 20 years to resolve cracking problems at the company’s #VCSummer nuclear power plant northwest of Columbia.
"This past week, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued what’s known as a preliminary 'yellow’ safety assessment, a measure of how serious an atomic safety problem is considered at a power plant. Yellow assessments are the second most serious on an NRC scale of severity.
"The NRC, which rarely issues yellow findings, said nuclear plant operators did not resolve cracking problems from 2003 to 2022 in V.C. Summer’s diesel generator system, one of the most important backup safety systems at an atomic power plant.
"NRC officials were not available Friday to explain their concerns with the backup diesel generator system, but an Oct. 4 enforcement letter to Dominion nuclear operations president Eric Carr said the utility violated an atomic safety standard that could result in more scrutiny of the power plant.
"'We are considering escalated enforcement for the apparent violation,’ according to the letter signed by LaDonna Suggs, acting director of the NRC’s division of reactor projects.
"That’s no surprise to one nuclear safety advocate. Yellow designations often spark additional investigation and scrutiny of atomic power plants like the one in Fairfield County, said #DavidLochbaum, a former NRC official and expert on the inner workings of nuclear plants.
"'The NRC feels this was avoidable,’ Lochbaum said, when asked why the agency issued a yellow finding. 'There were signs of problems that were overlooked. Because of that, the problem grew to a point where the diesel generator' system did not work during testing.
"'You’re supposed to find and fix problems that occur,’ he said.
"Since 2009, the NRC has issued seven yellow findings against the nation’s nuclear power plants, Lochbaum said, after reviewing agency records. Only a red designation is considered worse, with white and green findings less significant. The United States has nearly 100 nuclear plants.
"The NRC’s determination is not final and is listed as an 'apparent’ violation. Dominion will have an opportunity to explain more about the diesel generator system issues, according to the NRC. Dominion spokesman Darryl Huger said the company 'has implemented a plan to improve the system’s reliability.’
"Huger, in an email to The State, said V.C. Summer has a history of operating safely, maintaining what he said was an 'exemplary’ record. The recent NRC concern centers on a pipe that delivers fuel to one of the power plant’s two emergency diesel generators, he said. Dominion found problems after testing the piping system, according to the NRC.
"Dominion’s backup diesel generator system, like those at other nuclear plants, is designed to provide power to parts of the plant that need electricity in the event power is knocked out during an emergency, such as a storm or earthquake.
"That’s important because power is needed to keep water running through the nuclear reactor core to prevent it from overheating. If power is lost, the nuclear fuel can melt, causing #radiation to be released into the surrounding community.
"In this case, officials at the V.C. Summer plant learned about #cracks in fuel pipes in the facility’s diesel generator system in 2003. Utility workers fixed the initial crack, as well as other cracks four different times in the years after the initial work was done.
"But the NRC says the utility never adequately assessed what could be done to make sure the diesel piping system did not experience more cracking. The most recent cracks were identified in November 2022 during a 24-hour test of the system. Workers found a small leak on one of two diesel generator systems. The leak increased over time and workers discovered a 140-degree crack around a pipe, records show.
"The cracking occurred mostly in the power plant’s 'A' diesel generator system, although one problem occurred in the plant’s 'B' generator system. The plant has two backup diesel generators.
"The cracking that led to the yellow safety finding follows separate, electrical problems with the plant’s diesel generator system in 2022. The NRC said the company, in that case, also failed to promptly resolve problems, issuing a white finding last year. White is lower in safety significant than yellow, but still considered notable.
"Tom Clements, a long-time nuclear safety advocate, said the NRC’s recent yellow safety assessment reveals a violation 'too egregious to ignore.’ He called for a 'severe monetary fine’ against Dominion, which he said ignored preventative maintenance through the years.
"Dominion’s problems are noteworthy in light of the company’s recent request to renew its V.C. Summer operating license another 40 years, Clements said. The power plant, which cranked up operations in the early 1980s, is about 25 miles northwest of Columbia in rural Fairfield County.
"'Hopefully, serious safety problems don’t lurk in other reactor safety systems at the reactor,’ Clements said in an email to The State. 'This incident serves as a wake-up call to fully analyze all such systems prior to a license-renewal determination.’
"The power company, which acquired former V.C. Summer plant owner SCE&G after a failed effort to build two additional reactors at the site, plans to install thicker piping in the generator system, Huger said."

"State officials contributed the millions in taxpayer dollars toward #Holtec International’s effort to get the nuclear plant upgraded and fired back up to provide 800 megawatts of carbon-free, base load power as the energy sector transitions away from fossil fuels. If it happens, it would be the first nuclear plant nationwide to return to generating power after being decommissioned.
"The plant was closed last year when its fuel ran out and the owner sold the facility to Holtec. The new owner has now twice applied for federal money to help get the plant operational again.
"The Biden administration has a $6 billion fund within the U.S. Department of Energy intended to preserve the U.S. nuclear reactor fleet and energy sector jobs.
"[...] Power generation at nuclear plants does not generate greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change, like burning fossil fuels does. Unlike many other lost source incidents (Goiânia Brazil, Tammiku Estonia, Samut Prakarn Thailand, Li Georgia) which are documented in fascinating detail on the IAEA site, there is very little information available on this particular accident.
But they do mention the source had a 1800 R/year dose rate. Interestingly, this works out to 2 mSv/hr which is exactly the same as was quoted for the WA source.
The other day, a friend of mine pointed out that the missing cesium capsule in Western Australia is the same kind of capsule as the one that led to the Kramatorsk incident in Ukraine in the 1980s, in case you wanted context on how absolutely dangerous this tiny thing is.
