One of the first rap albums. And contrary to the serious look on Blow’s face on the album cover, it’s funky, jazzy, fun album with a festive feel, with several call-and-response tracks that sound like it was made during a house party.
The big hit is “The Breaks”, which was the very first hip-hop certified gold record, and has been sampled by hundreds of bands over the years.

Conservez le nom de l'entreprise et la date de réception de la pub fâcheuse.

Still listening to the new Billy Woods album (Maps - see above post this is attached to). It's SO damn good. Easily one of the best hiphop albums I've ever heard, and I'm not kidding. And I've heard a LOT of hiphop in my life. Billy's such a talent.

Before this, I was lukewarm on the Beastie Boys. Some of the songs on their first album had some pretty cool rock samples, but for the most part I found them mostly annoying purveyors of jock rap.
That all changed almost immediately the day Paul’s Boutique dropped. I was in college, a radio dj, and working at a record store. Perfect timing. We’d play this album constantly in the store, and over a great sound system, so I got familiar with it quickly.
Groundbreaking use of samples, clever lyrics, and some really cool beats thanks to their new production partners, The Dust Brothers. I was so glad they remastered this back in 2009.
When did you first hear this album? How do you compare it to their other albums?
Is there a #rap/#hiphop #podcast that breaks down songs or albums? Would love to hear some analysis. Some examples of other podcasts in this vein would be switched on pop (focuses on current pop which can overlap with hip hop), strong songs (focuses on pop of all times and jazz), or sticky notes (all classical)
My musical journey over the years has taken me through more than a few genres, but metal has long been my home. Here's my primary journey. Overlap happens of course, and I never abandoned any of these genres, my focus just shifted
Rock (mostly Linkin Park) -> groove metal -> death metal -> nu metal -> black metal -> folk metal -> melodeath -> aggrotech -> industrial-> horrorcore -> rap -> darkwave -> blackened deathcore -> 2nd wave deathcore (both melodic and technical)
I usually sum up my tastes as "black clothes music"
