#Rumi was a 13th-century #Persian #poet, #mystic, and #scholar who is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets of all time. He wrote in Persian, #Arabic, and #Turkish, and his works have influenced many literary and spiritual traditions.

Rumi’s connection with drumming comes from his involvement with the Sufi order of the #Mawlawiyyah, also known as the Whirling Dervishes. The Mawlawiyyah was founded by Rumi’s disciples after his death, and they practiced a form of meditation that involved spinning in circles while listening to music and poetry. The music included #drums, #flutes, and other instruments, and the poetry was often Rumi’s own verses. The #drumming was meant to create a #rhythm that would help the dervishes achieve a state of ecstasy and union with God."

Here's a compositional idea: 🥑 ADD A HALF MEASURE!

Spice things up rhythmically by chopping an occasional measure in half. For instance, a measure of 2 in 4/4 time, or 3 in 6/8 time.

Examples: “Africa” (Toto), “Nothing Else Matters” (Metallica), “Kiss From A Rose” (Seal), “Wild World” (Cat Stevens), “I Have Nothing” (Whitney Houston), “Jolene” (Dolly Parton)

Here is the full playlist of my July Rhuthm+Nous experiments. Some short excerpts, some more fleshed out, including a full 20 minute set to close out the month. All performed live using the same set of small machines. Recorded in California and Ontario over 7 different days in July 2023. I did a single public performance July 14 under a freeway in Oakland that is not documented here. Raw and swampy for your nether regions.

People often criticize heavy usage of the metronome in practice because of its reputation to create mechanical (non-musical) playing.

I believe that, atleast in the beginning of learning your first instrument, heavy use of the metronome brings more good than harm, especially in the 50-80BPM range.

Practicing with a metronome forces you to listen actively and judge if you are too fast or too slow. It encourages you to audiate, i.e. imagine what something sounds like at a given tempo and can be a good litmus test for whether students are really listening, or just doing the muscle movements.

In my experience, a constant tempo and an absolutely even rhythm isn't the sole culprit of mechanical playing.

Game: AVICII Invector
Platform: Steam

Playtime: 30m

AVICII Invector is a rhythm game. You have a ship, you have to steer in through a futuristic course and hit the right buttons at the right times to the rhythm of Avicii songs, and it helps to be a fan of Avicii, because you're going to be hearing a LOT of Avicii.

There's not a lot to say here. It's not an overly complex idea, it just gets very complicated very quickly at higher levels.

Unfortunately, if you're someone with fine motor control & coordination issues, anything more than "Beginner" mode quickly becomes frustrating.

A lot time in game is spent in triangular tunnels; in Beginner mode, there's only the A button, left stick to to change walls, left or right as required, and the left bumper(!) to hit light-up track lines.

The use of the bumper left me feeling like I was going to drop the controller, so that was bit off-putting.

In easy mode, the game adds the X button. The on-screen icon is a different colour, but the same SHAPE as the wall-change icon. I kept registering it as "move left" and missing the presses.

Even so, I don't mind a rhythm game to kill time here and there, so AVICII Invector is:

3: OK

Game: Hi-Fi RUSH
Platform: Xbox Game Pass PC
Release Date: Jan 25, 2023
Library Date: Jan 28, 2023
Unplayed: 7 days
Playtime: 55m

Hi-Fi RUSH was announced unexpectedly by Bethesda during the Xbox Developer Day on January 25th.

Apparently developed in parallel with Ghostwire: Tokyo (which I love, (5: Excellent)), and given my history with Bethesda games, given it was immediately available with Game Pass, installing it was a no-brainer.

I got stuck into it this morning, and it was every bit as fun as the rumours suggested. It's a third-person rhythm action game, in which your attacks are performed in sync with the music, and if you land the attack on the beat, you do bonus damage.

However, playing for more than 30 minutes, I suddenly encountered an unexpected 2D platform level, which yanked me out of the zone, and left me trying to time jumps just right, with the unexpected context switch.

I like the storyline so far, loving the music, and without that jarring context change, this would have been excellent. Time will tell if I can adjust to the platform levels, or if I need to play with a controller, but it's still a great game, and free if you have a Xbox Game Pass subscription.

Hi-Fi RUSH is:

4: Good

Drums speak too: An examination of modern percussion instruments in the jazz idiom

Jazz has been a leading force in the evolution of music in the United States. The complexity of rhythmic and harmonic languages has grown from the birth of jazz improvisation. Modern percussion instruments played a fundamental role in the development of rhythmic language. Improvised figures between the soloist and sectionals have cultivated a vocabulary still utilized by modern drummers and percussionists today. Moreover, evolving styles matured into a more sophisticated language, demanding a more refined instrument. This presentation explores the development of modern percussion instruments within jazz and improvised music, focusing on the historical and cultural aspects impacting the evolution of percussion instruments. Investigations of stylistic approaches and influences on musical styles will also be examined.

Do [n't] change a hair for me: The art of jazz rubato

This article examines a number of different performances of jazz ballad melodies in order to investigate the nature of expressive timing used by jazz soloists. Three performances of My Funny Valentine and two performances of Naima, taken from commercial recordings by master soloists, are examined. Expressive timing is seen to be a kind of tempo rubato involving a flexibility of melodic rhythm over a steady underlying beat. A typical strategy used is to begin the melody "late" relative to the accompaniment, and speed up over the course of a phrase. This delay-accelerate strategy is modulated in a number of ways. First, the nominal rhythms of motives are modified so as to preserve their categorical identity; below the level of the motive there is more expressive freedom. Second, there is a strong tendency for melodies to align with the accompaniment at cadential locations, serving to clarify hierarchic phrase structure. Finally, notes belonging to the underlying harmonies tend to be displaced more than nonharmonic tones, a tendency which is more pronounced at downbeats. These rhythmic procedures are thus found to be related to musical structure in a variety of ways.

Why do jazz musicians swing their eighth notes?

In jazz, the function of durational inequality at the eighth-note level is the production of anacrusis on the offbeats, thereby generating the sense of forward propulsion and drive thought to typify the rhythmic quality known as “swing.” The common use of relatively “straight” eighth notes by improvising soloists helps to sustain forward momentum, whereas the less even, triplet-like “swing” eighth notes used more frequently by drummers facilitate the perception of a quarter-note beat. Varying the Beat-Upbeat Ratio (BUR)—i.e., moving between straight and swing eighth notes—enables jazz musicians to manipulate the flow of motional energy across a phrase in systematic ways in conjunction with other melodic processes. Analyses of melodic phrases by John Coltrane, Lee Konitz, and Sonny Clark reveal the centrality of such aspects of microrhythmic expression to the affective power of jazz improvisation.

Race and Rhythm: The Social Component of the Swing Groove

Recent explanations of the elusive rhythmic quality known as swing have tended to avoid explicit discussion of race, though use of the term inevitably carries racial meanings. This paper seeks to develop a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between race and rhythm in jazz and black music, more generally. It pursues a rapprochement between a music‐theoretical understanding of the “music itself” and the social and political work it does as a component of identity formation. To this end, it draws upon a “theory of practice” derived from ethnographic social theory and presents a model of social‐interactive processes in music derived from communications theory to clarify the relationship between the aesthetic effects of jazz rhythmic expression, on the one hand, and the ways in which those particular effects are invested with racial meaning, on the other.

Two Concepts of Groove: Musical Nuances, Rhythm, and Genre

Groove, as a musical quality, is an important part of jazz and pop music appreciative practices. Groove talk is widespread among musicians and audiences, and considerable importance is placed on generating and appreciating grooves in music. However, musicians, musicologists, and audiences use groove attributions in a variety of ways that do not track one consistent underlying concept. I argue that there are at least two distinct concepts of groove. On one account, the groove is “the feel of the music” and, on the other, the groove is the psychological feeling (induced by music) of wanting to move one’s body. Further, I argue that recent work in music psychology shows that these two concepts do not converge on a unified set of musical features. Finally, I also argue that these two concepts play different functional roles in the appreciative practices of jazz and popular music. This should cause us to further consider the mediating role genre plays for aesthetic concepts, and provides us with a reason for adopting a more communitarian approach to aesthetics that is attentive to the ways in which aesthetic discourse serves the practices of different audiences.

I love to read #books. My first was Book 5 of the original #CYOA entitled, “The Mystery of Chimney Rock” when I was around four (I still have the book somewhere with a missing cover). By fourteen, I enjoyed reading a non-fiction book entitled simply as “Brain”, and dreamed of becoming a neuroscientist, which sadly remained a dream.

My longest read were #PeterFHamilton's “Pandora's Star” and “Judas Unchained” (more or less 1,000 pages each). My number one favourite is #LynnKurland's “Dreams of Stardust” (I even bought every copy I saw and gave it away).

When it comes to genre, I read anything. In the classics, I love #JaneEyre by Charlotte Brontë. I also read #NeilGaiman's “American Gods”. But I do have genres I favour more than others: #ScienceFiction and #Fantasy. To be more specific, science fiction and fantasy with #TimeTravel and #ParallelWorld elements, if the author can combine it together, even better (like Lynn Kurland's novels: #scifi + fantasy + #romance and sometimes with #paranormal too).

That said, my taste in live-action shows is somewhat similar. And the more complex and/or engaging the story is, the more I love it. Some examples are:

As well as, “Curse of the Azure Bonds” (#ForgottenRealms) and the Krynn series (#DragonLance) by TSR, “Sim Farm”, “Sim City”, “#PrinceOfPersia”, “#ManiacMansion”, “Neverwinter Nights”, “Eye of the Beholder”, “#Ultima” series, and the Carmen Sandiego franchise, for the PC. (*cough*Digger*cough*)

In modern #gaming, I highly recommend #GuildWars2, #StarTrekOnline, #Neverwinter, and the open-source #rhythm game, #Quaver.

For extended reality, or XR, games, I play #Ingress, #PikminBloom, #Orna, and #Qonqr; sometimes #PokemonGo.

Last, but definitely not the least, I am a #Natsari as defined in Acts 24. It means that I believe in the #Torah and the #Messiah.

Rhythm concepts for intermediate producers

If you're not a percussionist, you might find it challenging to add rhythmic interest to your drums and synth riffs.

Rennie Pilgrem has been making amazing breakbeat. The dynamics and punch in the drums is what I miss in pretty much all modern EDM releases. The drums sound amazing here, because they have air to breathe! This track could still use 2.7 dB more headroom before being turned down on YouTube.

Look at these transients! Yo can actually read the drumline from the waveform!

Need a #chopstick expert.
Below you see two kinds, the longer ones being much heavier (approx 40-50 grams), than the one that broke (approx 10-20 grams).

i use chopsticks for #percussion playing (besides eating) and urgently need to find a 2nd pair of those longer, heavier ones. Any ideas, where to look?

In Europe, if possible.

Thank you!
