This is a complete stand alone story with suspense, military action, and an "open door" romance. The story may deal with serious topics but is fast-paced and has an HEA.

Picture is black and white and of a young, brunette woman, looking down at the bottom right hand corner of the picture. At the top left corner, the title of the book, Dark Prison, is written in contrasting green text. At the bottom, the following excerpt from the book is written:

"We don't have time for this," John told her, his voice full of urgency. "I'm getting you out of here. Tonight."

Keira's heart felt like it had jumped up in her chest. Her knees felt weak. Was she hearing this correctly? She had dreamed of getting out of this hell for so long that she didn't think it was possible."

2 out of 5 stars.

Pride, Prejudice and Witches is not like the usual Pride and Prejudice variation. The cardinal rule of those variations is broken in this book. I don't wish to be more specific and spoil it for others. I could not get into this book, and found it confusing at times. The confusion may be my fault, as I kept expecting it to more closely follow P&P. If you like books with witches, and are not a devoted Pride and Prejudice fan, this may be better appreciated by you.

The "biscuit" joke from So Long and Thanks for all the Fish by Douglas Adams is now one of my favourite jokes from the series

1/3 "‘He did this. He leaned across the table, picked up the packet of biscuits, tore it open, took one out, and . . .’
‘What?’
‘Ate it.’
‘What?’
‘He ate it.’
Fenchurch looked at him in astonishment. ‘What on earth did you do?’
‘Well, in the circumstances I did what any red-blooded Englishman would do. I was compelled,’ said Arthur, ‘to ignore it.’"
2/3 "‘I went into the breach again. I took,’ said Arthur, ‘another biscuit. And for an instant our eyes met.’
‘Like this?’
‘Yes, well, no, not quite like that. But they met. Just for an instant. And we both looked away. But I am here to tell you,’ said Arthur, ‘that there was a little electricity in the air. There was a little tension building up over the table. At about this time.’
‘I can imagine.’
‘We went through the whole packet like this. Him, me, him, me . . .’"
3/3 "‘There is that. So. When the empty packet was lying dead between us the man at last got up, having done his worst, and left. I heaved a sigh of relief, of course. As it happened, my train was announced a moment or two later, so I finished my coffee, stood up, picked up the newspaper, and underneath the newspaper . . .’
‘Yes?’
‘Were my biscuits.’
‘What?’ said Fenchurch. ‘What?’
‘True.’"--extracts from So Long and Thanks for all the Fish by Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series).

Read in leapfrog with no.s 41-44 the 45th of my #BooksReadIn2023 could’ve been a (fairly short) article - but the author wanted to write a popular history book, so quickly rehashed most of post-Roman history through to the Conquest, which wasn’t news to me. Not an awful case for his preferred location for Brunanburh, but not hugely groundbreaking or 100% compelling. Not entirely sure why I persevered to the end.

Today in Labor History December 2, 1867: British author Charles Dickens gave his first public reading in the United States at Tremont Temple in Boston. He described his impressions of the U.S. in a travelogue, “American Notes for General Circulation.” In Notes, he condemned slavery and correlated the emancipation of the poor in England with the abolition of slavery abroad. Despite his abolitionist sentiments, some modern commentators have criticized him for not condemning Britain’s harsh crackdown during the 1860s Morant Bay rebellion in Jamaica. During his American visit, he also spent a month in New York, giving lectures, and arguing for international copyright laws and against the pirating of his work in America. The press ridiculed him, saying he should be grateful for his popularity here.

44th of my #BooksReadIn2023 - a dystopian fantasy trilogy. I liked that they were small stories of people looking out for themselves, or indeed a complete stranger, rather than to Save The World as is so often the case. Though it ends with the big bad thing being solved, I appreciated it not being a stereotypical Villain behind it all.

Title: Henry Kissinger, War Criminal Beloved by America’s Ruling Class, Finally Dies
Author: Spencer Ackerman
Source: Rolling Stone (29 Nov 2023)
Highlight: The international architecture that the U.S. and its allies established after World War II, shorthanded today as the “rules-based international order,” somehow never gets around to applying the same pressure on a hegemonic United States as it applies to U.S.-hostile or defiant powers. It reflects the organizing principle of American exceptionalism: America acts; it is not acted upon. Henry Kissinger was a supreme architect of the rules-based international order.

"We live in strange times.
We also live in strange places: each in a universe of our own. The people with whom we populate our universes are the shadows of whole other universes intersecting with our own. Being able to glance out into this bewildering complexity of infinite recursion and say things like, ‘Oh, hi, Ed! Nice tan. How’s Carol?’ involves a great deal of filtering skill for which all conscious entities have eventually to develop a capacity in order to protect themselves from the contemplation of the chaos through which they seethe and tumble. Huh. It just occurred to me that not everyone reads all the time. Like, there’s a bunch of people without books they’re reading right now. That concept is so bizarre to me.
