A prime gap is the difference between two successive prime numbers. A twin prime is a prime that has a prime gap of two. The twin prime conjecture states that there are infinitely many twin primes. In May 2013, the popular Yitang Zhang's paper was accepted by the journal Annals of Mathematics where it was announced that for some integer N that is less than 70 million, there are infinitely many pairs of primes that differ by N. A few months later, James Maynard gave a different proof of Yitang Zhang's theorem and showed that there are infinitely many prime gaps with size of at most 600. A collaborative effort in the Polymath Project, led by Terence Tao, reduced to the lower bound 246 just using Zhang and Maynard results. In this note, using arithmetic operations, we prove that the twin prime conjecture is true.

Y’all ready for some research? Game on. 🎮
Allen West from Akamai SIRT identified a new botnet targeting the gaming industry which we have dubbed “Dark Frost.”
Through reverse engineering and other analysis, it became clear that it was a hodgepodge of other known malware families such as Mirai, Gafgyt, and Qbot.
Dark Frost showcases an example of a surprisingly common threat profile to be wary of: relatively unsophisticated, yet able to orchestrate successful attacks.
We like to focus on the “big baddies” but in truth, this cobbled-together botnet was able to amass over 400 devices to do its bidding, successfully attacking multiple aspects of the gaming industry.
The blog dives deeply into the botnet and the author, who is a stellar example of the threat profile outlined above.

4) Researchers at Tohoku University attached electrodes to mushrooms to track their electrical signal transfers after rain ⚡ 🍄
More interesting research on mycelial networks! Plus, it's lab confirmation of what mushroom hunters already know about how lightning affects fungi growth

Good news! When given unambiguous information, partisans can agree on the facts

#AskFedi: what advice would you give me for doing a #math #research project for the summer?
(It’s something theoretical about #statistics that’s related to ML. I’m gonna keep it vague just to maintain academic integrity.)
I published my first academic paper thirty years ago.
Overnight, a researcher contacted me to ask if I had the data for the main figure in the paper so that they could reproduce it.
Could I help? The data was from the time before Windows, 5.25-inch floppy discs, and graphs sent from a Unix environment directly to a printer for redrawing for publication by a cartographer.
You bet! In my archive, there was the original input data and code (Fortran77). And now shared.

Is there a decent curated list of companies using tech for humanitarian and socially good causes like climate change, mental health, diversity, non-profit, research etc?
There's a lot of lists for BigTechCo, but I haven't seen others.

Stimpunks Guide to the NeurodiVerse Issue #4: From an Ivory Tower Built on Sand to Open, Participatory, Emancipatory, Activist Research
In this issue, we highlight how the vast majority of autism research is divorced from the lived realities of autistic people. We discuss how to move from "an ivory tower built on sand" to open + participatory + emancipatory + activist research.

Ableism and disablism – how to spot them and how we can all do better.
Disability has been called the world’s largest minority and is a group anyone can join at any time in their life.
However, two of society’s biggest “-isms” – ableism and disablism – still go largely unnoticed and unaddressed.

I'm in the office today, but yesterday marked my first exploration of #BurlingtonVT's #urban #streams. I got to explore two very different small small streams, both affected by #stormwater #runoff, but only one with clear evidence of active #beavers. Looking forward to doing #research here! #FieldworkFriday #FieldPhotoFriday
