What AP didn't say:
"Wolverines range widely, up to 15 mi / day, & need lots of habitat. Home range can vary from 100 to 600 sq mi. They live primarily at high altitudes with alpine vegetation, but can venture to lower elevations."
We need to grow complex forest and grassland mixes with wetland-speckled landscapes again for all the wildlife, for all the watersheds

We can do MUCH better.
I spent 5 minutes on this very quick mockup.
After much thought the plan is to use Aesthetic Set 22 as the fabric design and make everything else matt black. Will work on this as time and money allows.
I'm looking for examples of companion planting using #nativespecies for #foodsystems and #ecological #restoration. The Three Sisters method of growing corn, beans, and squash together is an example from #indigenous North America. Are there other regional examples of native plants that can be grown together for mutual benefit? What about sea vegetables in #coastal settings?

A couple of old #saws arrived, 2€ each, that I mostly bought for the saw bolts. But one of them is a rip saw in such good condition that I’m not going to sacrifice it. The plate on the other one has three broken teeth, however, and the handle is beat up, but it does provide three brass bolts in nice shape. That’s a win-win, I think.

Been scratching my head as to why the ribbon spools would not come off the Empire Aristocrat. They're not the originals but look the right type, Group 9. After checking it wasn't an obscure lever or clip, a decent grip and pull worked and the issue was degraded stickers on the bases that had glued the spool down over the years, probably 20+

This morning was the monthly volunteer gathering to continue to remove invasive honeysuckle, buckthorn, and box elder from one of the few remaining fens in Illinois. My youngest and I had a wonderful time. It was 35° F and sunny when we started, so basically near perfect for cutting and hauling brush and trees. We had a number of new people join us which made for great progress in our work area. #conservation #Illinois #restoration #volunteering
What should happen to native forests when logging ends? Ask Victoria’s First Peoples
"Conservationists are celebrating a win sought for decades. The damage done by logging on biodiversity has been significant, with once common species now endangered and mature forests now fragmented and dotted with young fire-prone regrowth."
"Colonisation affected Country differently across Australia. But many effects are similar across the continent. European-style land management coincides with species extinctions across the continent. "
Reading the black book: The number, timing, distribution and causes of listed extinctions in Australia
"We conclude that 100 Australian endemic species are validly recognised as extinct since 1788: a rate of loss of about 4.3 species per decade since European colonisation of the continent. This rate is not diminishing and we interpret this more-or-less constant but continuing rate of loss .."
"Here, we review the record of extinctions. We ask the following: (1) how many extinctions have occurred; (2) whether particular taxonomic groupings have been most affected; (3) when did they occur; (4) where did they occur; and (5) what factors caused or contributed to them?"

Plants are likely to absorb more CO₂ in a changing climate than we thought
"And last but not least, because plants help fight climate change, it’s essential to conserve existing plant biomass and restore lost vegetation."
"But while plants might even be more industrious helpers than previously assumed, they will never do the heavy lifting for us. It is still up to us humans to fight climate change by drastically cutting fossil fuel emissions. There is no shortcut".>>

“Tidal wetlands are natural breakwaters,” says Eric Balke, senior restoration biologist and Fraser River Estuary program manager with the conservation group.
But not here. For decades, logs have broken free from storage facilities and industrial sites throughout the Fraser River Estuary. They appear as pieces of natural art dotting the landscape – but in reality, they are deadly.
The Hallwood Side Channel and #Floodplain #Restoration Project includes nearly two miles of restored side channels and alcoves and more than six miles of seasonally flooded side channels – areas that are essential for fish where they can hide from predators, rest, eat and grow. Recent fish surveys show that steelhead and salmon are already using the new habitat.

NY Times article by Amanda Holpuch (unlocked):
Restoration or destruction?
Elsewhere they start to restore and protect nature, in Australia the environment stays poor and is deteriorating
"Nature is dying faster than ever before in recorded human history with devastating consequences for people and the planet, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) found in its review of the scientific research in 2019. In Europe, where more than 80% of habitats are in poor shape, the nature restoration law was proposed in a bid to reverse this trend and stop the planet heating."
"Legislation will set targets to restore 20% of EU land and seas by 2030, and 90% of degraded habitats by 2050"
"Protecting nature is a cheap way of keeping people safe from violent weather and a key tool to cut planet-heating pollution. The European Commission estimates that every euro invested in restoring land would offer a return of between €8 (£7) and €38."

Restorers were going to toss out this table (preexisting damage from putting boiling hot canned tomatoes on it), so I decided to restore it since we'd like to keep it. "Grazers can bring myriad benefits to landscapes. Bison can improve plant diversity in Midwest #prairies by cropping dominant grasses. Elephants boost #carbon storage in African #forests by munching on less carbon-rich trees.

Given its lacklustre response, Dalrymple can’t help but sympathise with guerrilla rewilders – at least to some degree.
“The status quo is that we’re monitoring things into extinction,” she says. “There’s also a risk in inaction, and that’s becoming clearer to a lot of people.”

Eric Dinerstein et al argue for "A “Global Safety Net” to reverse biodiversity loss and stabilize Earth’s climate."
"Global strategies to halt the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change are often formulated separately, even though they are interdependent and risk failure if pursued in isolation. The Global Safety Net maps how expanded nature conservation addresses both overarching threats."
In a nutshell:
Provide connectivity: wildlife and climate corridors.
Involve and respect Indigenous knowledge.
The Global Safety Net
The first global-scale analysis of land areas requiring protection to solve the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change, upholding and strengthening Indigenous land rights. The Global Safety Net is the first comprehensive global-scale analysis of terrestrial areas essential for biodiversity and climate resilience, totaling 50.4% of the Earth's land.

"Though the living roof is small in comparison to other whole-landscape #rewilding projects, the hidden secrets and history of this patch of green hold inspiration and lessons for small-scale rewilding efforts in cities everywhere."
"Australia now has about 100 ecological communities at risk."
"Australia is an enormous contributor to global biodiversity loss. A recent study found 97 species in Australia have now gone extinct since British colonisation in 1788, with roughly 10% of all native mammal species gone forever. The numbers would be higher if invertebrate losses were included."
"What happened here? These forests have been subject to decades of intensive clearfell logging, as well extensive cutting dating back to the late 1920s."

Disassembly of a 1971 Olivetti Lettera 32 typewriter. Sadly a tiny plastic gear broke and I can't find a replacement. I'll be parting this out, hopefully helping someone else and restoring their own Lettera 32.
I am very very proud of myself right now 😁
It's not the best job but it's mine. I have the urge to hang the frame on a wall 😂
For anyone interested, green is for the earth, blue is for the sky, and white for life and death (not that I intend to gamble my life whilst cycling). I'm going to draw a swallow to the head tube and possibly a wee tree by the bottom bracket. And then the top protective coat before the rebuild.
One more colour to go!
I made some more mistakes I'd like to fix but I have no more paint. So I'll either live with those, draw on them, or put a sticker on. It's all part of the learning process and as I said previously, it marks the bike as mine. All those mistakes made because of lack of patience are my eagerness to get to the finish line, 5o rebuilt the bike, and ride.
I'm back at it 😁
Today I'm priming the frame and fork. I am hoping to paint too but that'll be dependent on the weather and dry times.
This is the very scary process. I have definitely been too eager once on this fork, but it's okay. It's mostly going well and I can always sand down the primer.
Wish me luck.
Last year this was all invasive bramble. My neighborhood decided to create a roadside wildflower patch here.
Bees, moths, and other pollinators are flitting around that weren't here before.
I know I'm sharing this project a lot. But of all the things I'm trying to do, all the things I'm trying to do and only making marginal progress, it's nice see a few flowers that I KNOW wouldn't have been planted.
