This afternoon the blue jays that like to hang around were raising a ruckus in the trees in the back. I went to the window to see what was going on and a huge hawk flew out of the trees right towards me. However, because our yard has a continuous 15 deg slope from front to back, the hawk was below my field of view as it passed by the window. I've never seen a flying hawk from above before and it was wonderful. #birds #illinois #raptor #amazed
One of the local eagles doing a little fly-by last Thursday. Only a couple months to go before the migratory eagles head this way. Two years ago there were a lot of migrants. A year later there were hardly any. Last year there were the most I've ever seen. Hoping we'll have a bunch this year.

I spent yesterday afternoon scouting for fall color changes between Coal Bank and Molas Pass. There was not much, but the beauty of the San Juans was present, as always. And to top off the day, this red-tailed hawk appeared as I was packing up.
Booster 7 and 9 have several significant differences, starting with the changeover from Raptor 2 to Raptor 2.1, which uses electric #TVC (Thrust Vector Control). A possible reason why #SpaceX has an issue with #methane leakage compared to other #rockets could be the high #pressure that #Raptor operates at in its Methane turbopumps, hot gas manifold, and the Main Combustion Chamber (MCC). One of the most obvious changes to Booster 9 was the addition of a hot stage vent ring on the top that will allow SpaceX to fire 🔥 the ship’s engines while still attached to the booster. https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2023/09/starship-upgrades-upcoming-test-flight/

See you soon :D
Heading into the 3rd week of September is the peak of #autumn #migration in the US for #BroadWingedHawk. I found two on my morning walk here in #Stillwater, #Oklahoma, but also kinda got attacked by a couple of unleashed dogs. (They got confused when I ignored them and never actually bit me, but they could've easily been hit by cars on the busy road they dashed across to get to me.)

Cooper's Hawk (juvenile) is a crow-sized Accipiter hawk adapted to moving through forests in pursuit of songbirds. It's reappearance in this park coincides with the onset of migration. These raptors have adapted to suburban and urban settings, aided by an abundance of bird feeders, which I call "Cooper's buffet."
A Merlin, basking in the sun on an otherwise chilly day last February. The Merlin is a small falcon that specializes in aerial pursuit or surprise capture of avian prey.
Breeding in boreal forests in North America and Eurasia, many migrate, but residents remain in middle and northern latitudes year-round. Merlins are widespread, but uncommon, and have adapted to suburban and urban settings.
As many of us do, until I became interested in birding, I tended to lump all raptors together and assumed common ancestry for the entire group. As a phylogeneticist, it interested me to learn that falcons (Falconiformes) are more closely related to songbirds and parrots than they are to hawks and vultures (Accipitrimorphae), which share common ancestry with owls and woodpeckers.

Good Evening, ‘Tura’ the stunning Siberian Eagle Owl at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary just wanted to say ‘Hi’ and show you her impressive wingspan and flexibility…….6 hrs in the gym everyday, Aerobics and weights, that is impressive. 😉📸🦉 #owls #owl #raptor #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdphotography #nikon #nikonphotography
A beautiful young Coopers Hawk, Accipiter Cooperii, perched on a branch, in hunting mode, in my backyard Spruce Tree with the snow gently falling, is searching for easy prey. The Coopers Hawk is territorial and my backyard seems to be part of its territory as it always seems to be in it. Wall art available with #FreeShipping

Good morning, Flying into Tuesday with 'Smokey', one of the Great Grey Owls at Suffolk Owl Sanctuary. Sorry about the black mark to the top right of the photograph. This is what happens when an inconsiderate family turn up late and park their push chair directly in my eyeline... oh some people... 🙄
Have a great day. 🦉📸

The Plush Raptor skin for Guild Wars 2 was suuuuuuper fun to make. I looked up all sorts of patterns and materials and colours to use to try and maximize the cuteness and make it look very handmade.
Unfortunately, I can't show all the early experiments, but they were all so cute
A friend of mine is a lucky-ducky in that he has a large number of #raptors that hang out in his neighborhood. Mostly red-tailed #hawks but in this case a juvenile Cooper's hawk hanging out in the tree across the street. This guy/gal was likely recently kicked out of the nest b/c it kept calling for its next meal with no success.
This Merlin Falcon was calling for some time while perched in the Spruce tree in Guelph Ontario Canada. It finally decided to take off which meant the small birds could return. They are small with heavily streaked plumage and look too small to do much damage but they are fierce and energetic birds of prey.

»Wellpappus Raptor« - Eigentlich war alles wie immer. Ich nahm das Paket entgegen, unterschrieb. Danke. Bitte. Ich öffnete es im Kochlabor mit einem Messer. Und plötzlich sprang er mir entgegen. Entschlossen. Kraftvoll. Wellpappus Raptor. The Only.
A front view of a red shouldered hawk that was not bothered by my presence on the greenway.
It let me observe and take pictures of it while hunting for prey.
This #LongEaredOwl had no interest in the brave little Black Capped Chickadee that perched beside it on the branch in the tree in my backyard!

Not this morning.
I wanted to post a photo from this morning. I saw a broad winged hawk and a chimney swift and took a bunch of pictures, but ISO too high, the hawk was too far away, and the chimney swift was small and moving fast. So, all the photos were really bad. But here's a broad winged hawk I took on another day. I don't have a photo of a chimney swift and am quite disappointed that I messed up the shoot. Live and learn.
There we were, hunkered down at my patio table in the backyard watching the sky. When two mystery birds appeared high up riding the thermals. They were Mississippi Kites (Ictinia mississippiensis). This is a new bird for me, I'd not heard of it until today.
"The Mississippi Kite makes a streamlined silhouette as it careens through the sky on the hunt for small prey, or dive-bombs intruders that come too close to its nest tree. These sleek, pearly gray raptors often hunt together and nest colonially in stands of trees, from windbreaks on southern prairies to old-growth bottomlands in the Southeast (and even on city parks and golf courses). After rearing their chicks they fly all the way to central South America for the winter." - allaboutbirds.org
Backyard birds hide.
This red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) was flying over checking out the backyard birds. The hawk hid among the vultures - quite clever. I found a puff of feathers in the yard not long before taking this photograph.
"This is probably the most common hawk in North America. If you’ve got sharp eyes you’ll see several individuals on almost any long car ride, anywhere. Red-tailed Hawks soar above open fields, slowly turning circles on their broad, rounded wings. Other times you’ll see them atop telephone poles, eyes fixed on the ground to catch the movements of a vole or a rabbit, or simply waiting out cold weather before climbing a thermal updraft into the sky." - allaboutbirds.org
I used to often see this #owl perched just off a trail surrounded by alder trees by a horse pasture. Such a beauty...
Oh, my, the adorableness...
Confession: I think I got too attached to this little one for the past weeks. Made me really sad when the first hatched died, so I kept checking to make sure this one was still alive.
Almost heart broken.
Yesterday afternoon, I was sitting with my wife on the front porch of her little quilting shop. We have a couple old redwood rocking chairs. Ben and Charlie were laying on the porch watching the neighborhood.
I was fooling with my phone, I had taken a photo of some clouds and was typing in a caption, when two red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) appeared flying by right in front of me. I fumbled my phone and grabbed at my camera, but managed only this one shot, which would be a great shot if the right wing was in the frame 😢. I got a couple more pictures, but the hawks were flying away by that time ... it's just not the same.
Another photo from this morning`'s catch.
This black vulture (Coragyps atratus) flew over this morning while I was drinking coffee. I'm pretty sure there are some congregating nearby in the forest. The same with turkey vultures. I see them in the morning lifting up from the forest to rise into the sky.
This is a northern harrier. I took this photograph a couple months ago at Holly Beach, Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico.
This isn't a great photo, especially cropped as far in as is this one. But you can get a pretty look at the bird even if it doesn't have the detail and texture a better photo would show.
"The Northern Harrier is distinctive from a long distance away: a slim, long-tailed hawk gliding low over a marsh or grassland, holding its wings in a V-shape and sporting a white patch at the base of its tail. Up close it has an owlish face that helps it hear mice and voles beneath the vegetation. Each gray-and-white male may mate with several females, which are larger and brown. These unusual raptors have a broad distribution across North America." - allaboutbirds.org
In the woods.
This cooper's hawk was around a while back and I had the opportunity to get several photographs. This one was just inside the wooded area behind my property.
"Life is tricky for male Cooper’s Hawks. As in most hawks, males are significantly smaller than their mates. The danger is that female Cooper’s Hawks specialize in eating medium-sized birds. Males tend to be submissive to females and to listen out for reassuring call notes the females make when they’re willing to be approached. Males build the nest, then provide nearly all the food to females and young over the next 90 days before the young fledge." - allaboutbirds.org
