A wary little skink peeps out between two flowerpots.

Our former home was a log house with a wide front porch. When I sat on the porch reading, if I kept very still, tiny baby skinks would come out to sun themselves. They were unbelievably small and delicate, with bright blue tails, and feet so microscopic it seemed they couldn't be real. They'd settle down on their tummies, wiggle a few times to get comfy, then press their legs against their bodies and doze.

#reptiles #photography #skinks

The head and shoulders of a brown and tan lizard enter the image from behind a flowerpot at the left. He is sleek and elegant. Dark brown bands sweep backward from his head like racing stripes. His bright eye looks like a dark glass marble in an intricate setting of polished scales. Behind his jaw we see the opening of his ear. He is watching and listening.

Why did the turtle cross the road.

I came across this three-toed box turtle (Terrapene triunguis) while takin Ben to his appointment this morning. The turtle was crossing the road just down from our house. I stopped took a couple photos with my iPhone. The pick the turtle up and set it on the side of the road where it was headed. I worried that somebody would drive down the road and run it over.

"From the west to the east of its range, the three-toed box turtle can be found from eastern Texas to the northern edge of the Florida Panhandle. Its northernmost range is in Missouri and Kansas, while the southernmost one is in Louisiana. Three-toed box turtles interbreed with other subspecies of common box turtles which overlap the borders of this area. An example of this occurs in the eastern Mississippi valley, where this species is difficult to distinguish from the eastern box turtle. " - https://animalia.bio/three-toed-box-turtle

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #turtles #reptiles

This is a relatively small turtle, I picked it up with one hand, fingers on either side of its shell. It's mostly green but its head and front feet are more colorful, with yellow and red markings. In this photo, the turtle is crossing a gravel and dirt road, you can see the track it made moving itself along the ground. Only its front feet are visible in this photograph.

Three-toed box turtles are so named due to the number of toes on the back feet, but some think that there are some four-toed examples too. "However, some speculate that the four-toed individuals are actually eastern box turtle × three-toed box turtle hybrids. Three-toed box turtles have a domed shell which grows to 5-7″ (13-18cm) in length. The highest part of its carapace or upper shell is more posteriorly positioned than in any of the other subspecies. The dorsal and limb coloration is commonly completely absent, although some dark blotches are common in adult turtles. These areas more often being a uniform olive green or tan color. Sometimes, faint yellow dots or lines are visible in the center of each large scute. In the males, the head and throat often display yellow, red, or orange spots. Frequently, the bottom shell or plastron is a straw yellow color and has far fewer dark markings than the plastrons of the other subspecies." - https://animalia.bio/three-toed-box-turtle

So there's a bunch of bot accounts that post animal photos every hour. Which is all well and good, except that it's the usual suspects - cats, dogs, wolves... I think I saw one for possums, but I'm not sure.

But where's all the cool "not the same boring fuzzy mammals" photo bots? I humbly request more neat #reptiles, and to a lesser extent, what about hourly #isopod , #corvid , and/or #shark photos?

I'd do it myself if I weren't so lazy : /

My #ballpython has finally awoken from her months-long stupor and seems ready to roam around my apartment again. Her period of low activity seemed to coincide with the European winter and the West African dry season, which is when wild pythons are documented to be less active.

I wonder if humidity levels play a role in influencing her activity, as it’s dryer in winter due to heating, or if she’s only out more because my place has gotten nice and toasty due to the summer heat. #snake #reptiles

Kolubrid Korner: Western ribbon snake. This one was VERY tiny, no fatter than my pinkie finger and about 18” long. I love how, as a rule, members of the garter genus so obligingly condescend to pose for me as I laboriously hunker down to ground level and constantly press the wrong buttons on my phone. Like, “this old battle-axe has bad knees, let’s cut her a break.”

Oh hello there.

Came within a nanosecond of steppin’ on this guy. It was lying motionless across the path and my peripheral vision took it for a stick. Luckily my lizard brain kicked in with more accurate intel in the nick of time and stayed my feckless foot.

Hadn’t seen this species out here before. I’m no snakespert, but the Seek App claims it’s a black-necked garter. About 2 feet long and quite striking.

I sustained about half a dozen fire ant stings while crouching down to take this photo. Can’t believe my agonized flailing didn’t scare off my subject, but charitably it posed until I was finished, then slithered gracefully into the grass.

On the same Museum of Science naturalist hike at Holly Shelter yesterday, we saw an interesting variety of wildlife! A slider turtle, a pygmy rattlesnake!, a cool Beetle that lives in the Longleaf Pine bark, and a little garter snake.

PS the reason the Garter Snake and turtle are being held, is they were laying in the middle of a road so the naturalist was showing them to us before moving them into a safe spot.

Sorting through some old photos, and this little Gecko is such a cutie. Phelsuma laticauda, from Mayotte, in 2018. #wildlife #reptiles #photography

A gold dust day gecko, standing on the side of a wooden beam.
The body colour is a bright green with red speckles on the head and the upper back. The upper part of the skin around the eye is blue. The tail is slightly flattened. The under side is off-white.
The same Gecko, sitting on a palmtree flower. The flowers are heavily populated be bees, and the gecko looks very interested in them.
A few second after the scene of the previous picture on the palmtree, the gecko has advanced a bit a you can see its underside.

As I am deciding what rule to apply for what I mark as sensitive content, I guess it also makes sense to announce it !
I will pin this toot, and I guess having a hashtag if other people want to do the same makes sense so here it is : #MyCWRules

So what I will always put as sensitive content :
#Spider
#Reptiles
Other obvious things

If you have any idea/suggestions, please let me know !
