I was going to reply to someone about #capitalism but I decided to not. I’m starting to pick high vibe over low vibe energies to respond to. I was going to go on about the coming breaking point, but it’s like preaching to the choir. We all know heads are going to roll at some point, so illuminating that seems dull and obvious. It’s difficult to maintain any sort of high vibe with a world so irreparably broken as ours, but at least I can try. #today #atrocities #war #revolution

Today in Labor History November 26, 1911: Paul Lafargue, Cuban-French revolutionary and son-in-law of Karl Marx, died. Lafargue wrote “The Right to Be Lazy” in 1893 while in prison. Lafargue had Jewish, French, Indian, Creole and African ancestry. When IWW cofounder Daniel De Leon asked him about his origins, he replied that he was proudest of his “negro” ancestry. In his youth, Lefargue participated in the International Students Congress in 1865. Consequently, the government banned him from all French universities. So, he moved to London, where he became a frequent visitor to Marx’s house, ultimately marrying his daughter, Laura. Lafargue was a member of the General Council of the First International. He also participated in the Paris Commune.

It never fails to amaze how humans will take every single damn thing, bad OR good to it's most ridiculous extreme. This is why so many causes manage to turn away potential supporters. Extremism in it's most exaggerated form turns everyone off, not just the "other side".
Finding a balance, choosing the battles with intelligence and reason, engaging common sense and education... This is what wins at the end of the day.

In other words, he suggests that between the end of the war of the Austrian succession in 1748 and the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the French population underwent a series of convulsions, some as molten as others were icy, which resulted in a subtle but powerful molecular shift. After 500 years of rigidity, “it made anything seem possible”.

Today in Labor History November 23, 1903: Army troops were sent to Cripple Creek, Colorado to put down a rebellion by striking coal miners. 600 union members were thrown into a military bullpen, and held for weeks without charges. When a lawyer arrived with a writ of habeas corpus, General Bell, who led the repression, responded "Habeas corpus, hell! We'll give 'em post mortems!” The strike was led by Big Bill Haywood and the Western Federation of Miners, which, at the time, was the most militant union in the country, calling for revolution and abolition of the wage system.

Those who's currency is power will never be convinced to stop what they are doing. Why would they. They have figured out how to manipulate the masses for their own gain. You can't convince, coerce, bully or force them to change their ways. They will continue destroying the planet until there is nothing left.
How often has one corrupt government been replaced with another. How often have we chosen one brand over another only to find out later that it was all green washing, that they utilize child labour or have destroyed a habitat then covered it up. How often have we repeated the words of one big shot famous person, then found out they had a sketchy past and disgusting habits, were secretly TERFS or fascists. How often have we met our heroes only to find out they are deeply into imposter syndrome, never did the work themselves and are only a figurehead.

The time of kings and emperors is over. The time of celebrity culture is over. The ruling class has had it's turn. The billionaires are going the way of dinosaurs. A new era is here and it's just starting.
The time to stop telling people what to do and start doing it, is here. Years ago there was an old internet joke: "If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning."
It's time to stop being the horrible warning and start being a good example. Wars are won in the dark. Resistance occurs behind the scenes, in the back rooms and kitchens. What we have available to us is taking their power over us away. Many are going to die. Find the ways that make you and your group not be the ones that die.

Today in Labor History November 20, 1922: Ricardo Flores Magón died in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. Magon, with his brother Enrique, founded and edited the anarchist paper Regeneracion, founded the Partido Liberal de Mexico, and organized with the IWW. Magon was one of the major intellectual forces inspiring the Mexican Revolution, and he launched a short-lived revolution in Baja California, in which many IWW members from participated. In 1918, the U.S. arrested him under the 1917 Anti-Espionage Act, for publishing an anti-war manifesto. This was part of the First Red Scare, also known as the Palmer Raids, which also swept up Eugene Debs and Emma Goldman. Ricardo Flores Magon died 4 years later, in Leavenworth Prison.

Today in Labor History November 7, 1918: Kurt Eisner led an uprising that overthrew the Wittelsbach dynasty in Bavaria, during the German Revolution. After the Kiel Mutiny a few days prior, uprising broke out throughout Germany. Within months, the Independent Social Democrats, who were heading the provisional government, were overthrown by the Bavarian Raterepublik, composed of Workers', Soldiers', and Farmers' Councils. Those fighting the socialists included anarchists and anti-authoritarian communists like Erich Mühsam, Gustav Landauer, Ernst Toller and Ret Marut (who became known as the novelist B. Traven after fleeing the counterrevolution and living in exile in Mexico).

Today in Labor History October 26, 1889: The Ukrainian anarchist general Nestor Makhno was born in Huliaipole,. Makhno led a large insurrectionary army of peasants and helped defeat the reactionary White armies. His Black Army ultimately liberated and held onto the Free Territory within Ukraine, known as Makhnovia, from 1918 to 1921. It was a stateless, anarchist society that was defended by the Black Army. Roughly 7 million people lived in the area. The peasants who lived there refused to pay rent to the landowners and seized the estates and livestock of the church, state and private landowners, setting up local committees to manage them and share them among the various villages and communes of the Free State. His uprising was eventually crushed by Trotsky. Makhno died in exile in Paris, July 25, 1934.

Today in Labor History October 23, 1956: The Hungarian uprising began. It was part of the anti-Stalinist wave of protests throughout Eastern Europe. 250,000 students, workers and soldiers demonstrated in Budapest in support of the insurrection in Poland and for reforms in Hungary. Security police fired into the crowd, killing many. The USSR sent in tanks and troops. During the Russian occupation, 3,000 Hungarian fighters, 3,000 Hungarian civilians and 722 Soviet troops died.

Today in Labor History October 23, 1923: The Hamburg Uprising began when members of the Communist Party (KPD) stormed 24 police stations. From a military point of view, the attempt was futile and over in a day. Without support from the rest of Germany or from the Soviet Union, the communist insurgency disintegrated. Some 100 people died during the uprising. The exact details of the rebellion, as well as the assessment of its impact, remain controversial.

Today in Labor History October 22, 1956: Hungarian workers refused to obey their managers, calling instead for workers' self-management. The next day, the Hungarian Revolution began against the authoritarian government and subservience to the Soviet Union. The uprising last 12 days, before being crushed by Soviet Tanks. Up to 3,000 workers and revolutionaries were killed. 13,000 were wounded. 200,000 were exiled. Hundreds of Hungarian and Soviet troops also died putting down the uprising.

Artistic impression of Bloody Sunday in St. Petersburg. By Ivan Vladimirov - http://media.iwm.org.uk/iwm/mediaLib//26/media-26740/large.jpgThis photograph Q 81561 comes from the collections of the Imperial War Museums., Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=24235352

He is taking a course on Marxist ideology.
He says, “The only real solution is to smash the system and start again.”
His thumb is caressing the most bourgeois copy of the communist manifesto that I have ever seen,
He bought it at Barnes and Noble for twenty-nine U.S. American dollars and ninety-nine cents,
Its hard cover shows a dark man with a scarved face
Waving a gigantic red flag against a fictional smoky background.
The matte finish is fucking gorgeous.
He wants to be congratulated for paying Harvard sixty thousand dollars
To teach him that the system is unfair.
He pulls his iPhone from his imported Marino wool jacket, and leaves.

What people can’t possibly tell from the footage on TV
Is that the water cannon feels like getting whipped with a burning switch.
Where I come from, they fill it with sewer water and hope that they get you in the face with your mouth open
So that the hepatitis will keep you in bed for the next protest.
What you can’t tell from Harvard square,
Is that when the tear gas bursts from nowhere to everywhere all at once,
It scrapes your insides like barbed wire, sawing at your lungs.
Tear gas is such a benign term for it,
If you have never breathed it in you would think it was a nostalgic experience.
What you can’t learn at Barnes and Noble,
Is that when they rush you, survival is to run,
I am never as fast as when the police are chasing me.
I know what happens to women in the holding cells down there and yet…
We still do it.

I inherited my communist manifesto,
It has no cover—
Because my mother ripped it off when she hid it in the dust jacket of “Don Quixote”
The day before the soldiers destroyed her apartment,
Looking for subversive propaganda.
She burned the cover, could not bring herself to burn the pages,
Hoped to God the soldiers couldn’t read,
They never found it.
So she was not killed for it, but her body bore the scars of the torture chamber,
For wanting her children to have a better life than she did,
Don’t talk to me about revolution.

I know what the price of smashing the system really is, my people already tried that.
The price of uprise is paid in blood,
And not Harvard blood.
The blood that ran through the streets of Santiago,
The blood thrown alive from Argentine helicopters into the Atlantic.

It is easy to say “revolution” from the comfort of a New England library.

It is easy to offer flesh to the cause,
When it is not yours to give.

Today in Labor History October 19, 1944: A coup was launched against dictator Juan Federico Ponce Vaides, beginning the ten-year Guatemalan Revolution, which led to the rise of democratically elected President Jacobo Árbenz and the only years that representative democracy existed in Guatemala from 1930 until the end of the civil war in 1996. Arbenz led the implementation of social, political and agrarian reforms that were influential across Latin America. The CIA orchestrated a coup that overthrew him in 1954, leading to decades of genocide against the Indigenous Peoples of Guatemala, as well as the torture and murder of thousands of Communists, Socialists, labor leaders, clergy and activists.

Take a moment to think about basics

Take a moment to think about basics: activism/campaigning is about building resistance to the mainstream to change its flow in progressive directions. Were #mainstreaming is about shifting activism to reduce these resistances to the mainstream flow. Thus, it’s good to understand that #mainstreming is a #NGO agender to build the jobs of the people involved and is in turn funded to this end. Good not to get the shit mixed up.

Lifestyle is a way of forming a tribe inside this mainstream flow. The problem for activism is that this old school tribalism is obviously a BLOCK on social change, as looking and talking right are MORE important than being right. Being right would be “resistance” and lifestyle is about going with the counter flow.

On the other hand, the are advantages to “modern” tribal and lifestyle activism – it functions as social glue to hold campaigns together and provides a “uniform” flag to rally round. You notice I do not use words like anarchist, socialist, liberalism here as these have a different role in social change thinking – they are the ideas – the clothing is what I am taking about #fashernista is the hashtag.

#Revolution is about blowing up the flow of the mainstream so it floods into a different path, with much “calcollateral” damage in the process as we live inside a highly urban complex society. Both paths can be useful, both have costs.

Good not to mix this shit up

I’d be remiss if I failed to note that my correspondent’s argument is not only empirically wrong, but also deeply morally repugnant.

All of these systems—American chattel slavery, the feudalism of ancien regime France or czarist Russia, modern capitalism—are deeply, intrinsically violent. *Even if* exploited people tended to free themselves through violence, and *even if* they took revenge against their former exploiters, that violence would still pale against the constant violence of the systems against which they fought.

A history that prioritizes a handful of high-profile examples of spectacular but brief violence against elites while downplaying millennia of elite violence against everyone else isn’t really history; it’s propaganda. As Mark Twain noted:

“A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.”

Gravy Train to Oligarchy

Historian Nancy MacLean explains that Virginia’s white elite and the pro-corporate president of the University of Virginia, Colgate Darden, who had married into the DuPont family, found James Buchanan’s ideas to be spot on.

In nurturing a new intelligentsia to commit to his values, Buchanan stated that he needed a “#gravy #train,” and with backers like Charles #Koch and conservative foundations like the #Scaife Family Charitable Trusts, others hopped aboard.

Money, Buchanan knew, can be a persuasive tool in academia. His circle of influence began to widen.

MacLean observes that the #Virginia #school, as Buchanan’s brand of economic and political thinking is known, is a kind of cousin to the better-known, market-oriented Chicago and Austrian schools — proponents of all three were members of the #Mont #Pelerin #Society, an international neoliberal organization which included Milton #Friedman and Friedrich #Hayek.

But the Virginia school’s focus and career missions were distinct. In an interview with the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), MacLean described Friedman and Buchanan as yin and yang:
“Friedman was this genial, personable character who loved to be in the limelight and made a sunny case for the free market and the freedom to choose and so forth.
"Buchanan was the dark side of this: he thought, ok, fine, they can make a case for the free market, but everybody knows that free markets have externalities and other problems. So he wanted to keep people from believing that government could be the alternative to those problems.”

The Virginia school also differs from other economic schools in a marked reliance on #abstract #theory rather than mathematics or empirical evidence.

That a Nobel Prize was awarded in 1986 to an economist who so determinedly bucked the academic trends of his day was nothing short of stunning, MacLean observes. But, then, it was the peak of the #Reagan era, an administration several Buchanan students joined.

Buchanan’s school focused on #public #choice #theory, later adding constitutional economics and the new field of law and economics to its core research and advocacy.

The economist saw that his vision would never come to fruition by focusing on who rules. It was much better to focus on the rules themselves, and that required a “#constitutional #revolution.”

Many of the site’s characteristics are very reminiscent of later imperial China—from the walled palace section to the sacred observatory to the rigid class system—suggesting remarkable cultural and political continuity from the Neolithic.

But, around 2000 BCE, something really dramatic happened at Taosi:

“The city wall was razed flat, and inside the city the original functional divisions were completely destroyed…Commoners’ residential areas now covered almost the entire site, even reaching beyond the boundaries of the middle-period large city wall. The size of the city became even larger, reaching a total area of 300 ha. In addition, the ritual area in the south was abandoned. The former palace area now included a poor quality rammed-earth foundation of about 2,000 sq m, surrounded by trash pits used by relatively low-status people. Also, stone tool workshops occupied what had been the lower-level elite residential area.”

Archeologists discovered that elite tombs had been destroyed and bodies exhumed and desecrated. Grave goods were also dug up and tossed around, suggesting revenge rather than robbery. A ditch was dug and filled with bodies, garbage, and broken pieces of what had probably been a palace building. Elsewhere, commoners began burying their dead in what had formerly been the royal cemetery. The ritual observatory was also damaged and someone who died violently was buried there.

About 44 years ago the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (Sandinista National Liberation Front) overthrew the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua. It was known as the Sandinista Revolution.

One third of the rebels were women. They were at the forefront of the movement and integral to its success.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Salvador Allende, the revolutionary and socialist President of Chile.

Allende was assassinated in a military coup sponsored by US and CIA in a bid to wipe out communist ideology from Latin America.

However the left ideologies have made a big comeback in Latin America and including Chile majority of countries are ruled by left now..

I read the book "Toussaint L'Ouverture: The fight for Haiti's Freedom" by Jacob Lawrence and Walter Dean Myers. It's short enough to read to kids in a single sitting (<20 minutes) and conveys the basic idea of what the revolution was about. It's very brief and basically just provides a heroic story for Toussaint L'Ouverture...so I'm still looking for something with more substance (but still for pre-teen students).

To illustrate its brevity, the book skipped over some basic facts like that Haiti's cash crop was sugar, the short life expectancy of enslaved people, the brief abolition of slavery by the Parisian government, and didn't even include a map.

Did you know that the first female supercentenarian (someone reaching the age of 110) was also the first person whose life spanned three centuries?

Margaret Ann Neve was born in Guernsey in 1792. Her father was a wealthy privateer who died aged 49.

She remembered the #French #Revolution & visited #Waterloo just after the battle. She was married but childless. She did not eat or drink between meals, climbed an apple tree aged 110 & got her first ever illness at age 105.

She died in 1903.

This is a photo of Margaret Ann Neve.

It is a sepia-coloured photo from the Victoria age.

It shows an elderly lady looking straight into the camera.
She wears black Victorian garb, with a high collar, many small buttons, and a pocket watch on a silver chain.

Her hair is in two tight ringlets extending from her ears, clearly white, and her head is topped with a feathered hat, sporting two white flowers.

Her face is aged but pleasant. She has hooded sharp eyes, an elegant nose, and a small smile grazes her thin lips. Her right eyebrow is slightly tilted upward as if to say that she is not done with mischief yet.

The background is blank.
This is another photo of Margaret Ann Neve, not long before her death in 1903.

It shows an elderly lady in a black Victorian dress, with a lace collar in a scallop design. There is also a velvet necklace with a centered brooch around her neck.

A lace shawl is draped over her shoulders.

Her hands are folded left over right, on top of a booklet.

She looks towards the left of the room.

Her face is wrinkled, but her face is still smiling. Her eyes are still showing the same alertness too.

her hair is now slightly shorter but still in curls. It is held with a white lace bonnet.

The background is a painted Romanesque landscape.
