Today I would like to talk a bit about the importance of conversations and new encounters. A key ingredient to successfully getting into something very new, at least for me, is to talk to competent people, to get solid advice from both reliable friends and experts, to find mentors, to carefully listen with humility to what these people have to say, and to use their […]

New Bing experience.
I opened this Nature article in Edge so I could dissect the #research a little faster with #ChatGPT help (Bing or Copilot or whatever your name is now)

It immediately decided this was a "sensitive medical topic" therefore it wouldn't be tracked or included in my conversation history. This appears to be some sort of HIPPA compliance attempt but it's relatively new. (I open medical research frequently in Edge)

I'm working to transition my #blog from primarily an #IndieAuthor website to a #science #writing platform. Since I can't compete with big media outlets, I need a niche. My ideas so far:

- Essays that celebrate #nature 's tenacity in the face of #ClimateChange.

- Reports on new #research that doesn't make major headlines.

- #Environment #news roundups that include fictionalized forecasts of the scenarios.

Please vote (and boost) so I can get a sense of the potential audience. If you have other suggestions, add them in the comments!

Oli kelpo tutkimusraportti, joskin raskas lukea nykyaivoillani. Twitteristä pakoa eikun siirtymistä tarkasteltiin samaan tapaan kuin vaikka koronan leviämistä, mitä tuli infektioihin ja tartuntoihin. Kiinnostaisi varmaan epidemiologejakin?

Set up for a performance, with a cello and chair in the front and lots of large pieces of knitted artwork - knitted patterns that are also representations of musical notes, and a screen that says the title of the project 'The Resonance Project'
Me sitting on the floor, wrapped in one of the pieces of knitting, with my cello in front of me (also on the floor) and the case upright next to me. The walls are plain and the flore is a plain wooden floor.

I am so frustrated that @thecarpentries is laying off 7 talented people - 4 with PhDs - mostly #research #software #engineers - because of financial constraints.

The Carpentries train researchers in digital and coding skills - allowing them to use computational methods, because universities often aren't placed to do this themselves.

In a time when the only organisations that can train huge models are those that can afford the compute time, we need more people with the skills to evaluate them and find their weaknesses.

We need to find a way to fund the Carpentries or we will have a generation of researchers who won't have the computational research skills needed to keep Big Tech accountable.

@barneyharris Images are (usually) huge - an image is basically an archive of an entire operating system - and so if you only share the image itself, people using it have little hope of understanding what you put in it. So for transparency, it's best to share the recipe you used to create the image as well, namely the Dockerfile. The Dockerfile is like the source code for the image.

And Docker image builds are not strictly reproducible; if you build images from the same Dockerfile at different times or in different environments you can get different resulting images, unless the Dockerfile is carefully designed to avoid any dependency on external factors. So it helps to share the image itself to guarantee that people have access to the same thing you used.

noob question about #reproducible #research #docker #rstats #python #academicchatter #foss

If I'm looking to use Docker to assist with making my research reproducible then should I rely on both Dockerfiles and Dockerimages or one or the other? As I understand it, the Dockerfile specifies how the Docker image will be built but an image can contain the scripts, original data, and correctly versioned software / libraries etc. So why not just / always publish the image?

So is this the deal with the new @eLife system:
1- you send your preprint
2- it is reviewed (if they so choose)
3- you eventually upload a final “version of record”
OR
4- you send the reviewed preprint (+reviews) to another journal for publication

Has anyone tried that step 4? Do the “other journals” accept to publish something that’s already been reviewed by eLife?

Of course, you could do 3 instead but does having an eLife paper under the new system “count” for your CV?

Edit 1: here’s an explanation of the new eLife process: https://elifesciences.org/peer-review-process

Edit 2: clarified the link between step 3 and 4 (either/or, not both)

Hi all, it seems like our Mastodon account is not as interactive/popular as we hoped it would be 😉 Are you seeing our toots? Is there any specific content you would like to see about our institute? Or are you just not on Mastodon for that kind of thing? #biology #research #climateresearch

An interesting look at how Defra digital, data and technology's Becky Miller & Daniel Barwick took “… an #Ethnographic approach to understand people’s lived experience” as part of a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs #Research project. ⤵️

An interesting theory.

"Here's the thinking: when dinosaurs ruled Earth, it was necessary for the much smaller mammals to be able to reproduce quickly in order to survive, which means the genes for longer lifespans may have been discarded as evolution progressed."

As a way to teach myself #emscripten, I just managed to create a web version of Samplin’ Safari (my small #research tool to explore #MonteCarlo sampling patterns for #rendering ). Check it out here on #GitHub pages:

A brilliant, timely LSE blog by @brembs

“…the Fediverse’ provides tools and technologies that are ideally suited to bring scholarly societies out of their digital caves and into the 21st century.”

“The root of their names contains their essential function, as described in 1660 for one of the first such societies, the Royal Society:

“Their first purpose was no more, then onely the satisfaction of breathing a freer air, and of conversing in quiet one with another, without being ingag’d in the passions, and madness of that dismal Age”.

Jane Cooke Wright is a pioneering cancer researcher and surgeon. Not only did she contribute a lot to chemotherapy, she developed a drug to treat breast/skin cancer.

AND if that wasn’t enough, she did something extraordinary for humans and animals alike. She figured out how to use human skin tissue for testing instead of using mice.

"Long COVID Research Is a Bit of a Mess"

“For the past three years, much of the media and discussion around long COVID has treated the post-viral condition as an entirely new illness, a view that has been reflected in its research …

But if ME had been studied more thoroughly – or even just believed – years ago, much of the foundational work of long COVID research may already have been achieved."

Chronic fatigue syndrome – or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) – is the elephant in the long COVID room. For the past three years, much of the media and discussion around long COVID has treated the post-viral condition as an entirely new illness, a view that has been reflected in its research; scientists from around the world have scrambled to study the disease from scratch.

But if ME had been studied more thoroughly – or even just believed – years ago, much of the foundational work of long COVID research may already have been achieved. That’s certainly the belief of many of those suffering from ME, who often live exceptionally stationary lives due to their condition. Some are bed-bound, quite literally, for decades.

“Half of long COVID symptoms are basically equivalent to ME symptoms,” says Chris Ponting, a professor at the University of Edinburgh’s Medical Research Council Human Genetics Unit and lead investigator of its Decode ME project.

Breeding penguins sleep ten thousand times a day! 🐧 💤 New study finds that with second-long microsleeps the penguins’ sleep still sums up to 12 hours a day! Microsleep seems to be a successful strategy to breed safely without losing the essential functions of sleep.

I've had repeated experiences in academia where someone pumps me for free information (which they then monetize) or just outright lifts my work without permission/credit/citation. e.g. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1N1HCiHed7A6G2_e3-jPVKzYSPAiURVYM-unOfyI8UdQ/edit?usp=sharing

How do you remain open so that you can be reachable for truly collaborative work that respects you & compensates you, yet closed when it comes to being viewed as someone whose work can be exploited? How do you approach this? @academicchatter #Research #Academia

People are now causing El Niño.

"Until about 50 years ago, changes in solar radiation played a significant role in shaping El Niño patterns. From the 1970s onwards, however, we see clear signals that can only be attributed to the consequences of man-made climate change."
