If you are a researcher working in the field of threat intelligence, always remember not to omit referencing the GitHub repositories from which you copy-pasted information for your paper. Failing to provide proper references is considered poor research practice.

Furthermore, merely copying and pasting the README without actually running or testing the software goes beyond bad research practice. Unfortunately, such papers are sometimes published by IEEE because there is no rigorous review process, and it appears that the publisher is primarily motivated by profit.

'Negotiations' for the UK to rejoin the #Horizon research programme continue.... #JeremyHunt's in #Brussels trying (again) to get a discount because we've missed the first two years of the new programme.

Problem is that we caused that delay not the EU, and the feeling at the #EuropeanCommision is that they're not going to offer a discount because the UK can't get its ducks in a row.

Meanwhile #universities are hemorrhaging #researchers departing for somewhere they *can* get Horizon money now!

This is a beautiful read for anyone interested in #Libraries or in #GLAM - the story of Pauline Atherton Cochrane, a #Syracuse #librarian, who in the 1970s, worked on the #SUPARS project, one of the first #library search and information retrieval (#IR) systems.

It shows how the team anticipated shifts in how research would be conducted, and acted to support #researchers.

I have found that #AI #researchers are an extremely heterogeneous group of people. People from around the world from all kinds of backgrounds. People who disagree with each others strongly across a wide range of topics.

I for example have always been a proponent of #NeuralNetworks, specifically asynchronous and sparse ones. I know many AI researchers who think the truth will be found in traditional machine learning algorithms such as gradient boosting and Bayesian models, starting from solid statistical theory and going onwards from that. Some researchers believe mammalian brain chemistry must be simulated exactly, some believe it all just implements some simpler underlying algorithm which can be implemented more efficiently in some other substrate.

I am a #panpsychist who believes there can be no computation in this universe which isn't fundamentally experiential. I know many AI researchers who think that's crazy, and I think they are crazy for not coming to the same conclusion.

The blogosphere is still on fire of the great on-going argument battles between people who believe in #symbolic AI against people who believe in #subsymbolic AI. Both sides consider the other side crazy.

I think this diversity of opinion has contributed greatly to the speed of progress. I hope we don't lose it. Although it is very difficult to build teams with coherent visions out of people who couldn't disagree with each others more.

This difference in opinions is a great driver of progress because people have a strong motivation and need to prove themselves right. It's a competition where the competitors compete to be right, through hard work.

If you're asking yourself: "But who is right?", you might not be asking the correct question. There are probably many routes to AGI, and what matters is drive and capacity to execute.

Did you know that they just revealed the oldest #runestone ever?

"Just" = 2 days ago!

#Norwegian #researchers found a grave & a #stone (+ more) engraved with #runes at the site of an extension for the railway in Norway.

The larger stone has been dated to a period between AD 1 & AD 250, which may well be the earliest runic inscription yet.

It reads "Idiberug", which may either be a family name or a female name.

Lecturers, librarians and researchers join picket lines as UCU says staff are at ‘breaking point". “Pay is abysmal, falling 25% since 2009. Our pensions have been cut 35% despite the fact the scheme is in surplus and we could easily restore that cut. And we also have a system where a third of academic staff – 90,000 people – are employed on insecure contracts.

@EposVox I did this when I needed an article for my MA thesis. My uni didn't have access, friends at different unis had the same problem...

Didn't know this was allowed, so I felt bad about approaching the author directly, but sent him a polite email, explaining the situation.

Received a very charming reply within hours, PDF of what I needed attached, he even expressed interest in my thesis topic.
