We are going through the bounty and diversity of this planet in full knowledge of our actions - we see it all happen from #Space.

But #RemoteSensing can also play a role in enforcement #ParisAgreement. A call to arms:
" EO science must undergo a radical overhaul: it must become more user-oriented, collaborative, and transdisciplinary; span the range from fiducial to contextual data; and embrace new technologies for data analysis (e.g., artificial intelligence)."

My dear #radar imagery experts in the Fediverse... Do you know why #gee Sentinel 1 GRD collection is mostly (like almost all images) comprised of S1A images? (I know S1B died not long ago)

Also, the ascending node and descending node backscattering time series look very different, ascending has less images and is (thus) less noisy while the descending has almost double the images and has different backscattering values between consecutive passes.

Very happy for my two former colleagues, Bo and Santiago, who got awarded for their work on #RemoteSensing of volcanic gas plumes. The instrument they developed is used to monitor several #volcanoes all over the world and helps to forecast eruptions.

📜 new Paper:
Deriving productivity of forests from #RemoteSensing remains challenging. This new #study presents a novel approach to estimate #forest productivity by combining #radar remote sensing measurements, #machine_learning and an individual-based forest model.
Our results emphasize the value of the forthcoming BIOMASS #satellite mission and highlight the potential of deriving estimates for forest productivity from information on forest structure.

We just released data on crown maps for 100 million trees in the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) with information on location, species identify, size, and alive/dead status.

We created this dataset by combining deep learning, remote sensing, and extensive field data to build models that can detect and classify individual trees. Models are almost 80% accurate and can be improved with additional field data collection.

Pictures of the BART NEON site with tree crowns indicated by boxes of different colors for different species at three scales: 1) The full site and surrounding region; 2) 500 m x 250 m; and 3) 90 m x 150m. The largest scale exhibits clusters and gradients of different colors. At the middle scale small boxes can be seen clustered by color. At the finest scales tree crowns can be seen surrounded by boxes of different colors.

Sea ice concentration (Remote sensing 🛰️)

Sea ice concentration is a useful variable for climate scientists and nautical navigators. It is defined as the area of sea ice relative to the total at a given point in the ocean. This article will deal primarily with its determination from remote sensing measurements.

“The map could help the agency decide where the first astronauts to the Red Planet should land. The more available water, the less missions will need to bring.
Buried ice will be a vital resource for the first people to set foot on Mars, serving as drinking water and a key ingredient for rocket fuel. But it would also be a major scientific target: Astronauts or robots could one day drill ice cores much as scientists do on Earth, uncovering the climate history of Mars and exploring potential habitats (past or present) for microbial life.…”

📣 Very excited to see this paper -- led by Lucas Johnson with Madeleine Desrochers and Colin Beier -- officially published!

Using #Landsat imagery and #MachineLearning tools, we estimate forest biomass across New York State from 1990 - 2019. These #maps will help us quantify how much carbon is stored in forests across the state, how that's changed in 30 years, and how we can expect that to change into the future.

New York State (USA) AGB difference map (2019 AGB - 1990 AGB) with predictions from the ensemble model. a) Statewide scale. b) A mosaic of working forests and Adirondack Forest Preserve land south of Stillwater Reservoir, NYS. c) Allegany River area with a portion of Allegany State Park to the east of the river. d) Forest growth along the border of the Catskill Forest Preserve. Values are capped at ± 75 Mg ha−1 for display.

Any #remotesensing peeps know a good source of global methane emission mapping data? TROPOMI's only been up there since 2018, there is a Canadian satellite SCISAT-1 which has been been around since 2003 but it's not really an imaging satellite, I get the impression it looks through the atmosphere towards the sun rather than at the ground. Is there anything else out there with a record of at least a couple of decades?
