1/ Record drought could keep Amazon dry through 2026
"From killing hundreds of endangered river dolphins -
to threatening the livelihoods of millions of people.

This is the impact of the Amazon #rainforest's historic #drought.

Its sapped the #AmazonRiver and four of its biggest tributaries to their lowest level in at least half a century.

And the worst may be yet to come.

Experts are predicting an even more intense drought next year - due to extreme ocean temperatures worsened by global warming." #climate #Brazil

We've been at our place for almost two years now, and every day it makes me happy that we have our own little sliver of rainforest running along the creek.

I'm not very good at photographing it, but I like how this one turned out.

Burning fossil fuels " left the wet tropics “at a real risk of losing the very things it was made a world heritage area to protect”.

"Queensland’s wet tropics see 25% rise in threatened species in three years as climate change bites. The number of listed threatened species in Australia’s world heritage northern rainforests has increased by 25% since 2020, as ecologists say they are now clearly observing the long-predicted impacts of global heating."

“We also found the (native) bees (Tetragonula hockingsi) had diminished tolerance of heat stress after non-lethal exposure to the insecticides. Even bees exposed to miniscule amounts of insecticide, certainly not enough to kill them, were more susceptible to the effects of heat. The combination of heat stress and insecticide exposure may put this stingless bee at increased risk of decline."

The researchers also found that planting a diverse suite of seedlings, instead of only one species, led in just one decade to greater biomass and forest complexity.

Environmental activists killed at a rate of one every other day in 2022 – report
"#Colombia was the deadliest country and a fifth of the 177 recorded killings took place in the Amazon rainforest, says Global Witness.
At least 177 people were killed last year for defending the environment, according to new figures, with a fifth of killings taking place in the Amazon #rainforest.
Murdered by organised crime groups and land invaders, environmental defenders were killed at a rate of one every other day in 2022, figures from the NGO Global Witness show. Colombia was the most deadly country, recording 60 murders.
#Indigenous communities were disproportionately represented in the figures, making up 34% of all murders, despite representing about 5% of the world’s population. The new figures mean that at least 1,910 environmental defenders have been killed between 2012 and 2022, according to Global Witness, with most of the murders going unpunished.
#Brazil, #Mexico, #Honduras and the #Philippines were the most deadly countries in 2022 after Colombia.
Almost 90% of all killings were recorded in Latin America."

An ancient temperate oak woodland. Your looking at a stream, germs and mosses drape, a cobweb dangles from a tree trunk reflected bridge, the water sparkles with sunlight. Sound on, the water trickles and gurgles. You might feel as though your in a tropical jungle.

The #SequatchieRiver is a 120 mi river that starts on the #CumberlandPlateau at this #cave and flows all the way to my house! This river is responsible for the waterways of #Tennessee s #rainforest and serve the people, plants, and animals that make up our great #biodiversity.

Dye traces have shown that this cave system is fed by North America's largest #sinkhole. Walled on every side, #GrassyCove has valley walls 3k feet high all draining through the #MillCave on #BradyMountain 4/n

Awesome day exploring the #plateau next to #Tennessee s #rainforest

Started off by visiting Cumberland Mountain State Park site of the seven arches bridge and the Cumberland Homesteads Projects of the New Deal era.

This bridge was constructed by men of the Civilian Conservation Corps circa 1935.

This and other projects would see 250 families settled onto the Cumberland Plateau during the height of the Great Depression 1/n

@lishaberzins I found two cool species in our #wetland today! Wait no three!
Autumn Olive, Heartleaf Peppervine, and Passionfruit! I live in a #rainforest in #Tennessee

#Bloomscrolling #plant #ecology #edibles

Passionfruit flowers, a tropical plant is fruiting currently!
Autumn Olive features bright red edible berries with small brown dots. These are edible and full of cartenoids
Heartleaf Peppervine is a member of the grape family and features beautifully diverse berries of Navy blue, royal purple, and magenta, all on the same vine. Unfortunately inedible, but beautiful!

#art #history: river phoenix was born #otd in 1970 & i celebrate his short (but impactful) life by trying to transfer his essence in lines & colour. his prescience was staggering.
i know he'd still be the most badarse plant-eater on earth if he hadn't tangoed with the medicine he used to numb himself to the pain of this world - but at least the costa rican rainforest he bought with his hollywood money is protected still.

quick digital ink portrait i drew of late actor, musician & activist, river phoenix.
he sits with his knees up & his hands clasped in front of him, long hair cascading round his face. a wavy spectrum of colour trails from the left side of his head.
background is a pale peach & there are lilacs, greys, shades of gold, umber, black, yellow, green, orange, violet & red in the composition.

Scientists are baffled after a 10-ton #whale was discovered in the #Amazon #rainforest
A 36-foot-long baby whale was found inland, in a mangrove, more than 50 feet from shore in Brazil -- far from where it should be. A mystery.

For #FernFriday and #ForestFriday here's a nurse log with moss and ferns in the Quinault rainforest on the Olympic peninsula of Washington state, photographed during our PNW road trip in September/October 2022.

I compiled all the different forest impressions we had into a blog post: https://www.alex-kunz.com/nine-forests-ten-photos/

Just got back from a weekend of backpack camping in the rainforest. We got there the first day, stopped to make food before hiking in, and I immediately got stung/bit on my ankle by something. Then my stupid ass decided to hike 6 miles farther from civilization on it.

It was a beautiful hike, and my ankle was about 30% larger by the time we stopped to make camp by the river.

We tried a few dehydrated meals. The Pad Thai was gross, but the chicken dumplings were pretty awesome.

No bears, but we did see a pine marten (?) catch a rat on the trail ahead of us, a grouse of some sort, a few adorable little red/brown squirrels, tiny deer tracks, elk poop, deer poop, bear poop (just outside our tent area), and a lot of other birds. We passed a couple hiking out who said they saw a lynx a little earlier, but it was long gone by the time we got there.

My phone's camera doesn't do the trip justice, but I thought I'd share. I'll attach a few more photos I took for #Mosstodon (just because that hashtag amuses me and I thought of it when I saw all the moss in the rainforest).

These Papuan singers are coming home from a journey. Their voices are absolutely mesmerizing. I wish I could listen to them sing for hours.

Papua is a province of Indonesia, not the well-known Papua New Guinea (though they share a border). It houses 312 tribes who speak over 1,000 languages.

Farmers in eastern Tanzania are regrowing rainforest trees on part of their land.

The farmers receive payments from the sale of carbon credits to supplement their incomes and to compensate them for loss of land and cash crops.

So far, close to 270,000 trees have been planted on 200 hectares (494 acres) of farms located on the flanks of the Nguru Mountains.

Not enough. #Brazil has an army (1.5 million soldiers, including reservists). #Lula should send them in to remove the illegal loggers and liquidate them if necessary. If the #Amazon #rainforest hasn't reached the point of no return yet, it very soon will and there will be global ramifications. The #UN should authorise such a move. #Climate #Biodiversity https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/06/brazil-amazon-deforestation-lula

Catastrophic #climate 'doom loops' could start in just 15 years, new study warns | #LiveScience

"According to the research, more than a fifth of the world's potentially catastrophic #TippingPoints — such as the melting of the #Arctic #permafrost, the collapse of the #Greenland ice sheet and the sudden transformation of the #Amazon #rainforest into savanna — could occur as soon as 2038.
In climatology, a tipping point is the threshold beyond which a localized climate system, or tipping element, irreversibly changes. For instance, if the Greenland ice sheet were to collapse, it would also reduce snowfall in the northern part of the island, making large parts of the sheet irretrievable."
