As far as the Pullman goes, I've had the opportunity to ride a private railcar attached to an Amtrak train. You betcha some of a story used a lot of those experiences! It even got mentioned a couple of sequels down the line. Having a full course meal prepared in the size of a pantry closet was a course in engineering and ingenuity. Watching the train roll over itself on the Tehachapi Loop was spectacular. Standing on the end of the train, watching the railroad track endlessly endlessly endlessly receding, hearing the wheels click-clattering, seeing the California coast and the blue sea rolling beside you, with no other evidence of people... was breathtaking.
