Last time I did cross platform mobile dev I was using jdk 11. Today I just installed jdk 17 to get the latest toolchain up an running.
Currently I am:
- relearning c++ after 20 years
- relearning react native after (?) years
- learning rust
- security reviewing some php code
- security reviewing a mysql setup
I hope it pays off in the end.

It would be so nice to have a basic microblog plugin/app that turned your WordPress site into a microblog using a custom post type. I haven't tried because I don't know how to make mobile apps.
Also, I've said "I wish I knew how to make mobile apps" one time too many. Perhaps this winter will be the time I finally learn React Native.

What should I teach myself over the next week or so, #AngularJS, #ReactNative, or #Flutter?
I'm really on the fence about this.. Should I make my Mastodon app in #ReactNative or #Flutter? Good #accessibility support is a definite must, and I want it to feel as much like a native platform app as possible.
I'm leaning toward flutter because the tooling is nicer, but I'm scared I won't have the community or library support that I would if I went with React Native.
What are your #CrossPlatform #AppDev opinions, Mastodon?

@alastor8472 I have developed 3 apps for clients using #reactnative totaling >250.000 users. And I get your sentiment and had similar thoughts in the last months. Cross platform is no free lunch with #reactnative and benefits highly depend on type of application, user group, number of dependencies/libs. Evaluating those apps today I would have probably opted for true native for at least two of those apps.
After spending multiple days with #ReactNative, #TypeScript (or #JavaScript) still makes my Swift eyes bleed and my compiler heart ache.
I feel that I really miss out on IDE and compiler feedback to write code faster (and less error prone), while also greatly assisting with debugging any issues.
I think I would always prefer other languages over this. Even the Java-like #Dart from #Flutter. I think coding twice in #Kotlin and #Swift would probably be faster for me π

Iβm finally getting the chance to upgrade to #reactnative #expo SDK 48. Massive improvement in startup performance, especially on Android where we have startup IO issues.
I migrated a few FlatList usages to FlashList and am blown away by the improvement. Even on a Pixel 4a I canβt scroll fast enough to cause it to miss a render.
Even though I'm working with some libraries that haven't fully stabilised yet, the developer experience making a Rust fullstack webapp is sooooo much nicer than working with React Native.
Like, with React Native, I came across library bugs a lot. I had never heard of npx patch-package before working with React Native, but had to use it several times to fix library bugs there ...
So far I've not yet come across any library bugs in any of the Rust libraries I've used. There have been times where I thought it was a library bug, but then after some research found out it was actually a bug on my end.
React Native's error messages ... oh boi ... can you even call them messages? They're as useless as can be. It's like saying "hey, an error happened, have fun" but in the most cryptic way possible. None of the error messages I came across had any relevance to the actual error.
Well, if you've ever worked with Rust, you probably know that its error messages are generally pretty good. Today I also found out I could make the Axum error messages good too by using a macro. Sure, it's not always straight-forward, but that mostly comes down to learning to parse the error messages rather than the error messages being bad.
That said, Rust's long compiletimes does detract some points. But at the same time, as you get more familiar with the language, you start spending more time writing code and less time verifying your code. And well, the compile times have been overcomable.
First attempt of #ReactNative #Expo is going well... Can't work out how to make the app bar not intersect with the status bar. Maybe I need to learn raw React Native first?
