I will never understand Amtrak's habit of building new "stations" (sometimes literally a bus shelter and a platform), when the original train station is still standing.

In Elyria, OH, using the old station would allow for transfers to Greyhound buses. In Bryan, OH, the old station is literally across the tracks, almost mocking the tiny old Amtrak station. In most cases, the old station is closer to the center of town too.

Today in Labor History September 27, 1903: The Wreck of the Old 97 U.S. railroad disaster occurred on this date. 11 people were killed when the train, traveling from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina derailed and careened off the side of a bridge. It was traveling at excessive speed in an attempt to stay on schedule. The wreck became the subject of a popular ballad covered by The Statler Brothers (feat. Johnny Cash), Charlie Louvin of The Louvin Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Johnny Cash, Hank Snow, Hank Williams III, Patrick Sky, Nine Pound Hammer, Roy Acuff, Boxcar Willie, Lonnie Donegan, and many others.

TNR, the natives remain, appears in the lower right-hand corner.

I've had a copy of this #map of #Ohio from 1895, and I finally found the digital version. You can see that there was once #rail lines to nearly every city and town across the state. The map is a little difficult to read (and compressed a bit by Mastodon), but most of it is there.
However, even this very comprehensive map doesn't show every #railroad line (there's a least two more that don't show up here for some reason), and it doesn't include the interurbans.

#history #histodon #train #trains

A map of the railroads in Ohio published in 1895. The map shows railroad lines, most cities, counties, and the distance from Columbus measured in 25 mile increments. The map was published by the state and prepared under the direction of the Commissioner of Railroads & Telegraphs.
Unfortunately, the comprehensive nature of the map makes it impossible to provide a more detailed text description (it would exceed the character limit and probably take hours).

I love this unauthorized #documentary of the #sfba #BART system, featuring beautiful golden-hour footage from a surreptitiously-attached GoPro on the front of the train, which hitched a ride from SFO to Pittsburg.

The documentary features voices from interesting people from BART’s past and present. I learned a lot about how the system came about, and how it’s run.

The ride is accompanied by the lovely, analog synth-heavy soundtrack of the game Manifold Garden, which invokes an ethereal, futuristic, Blade Runner esthetic as you glide in the first person through tunnels, bridges, and open air, always following the silver tracks ahead.

Kudos to Vincent Woo for this movie. It’s breathtaking. Watch it on your 4K TV.

Today in Labor History July 26, 1894: President Grover Cleveland created a Strike Committee to investigate the causes of the Pullman strike and the subsequent walkout by the American Railway Union, led by Eugene Debs. After four months, the commission absolved the strikers and placed the blame entirely on Pullman and the railroads for the conflict. Roughly 250,000 workers participated in the strike. And an estimated 70 workers died, mostly at the hands of cops and soldiers. To appease workers, the government came up with a new holiday, Labor Day, to commemorate the end of the Pullman Strike. However, President Cleveland had other interests in creating the new holiday. Rather than rewarding workers, his goal was to bury the history of the Haymarket Affair and the radical anarchist and socialist history of the labor movement by choosing any day other than May 1 as the new national labor holiday.

Today in Labor History July 21, 1877: 30,000 Chicago workers rallied on Market Street during the Great Upheaval wave of strikes occurring throughout the country. Future anarchist and Haymarket martyr Albert Parsons spoke to the crowd, advocating the use of the ballot to obtain "state control of the means of production," and urged workers to join the communist Workingmen's Party. Parsons was later abducted by armed men who took him to the police where he was interrogated and informed that he had caused the city great trouble.

The strike wave started in Martinsburg, WV, on July 16, and quickly spread along the railroad lines throughout the country. In Chicago, striking workers from numerous industries took to the streets daily. They shut down the railroads, mills, foundries and many other businesses. They carried banners that said "Life by work, or death by fight". One speaker said, "We must rise up in our might, and fight for our rights. Better a thousand of us be shot down in the streets than ten thousand die of starvation."

On July 26, the protesters threw rocks and fired pistols at the cops, who fired back until they ran out of ammo and were forced them to flee. However, they ran into a detachment of reinforcements and federal troops, sent in by President Hayes. This led to the Battle of the Viaduct, resulting in 15-30 dead strikers and dozens wounded.

In Pittsburgh, 20 striking railroad workers were killed by state troopers during the Great Upheaval. The second book of my “Great Upheaval” trilogy, “Hot Summer in the Smoky City,” takes place in Pittsburgh during the Great Upheaval.

Today in Labor History July 20 1877: In the midst of the Great Upheaval (AKA Great Train Strike), the Maryland state militia fired on striking railroad workers in Baltimore, killing over 20, including children. The strike had started on July 14, in Martinsburg, WV, at the B&O Railroad yards. It quickly spread into Charleston, WV and Baltimore and Cumberland, MD. In Baltimore, as the 5th Regiment marched toward Camden Station with fixed bayonets on their Springfield rifles, crowds attacked them with bricks. Miraculously, no serious injuries occurred. However, when the 6th Regiment began their march, the crowds drove them off with paving stones and fists. Without orders, they began firing at the crowd, killing several. When the two regiments met at Camden Station, the crowds again hurled stones and bricks, disabling locomotives, tearing up tracks and driving off the engineers. They set fire to railroad cars and buildings and cut the firemen’s hoses when they tried to douse the flames.

The Great Upheaval came in the middle of the Long Depression, one of the worst depressions the U.S. has ever faced. My novel, “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” (hopefully out by year’s end) takes place in the years leading up to the Great Strike and is Part I of “The Great Upheaval” trilogy. I am currently working on Book II: “Red Hot Summer in the Smoky City.”

Much of the interior of the mail car is painted green and white, with wood cabinets and flooring.

Today in Labor History July 19, 1877: In the midst of the Great Train Strike of 1877, Pittsburgh workers drove soldiers out of town. Trainmen took control of the railroads in Pittsburgh to protest wage cuts. Two days later, National Guard moved in, killing 20 people.

In 1985, #mining giant Vale opened a railroad that cuts through the Mãe Maria #Indigenous Territory in the Brazilian #Amazon.

Since being built, the #railroad has driven away game, cut off access to important water bodies and disrupted the Indigenous peoples’ way of life by introducing compensation money paid by Vale into the daily life of the villages.

Now, the mining giant has secured permission to build a second railroad track.

I've looked at every #Amtrak station in #Ohio. You simply cannot get on a #train between 8am and 11pm at any #station in the entire state (not that there's a lot of them anyways).

Who planned this?!?! It's no surprise that ridership is an issue when the trains only stop here when most people are asleep. We need some trains that most people can actually utilize.

Street art in the old Donner Summit / Truckee train tunnel / snowsheds. These abandon tunnels and snowsheds are on the original route through the Sierra of the old Transcontinental Railway (1869). The UP recently repurposed the abandon tunnels as a service road. Street art is allowed (kind of a gray area) inside, but prohibited outside of the tunnels / snowsheds.

"Ten years ago, a train exploded in #LacMégantic, killing 47.

It was the deadliest rail accident in North America in nearly a century. A decade later, it’s become another lesson in the slow pace of #safety improvements in the #railroad industry.

An older design of tank cars known as DOT-111s, which ruptured that night in #Quebec, still carry flammable goods in the #US, despite plans by both countries to phase them out."

Despite the overwhelming weight of #government #oppression against #unhoused people that i briefly touched on above, i think we have a pretty good chance of keeping some space to live in this case— it is #railroad land, and the #Minneapolis #ParksAndRecreation employee John or Jon is going out of his way to push the railroad to go along with the city's plans for total elimination.

A little bit of pressure could convince parks to stay in their lane, and #BNSF truly, profoundly, doesn't care.

Lobbying the railroad to displace houseless people is a horrifying use of Parks resources. Morality, empathy, and human decency aside— is it really policy to assist the city in its campaign of incessant displacement until people are forced back onto park land?

Oops. Be glad that it was merely 30 tons of the stuff that was used to blow up the Federal building in Oklahoma City. The article says that they are only guessing where it went - they don't know for sure.

Happy #WaterfallWednesday with a photo I took this morning at #Ohio’s Cataract Falls on Mill Creek in Garfield Heights, near #Cleveland. This #waterfall was actually created in 1905, when workers used picks and shovels to move the waterfall 100 m upstream to make way for a #railroad. Hard to fathom the hubris or the effort. #clevelandmetroparks

Green leafy vegetation frames a 15 m waterfall cascading down a steeply inclined shale slope.

If you talk to a #railroad track inspector who has been doing it for more than a few years, most of them will tell you the same thing: at some point, they found something wrong with the track and had it fixed, preventing a derailment. The cost of that derailment that never happened is more than the wages, benefits, and health insurance costs of that track inspector’s entire career.

Railroads have stated on public record that they don’t believe their workers contribute to profits. #morale

As Rail Profits Soar, Blocked Crossings Force Kids to Crawl Under Trains to Get to School

When crossings are blocked for hours, kids risk their lives to get to school by crawling through trains that could start at any moment.

Ambulances and fire trucks can’t get through. The problem has existed for decades. But it’s getting worse.
