Teacher, author and scholar, Jose Luis Vilson offers some thoughts about what isn’t being discussed in the current round of reading debates. https://networkforpubliceducation.org/blog-content/jose-luis-vilson-the-problem-with-how-you-discuss-reading/ #Reading
I #read Fang by Demelza Carlton (#book 1/Nyx Colony). Downloaded it because it was #free (not KU, free). It’s got to be the most ridiculous thing I’ve finished in a long time, with both MCs being naive beyond belief. There is a HEA. I can’t imagine paying for the other #books in the series. If you’re looking for a Vampire, alien, blackmail, dentist, forced pregnancy, billionaire #romance mashed into 200 pages, this is for you! #reading #books #romancelandia #romancebooks
'Like a man trying to push a heavy load up a hill, Yechiel-Nachman sweated and panted as he prayed.'
Etgar Keret responds to turmoil in the Middle East with a short story, Intention, translated by @JessicaHebrew in today's Observer:
Keira Amherst had everything--until she didn't go along with her evil father's plans. Locked up in her bedroom for years, she had lost all hope, but one day she got her chance to escape...
This is a complete stand alone story with suspense, military action, and an "open door" romance. The story may deal with serious topics but is fast-paced and has an HEA.

As winter sets in and people try to keep warm, nothing beats getting under a thick blanket and curling up on the sofa with a good book.

Dragons in a unique fantasy (even the dragons are different). Epic fantasy from a personal viewpoint.
The four-book series is complete. It ends 👍
Check out the review shown on my profile page:
Read in leapfrog with no.s 41-44 the 45th of my #BooksReadIn2023 could’ve been a (fairly short) article - but the author wanted to write a popular history book, so quickly rehashed most of post-Roman history through to the Conquest, which wasn’t news to me. Not an awful case for his preferred location for Brunanburh, but not hugely groundbreaking or 100% compelling. Not entirely sure why I persevered to the end.
Today in Labor History December 2, 1867: British author Charles Dickens gave his first public reading in the United States at Tremont Temple in Boston. He described his impressions of the U.S. in a travelogue, “American Notes for General Circulation.” In Notes, he condemned slavery and correlated the emancipation of the poor in England with the abolition of slavery abroad. Despite his abolitionist sentiments, some modern commentators have criticized him for not condemning Britain’s harsh crackdown during the 1860s Morant Bay rebellion in Jamaica. During his American visit, he also spent a month in New York, giving lectures, and arguing for international copyright laws and against the pirating of his work in America. The press ridiculed him, saying he should be grateful for his popularity here.
44th of my #BooksReadIn2023 - a dystopian fantasy trilogy. I liked that they were small stories of people looking out for themselves, or indeed a complete stranger, rather than to Save The World as is so often the case. Though it ends with the big bad thing being solved, I appreciated it not being a stereotypical Villain behind it all.
#ColonialViolence in #Scandinavia countries and the religious and economic war on #Indigenous #Sami populations are the stories of such #books as Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius, The End of Drum-Time by Hanna Pylväinen, and Forty Days Without Shadow by Olivier Truc. I just finished #reading Truc's book. Like the Americas, #Australia and everywhere else subjected to #colonialism, the #racism, #misogyny and #greed all look the same and have same outcomes.

Read *Blood Sisters* by Vanessa Lillie: Important and page-turning mystery by enrolled Cherokee woman that depicts plight of #MMIWG2S (missing & murdered #indigenous women, girls, & two spirit people).
I just finished the novel and will add it to my recommended reads.
(I'd recommend even if Vanessa weren't in one of my writing groups! )
You have an affliction. A malady. Everything in the world, all its equipment and armaments, its slings and arrows, its sticks and stones, its words that always hurt you, that break your heart and your bones. Osteogenesis imperfecta. All your inner structures turn brittle, little, and weak.
Five stars: How Spider Saved Halloween by Robert Kraus (1973) was published the year I was born. I think I had it read to me way back when. I came across it again via social media — Instagram, I think. As it was coming up on Halloween, I though it was a good time to read or re-read it.

Imagine you're reading a fiction book by your favourite contemporary author.
It comes with a "director's commentary" - where the writer gives you an insight into the creative process, the themes they've developed, and what they had to cut etc.
How would you prefer to read such a commentary?

There are three books I'm reading at the moment and all have drawn me in in their different ways:
* Botticelli's Secret by Joseph Luzzi - an account of the commission the artist Sandro Botticelli was given by a member of Florence's powerful Medici family to illustrate all hundred cantos of Dante's Divine Comedy
* The Housekeepers by Alex Hay - a terrific revenge heist story pitting downstairs vs upstairs masterminded by a former housekeeper of a grand London Mayfair house who has a hidden agenda
* Into the Forest - an anthology of retellings of Baba Yaga stories by a wide range of horror and fantasy writers
You put yourself together. Bit by bit. Part Sometimes you do it with clarity and precision. As if by a manual. As if provided with a step-by-step guide. At other times, in total darkness. In the midnight hour. Grappling with esoteric secrets. With hieroglyphics. An impenetrable mystery. Like Ikea instructions for building anything...
“My Kissinger Obit for ‘Rolling Stone’” by Spencer Ackerman
ICYMI: In this recent blog post, I talk about my upcoming book, "The Spiral and The Threads" and how it "completes" The Nod/Wells Timelines. Give it a read!
My Christmas reading begins NOW. I've just started A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens for the first time. (I had to read Hard Times at secondary school and that really put me off him, it was ghastly.) This wee illustrated book I have here is musty-smelling and old and used to belong to my mother, so I'll keep it for that reason alone, even if the book ends up sucking. #reading #books #bookstodon

Five stars: Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune (2021) is a slow, quiet, melancholy and sometimes funny look at life and death. Wallace dies unexpectedly, the day after firing a woman who desperately needs her job. Wallace, though, now has to contend with attending his own funeral and being stuck in a teashop with a reaper (Mei), a ferryman (Hugo), a ghost (Nelson), and a dog (Apollo).

Genres will include: #litfic, #horror, #histfic, #fantasy as well as a bit of #satire and #crime. 🥰

Huh. It just occurred to me that not everyone reads all the time. Like, there’s a bunch of people without books they’re reading right now. That concept is so bizarre to me. I’ve always got several books going. Ebooks, audiobooks and physical copies of books. If you don’t read anymore, when and why did you stop? No judgement. I’m genuinely curious. @bookstodon #bookstodon #books #reading #amreading
I've recently started reading regularly and rather than it helping my TBR it seems to be making it worse.
Nonfiction books cite other nonfiction books a lot as a source and of course I need to add all of the books mentioned to my TBR. 😆
I've downloaded four samples on Apple Books in the last few days since I've started reading regularly. 😂 So my TBR has expanded by a lot.
"The unbearable hubris of Musk and the billionaire tech bros.
Challenging each other to cage fights, building apocalypse bunkers – the behaviour of today’s mega-moguls is becoming increasingly outlandish and imperial."
After finishing the 9th book in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache cozy Quebec murder mystery series, it was time to get back to my roots… #SCIFI!!!
Only 4% in but off to a super interesting good start!
🧵 1/5 Perhaps you know this feeling: unpleasant current events come thick and fast, #doom & #gloom & #ecogrief can almost paralyse us. What's really good then: immersing yourself in #deepTime, shifting perspectives. What was it like on this #planet between the ice ages and the greenhouses? Why was the #earth never empty even when it looked desolate? And how does #evolution work?
Apparently my replacement for not watching YouTube is reading nonfiction books, which I'm not complaining about. 😄
I'm getting so much reading done and discovering books I haven't heard of ever since my YouTube watch time has gone way down.
