It's Friday, so it's time for my #retro game of the week.
Lemmings is an all time classic game. One of the very best ever.
3D Lemmings... much less so.
A whole lot less so, though it did have HEAPS of ambition. Looking back on it now, it does shine a light on how developers struggled with early 3D in-game camera controls. Like, really, really struggled.

I sold off my gaming rig today. I’m stepping away from the hobby and this time I think for good. I don’t find joy in it anymore since it’s become so corporatized. I miss the 8 to 16 bit days… It’ll just be Apple Arcade for me going forward.
King's Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow! It was such a joy to play as Alexander (King Graham's son) in his second video game as the protagonist. I love going on adventures with Daventry's royal family, it is such a treat. Alex encountering Samhain—The Lord of the Dead—stuck with me as a potent episodic memory etched forever in my mind. Rocking up years before Wolfenstein 3D, this pioneering title sits halfway between it and the superb Mercenary. David Alan Smith’s game may well be the first ever FPS, but it was also heavy on exploration, charging you with finding/rescuing survivors who’d not yet fallen to deadly alien invaders. Amazing for the time and still a compelling challenge today.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was fun but now it is time to move on to the sequel, Soul Reaver! A personal favorite game that I played exclusively on the PS1 as a kid.

Urban Putt Denver is, sadly, closing its doors. However, there is an opportunity to rescue a one-of-a-kind stand up arcade game/mini golf "hole" before it ends up in the scrap heap.
Bunker Blast 3000 was designed to resemble a retro 1980s arcade game. As a mini-golf hole, the game is played by putting into a ramp underneath the "arcade" display. Sensors inside the game read the ball's velocity and angle, and the game renders a virtual ball on the screen, rolling through a "game grid" like environment reminiscent of Tron. The game then kicks the ball out for subsequent putt attempts.
The unit is 36 inches wide and roughly 5 to 6 feet tall. It features a color display and custom software that exists as a one-of-a-kind homage to classic arcade games.
Here's the deal though: This unit needs to be moved THIS SUNDAY, June 11th, when the dismantling of Urban Putt will be going on.

This code was added to the NES version of Elite. It doesn’t appear in any other 6502 versions.
It stops the docking computer from killing you if it screws up its approach.
It feels wrong, somehow. I mean, dodgy docking computers are practically Elite lore, right?
According to JadedUse2940 on Reddit, the #SegaGenesis / #MegaDrive has now been discontinued in Brazil. Yes, it was still supposedly in active production as of earlier this year!
Thus brings an end to an amazing 33-year run in Brazil for one of the greatest gaming consoles of all time.
Xevious 3D/G is a shmup STG released in 1996 for arcades and developed by Namco. The PlayStation version from 1997 is called Xevious 3D/G+ and includes the original Xevious, Super Xevious and Xevious Arrangement.

Demon grabs princess. Knight resolves to rescue her. So far, so cliché. But GnG clicked with gamers who loved playing beautifully realised platform games while being repeatedly punched in the face. Kudos if you managed to finish the thing, rather than curl up and whimper in the corner. Still, at least it didn’t come out a year later as a coin-guzzling ‘continues’ title…

Calling all #PCB #PCBdesign experts - what does "200191010" tell you on this board from a QuickShot Starfighter 5 gamepad, model QS-191, from the early 90s? Was this PCB made in January 1991, or October 1991, or does this mean something else entirely? What might the "2 3 SE 1994" stamp mean? And if it *was* made in 1991 - what might have kept it from being sold at retail until late '92/'93, when its box was printed? Two of my little projects. The RP Engine is a Raspberry Pi powered PC Engine box with a CD drive so it can boot actual PC engine CDs using RetroArch. I also intended to make a version of the base that could hold the PC Engine controller to USB adaptor from the second picture. On the left is the RT Engine, the recreated LT. Quite a bit chunkier than the original due to me wanting to use unmodified PCBs from an actual PC Engine and it’s controller. Both are open source #RetroGaming #Maker

Let's start with the Gameboy Advance SP mods I did earlier in the year: an IPS screen and a new battery.
The mods were pretty easy and they didn't take too long, as minimal soldering was needed and the original SP needed a new shell.

Having milked Olympic events to death, Epyx strayed beyond the conventional with this collection of sports minigames. Well, ish. Skiing was ‘Slalom’ from the dawn of gaming, and weightlifting was hardly brimming with innovation. But among the eight events were also 8-bit takes on sumo wrestling, cliff diving, caber tossing, and more, all peppered with humorous touches.

My kid and I made some custom Miis on the Wii after finding a site (https://MiiCharacters.com) that has a database of custom ones and step by step instructions on how to make them. I found (and my kid made) the David Letterman one, because I thought that would be amazing, to be able to race karts and motorcycles as David Letterman. 🤣
In Mario Kart, there's a thing where you can race as the same character. My son and I noticed that when you both race as Daisy with bikes and you both place, it randomly assigns a head to one of your characters so they won't both be the same.
So that's how Dave in Daisy's lovely yellow dress happened. A hilarious result. 😂🤣

This is the control unit for a PC Engine peripheral called the ‘Virtual Cushion’. It’s basically a rumble device that you sit on. I don’t have the cushion part of this so I figured I’d open it up. It’s a fairly simple device, it takes in the game audio over RCA jacks, pushes it out to a headphone and then (I’m guessing) uses the peaks to generate a signal that it sends to the cushion, which then activates the rumble. #RetroGaming
Just ordered a keyboard connector fixing kit for it. While it is not broken (yet), it makes removing and re-connecting the keyboard easier with no risk of causing damage.
Oh, and battery and leaking caps were taken care of years ago already. 🙂
