Man indicted in the murder of Tupac today.
“On Friday, Duane "Keffe D" Davis was indicted by a grand jury in Nevada on one count of murder with a deadly weapon.”

Kurtis Blow released his debut self-titled album
One of the first rap albums. And contrary to the serious look on Blow’s face on the album cover, it’s funky, jazzy, fun album with a festive feel, with several call-and-response tracks that sound like it was made during a house party.
The big hit is “The Breaks”, which was the very first hip-hop certified gold record, and has been sampled by hundreds of bands over the years.
Clap your hands, everybody!

"That “legitimacy” bestowed by #whiteness actually changes the definition of #rap for the #American culture. When the most popular #rappers in the country are #white rappers doing a decent impersonation of black master rappers, what kids see as legitimate rap changes. [...] When these same white rappers are given #Grammys for their attempts, over more talented black rappers, it makes it harder for rap by #black artists to be accepted by mainstream culture—because it sounds different than what they’ve come to know as 'good rap.'"

The SugarHill Gang – Rapper’s Delight (1979)

The Sugarhill Gang released the single "Rapper’s Delight"
To the hip hip hop-a you don't stop! 🕺
Sampling. One of my favorite forms of creative musical expression. And this one is foundational to the technique.
Noted as hip hop’s first mainstream success, the single reached the Top 40 in the U.S. Top 3 in the UK, and #1 in Canada.

British singer / rapper ‘Betty Boo’ released her debut album, “Boo Mania”
Betty Boo was a sexy, sassy pop star who also studied sound engineering before her music career took off.
Her style is fun and lighthearted with no pretense of being a hardcore rapper.
Anyone remember the “hip/house” sound? It was like halfway between pop and rap. Up tempo, dance orientated pop and rap with some house influences, plus samples and loops. This is it right here 👇
The singles from this album got played a lot in clubs and at parties. It was really popular at the time.
My latest list covers the Best Rap Singles of 2002, a year led by Missy Elliott, dominated by the Neptunes, haunted by 9/11, and finished by Dipset and 50 Cent.

The Skinny Boys - “Jock Box” (1986)
My friend had this on a mixtape (cassette) so we’d hear it often while hanging out. For us, at the time, it was more a novelty tune, inspired by The Fat Boys' member Human Beat Box.
From their debut LP, “Weightless”, which I’ve since found to have a bunch of cool tracks with that classic 80s rap sound.
Of course, if you’ve seen the show “Workaholics”, you’ve heard this during the opening and closing credits.

Naughty By Nature released their second album, “Naughty By Nature”
It’s self-titled because their first album was under a different band name, “The New Style”
The album is impressive in that it’s both a hiphop and pop classic, the latter due to the smash hit “O.P.P.”, an infectious mix of hard rhymes and east coast beats that poses the age old question, are you down with other people’s parts / partners?
They were called DJ Mike Wiffwaff and Sven or something. And it was so fucking lousy.
I've always loathed the casual kind of rap, like, Hey! Rap's really easy! sort of thing. I mean, it really displays its cultural appropriation. It's just an embarrassment.
Dutch hiphop master Joa Gymshoe's "Collabs" collection is a max sized serving of fire #rap and #hiphop
Not surprising given the title, each track is a collab between Joa and another artist or beatmaker, many of whom are STBBForever regulars.
Varied style stuff here, but all ill vibes.

Still listening to the new Billy Woods album (Maps - see above post this is attached to). It's SO damn good. Easily one of the best hiphop albums I've ever heard, and I'm not kidding. And I've heard a LOT of hiphop in my life. Billy's such a talent.
There's definitely some Public Enemy vibes in there, but also maybe like.. Kendrick? It's probably gonna end up my overall AOTY. It's INSANELY good. The whole album flows so well, all kinds of stuff on there- even some jazz. Ever hear some KILLER rapping over jazz? Well, it's on here.

50 years ago today, DJ Kool Herc (aka Clive Campbell) put on a "back-to-school jam" in the rec room of an apartment block in the West Bronx. Entrance cost 25c for "ladies" and 50c for "fellas." Herc took the chance to show off a technique he'd developed where he switched between copies of the same record to extend drum breaks, talking over the music at the same time, and hip-hop was born. Here's a look at how that moment created a culture.

it's bandcamp friday and i'm thrilled to share my latest song!
this less topical, yet lyrically denser offering, showcases my more intense style over an equally high-energy beat! 👊💥
"let me break it down to raw steps
i traded my halo for barbed wire
then strenghtened my straw flesh
now dressed in war paint and armor
i feel ready for any and all threats
yet, honestly, the ironic thing
i barely wanna leave my small desk
i'm comfortable, my air's conditioned
i don't really have the spare attention
i learned to steer clear from flares of tension
now i look inside for the clearest vision
i'm not tryin' to be in a mirror position
then compare what's missin' when we share our missions
i'm just me if you care to listen
or are you here for the beer and chicken?"

Beastie Boys release their second album, “Paul’s Boutique”
Before this, I was lukewarm on the Beastie Boys. Some of the songs on their first album had some pretty cool rock samples, but for the most part I found them mostly annoying purveyors of jock rap.
That all changed almost immediately the day Paul’s Boutique dropped. I was in college, a radio dj, and working at a record store. Perfect timing. We’d play this album constantly in the store, and over a great sound system, so I got familiar with it quickly.
Groundbreaking use of samples, clever lyrics, and some really cool beats thanks to their new production partners, The Dust Brothers. I was so glad they remastered this back in 2009.
When did you first hear this album? How do you compare it to their other albums?
Is there a #rap/#hiphop #podcast that breaks down songs or albums? Would love to hear some analysis. Some examples of other podcasts in this vein would be switched on pop (focuses on current pop which can overlap with hip hop), strong songs (focuses on pop of all times and jazz), or sticky notes (all classical)
My musical journey over the years has taken me through more than a few genres, but metal has long been my home. Here's my primary journey. Overlap happens of course, and I never abandoned any of these genres, my focus just shifted
Rock (mostly Linkin Park) -> groove metal -> death metal -> nu metal -> black metal -> folk metal -> melodeath -> aggrotech -> industrial-> horrorcore -> rap -> darkwave -> blackened deathcore -> 2nd wave deathcore (both melodic and technical)
I usually sum up my tastes as "black clothes music"
Lamb of God
Shadow of Intent
Brand of sacrifice

#Radio Irrtum! is my German language #radioShow exploring the sonic vastnesses of the #underground. Don't be afraid about that German language aspect - it's a show to raise your attention for new unheard #music all over the genre spectrum - and exactly this music is what has priority above all other things; so if you don't speak German at all, you’ll still be sonically pleasured! :)
This time there will be literally a meeting of sheer lots of different musical styles, all insanely cramped into one wretched hour of air time.
That means in particular:
- melancholic UK #pop
- finest UK #Rap
- bloody #Techno (seriously, and I will dissociate myself by showing yøu what shitshow became of it by practical examples ;) )
- #Bass, Halftime, 140 whatever (as always)
- #Berlin electro #PostWave
- #ContemporaryClassic formed by stylistic devices of #MusiqueConcrete
- lots of #alternative #Indie
- pure cold #Hardcore
- phenomenal #emo #punk’y punchy #antifascist #powerviolence from #Dortmund (and it’s #CreativeCommons too!)
- Goth Spaghetti #Western
As always I'll post the playlist after the show here (provided I’m at home, else it will come up the day after). And if you have questions about the music – I'll gladly answer! Just ask!

- Post Wave (AUUUUS Berlin!)
