"The Striding Place" (1896)
by Gertrude Atherton
While hunting in Yorkshire, Weigall's friend, Wyatt Gifford, goes missing near the 'Strid, a treacherous section of the River Wharfe.
A protege of Ambrose Bierce, Atherton found inspiration in her own visit to the 'Strid, and in a pair of poems, "The Force of Prayer" and "The Boy of Egremond," about a twelfth-century tragedy at that spot.
And now you know something new. Old, but new.

Out of all the books in my shelves, I knew right where to find Shirley Jackson's Haunting of Hill House. I'm almost through watching the Netflix series so now I may go back and read the book. Are you reading anything scary, horrific, fantastical? I am also reading Eve Bunting's Ghost Children and even though it's for middle readers, I'm scared. 😬 #Reading #Books #Horror
Pleasant but weird dreams last night. Rainy day meant I managed a sleep in for last day of holidays. Today’s plans: finish my book, lunch with mum and my brother, maybe work on some terrariums that are getting a bit overgrown this afternoon. #holiday #reading #terrarium

“The transition from a culture of the written word to a culture of images hinders what experts refer to as ‘deep literacy’. Digital leisure spares us from the slow, introspective solitude of #reading #TheGreatestBooks. […] Only #books of considerable substance imbue us with a detailed understanding of various subjects while enabling a dialogue with the past. […] That’s precisely what the great books offer. And ‘great books’ often happens to coincide with, well, ‘hefty books’. In return, they demand solitude, immobility, and no company other than combinations of letters arranged in horizontal lines, carefully stacked into paragraphs. Are we still capable of the level of concentration required for deep reading? […] We exaggerate the artistic merits of television series to mask a shameful and growing ineptitude for engaging with substantial literary works.”

The Gifts by Liz Hyder
I've not got a whole heap to say about this. It was fine. I think my main issue was that there was a host of characters and no one to really latch on to. And they all seemed alike in personality so that often only the context of the scene informed me who was involved. And it didn't explore the wider mystery of the premise. But yeah. It was fine.

Yesterday, I began reading the book The Apple II Age.
A couple chapters in, and so far, I'm really liking the detailed look of what went into mainstream computing, and how it went from mainly military application to consumer level, in great detail. I can't wait to dig deeper into it.
And I love the pixelated cover.

#Reading #recommendation... I'm just finishing up reading Marin Gurii's "The Revolt of the Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium" (2014). It is absolutely #prescient.
It contains the best description of North America's current #political climate that I've seen; he clearly saw, writing a decade ago, exactly how toxic our collective #dialectic would get.
And more importantly, he saw the #danger it represented to our very democracies.

It's nearly summertime and Cattail island is abuzz with the anticipated birth of a mustang foal. Unfortunately that's overshadowed by a body found in the local dojo.

I spent yesterday cleaning up weeds and pine needles to get the Little Free Library looking good. I think it paid off - it looks much better than before 😄 So, now that it's not such a mess, here's a picture of the whole kit and caboodle!

Happy Pride Month! 💗 🌈 This is my first year celebrating pride identifying as Bisexual.
I am reading "Bi - the hidden culture, history, and science of bisexuality" by Julia Shaw and it is such an informative treat. I love learning more about the queer community. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about bisexuality and queer history.
I would love to try writing a blog post today to talk about this book, my personal journey of self discovery, and my wonderful experience of getting to meet my long distance boyfriend last week 💗 Let's see if my hands are up for it
Wishing everyone a wonderful June! 💗 🌈
To celebrate #Pride even further, I am #reading MANHUNT by Gretchen Felker-Martin this month, a book in which trans people must hunt cis men for their vital organs in a post-apocalyptic America where oestrogen has become a commodity.

So I've decided to read the SF Masterworks series, which starts off with Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War". Not a great start. Its weird and stereotypical depiction of homosexuality aside, it just doesn't feel like the great sci-fi anti-war novel some critics make it out to be. I didn't care about the main character and the ending was very abrupt. Maybe I'm missing something here - it is part of a trilogy, after all. 1.5/5.

Topic: Contrarian Barbarian's Book Club (Of greatness!)
@bookstodon I'm popping this up once more, just in case anyone else wants to join before our first meeting in late June.
Is anyone out there interested in being a part of a Contrarian Barbarian's Book Club where we read whatever the hell we want individually and meet up once a month on the newly formed Contrarian Barbarian Discord server to tell each other about it for a couple of minutes each and then discuss? (All genres/fiction/non-fiction on the table.)
The key focus would be sharing books we love with other people in a positive way. It'd have the diehard rule that if you freakin' love a thing, no one can be negative about it because that would be raining on your parade and your parade is spectacular dammit!
All time zones welcome to say hi!
