A contender in this round of #MinCup23, #Calcite comes in several forms, including #Optical Calcite, sometimes called #Iceland Spar or #Iceland Crystal, the strong #birefringence properties are on display in this #photograph as the #crystal creates a small #rainbow-like formation on the right side. This property has made it a candidate for the somewhat mysterious #SunStone from #Viking legend, able to find the Sun despite overcast conditions by looking for the double #refraction.
This form of calcite often cleaves into parallelepiped (parallelogram extended into 3D) sections, such as the one pictured.

Absolutely incredible moonrise for the blue moon/supermoon combo tonight. I went out to Cape Saunders on the Otago Peninsula and boy was I glad I did! A wet #crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) #empetrumnigrum #berry #plant with #drops and #refraction in the mountains in Norway. I was on a trip with two of my siblings Anne @anneaustenaa her dog @aslan.blanco and Bjørn @bjorntau and came across one. They don't taste very good but you can eat them :-)
I left my 2:1 Laowa macro lens in the car so I had to use a 1:1 Sony macro lens. I used a Sony A7C camera.

These were experimental to get a feel for the software, workflow, materials, & render times. It’s interesting the green #glow isn’t reflected on the floor. I think I was attempting simulated #UraniumGlass.

Under exceptionnal conditions, one can see a primary and secondaries #rainbows, separated by Alexander's dark band (nothing to do with me).
This #APOD #photography is a supernumerary #rainbow. No dark band in between the rainbows. The extra rainbows in this #picture are not due to #refraction but instead #interference. Same as looking to a compact disk.
