Sometimes I wonder what #recommendation #algorithms would be like if they were built for #neurodivergent folks. Anywhere with an #algorithm seems to get things wildly wrong for me. I assume my #ADHD scattershot and #autistic deep-dive ways of engaging with topics confuse the hell out of heuristics tuned for NT levels of attention and engagement. Do my fellow NDs have similar poor experiences too? Or is this just how it is universally and all recommendations suck for everyone, no matter the neurotype?
(Note: Using "algorithm" to describe a recommendation engine is a bit lazy and ignores that much of what matters is the data the algorithm operates on, but I'm not up for dying on that hill today.)

I still think streaming doesn't properly respect liner notes, even on Apple's new Classical music app (which often credits the notes' authors without giving you the notes themselves). This app is nearly as good, though. Hit the share button on a song or album in Apple Music, and this will be a destination if it's installed. It then gives insanely detailed notes.

I'm only a few chapters in but it's good although frustrating reading. It is very #political but all the necessary readings these days are. Personally I think everyone should read it, but particularly anyone over the age of 40 because that demographic are those least likely to understand the issues raised in it and experienced predominantly by younger Australians.

It has been years since I taught intro psychology, or really anything that isn’t statistics and research methods for that matter, and have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying listening to the Psych podcast by Paul Bloom and David Pizarro, based on Paul’s book. My favorite so far is his 2022 movie _Decision to Leave_, a complex blend of crime drama, thriller, and love story. ★★★★★

The Undersea Network by Nicole Starosielski
There are other good books about network infrastructure, but the thing I found fascinating about this one is the level of #culture and #history analysis it does. It goes into detail about the impacts transpacific cables have had on the various Pacific islands they land on. Things like politics and military involvement, and local populations' inability to have a say in where the cables land (or whether they do at all). Lack of benefit to local populations (both network and economic) since frequently the cables aren't even terminated at all on these islands, they are just pass-throughs. "Cable colonies" that got established for Europeans servicing the cables to live separately from the indigenous folks. This book is full of interesting, important stuff - I highly recommend it.
