I just did my first hardware "repair"! One of my dev phones got its screen cracked, so I bought a cheap replacement. Sadly, this replacement was Verizon branded and could not be bootloader unlocked. Luckily, it seems that just by swapping the motherboards I am good to go! Sadly I cannot get ssh / USB Networking to work, but I'll probably figure that out soon enough

Apparently a Polish producer of passenger trains, Newag, added some interesting stuff to the trains' software which made it impossible to start them after servicing by anyone other than the producer. Compared to them, John Deere are amateurs. So far the writeup is in Polish, but I guess this one will blow up quickly.

I still have a fairphone 3, I've had it since 2019, which I guess, unfortunately, is quite long in smartphone years? I've used it a lot, hyperfixated on mobile games all day on my days off. used chargers for the Nintendo switch and Mac.
Now it's barely charging. Have to put it in a weird position between books and tell it to stay right there. Battery isn't great either.
Is this something that can be fixed/replaced or is it cheaper to just buy a new one?

So, this was my favorite toy growing up... A "160-in-One" Electronics Kit from #RadioShack. The kit had instructions on how to build a simple, low-powered broadcast radio (and I, of course, had cut off the jack of a microphone cord, which I stripped and added as an sound input). Not satisfied with the range of my "pirate radio station," I added a few extra capacitors, used a stainless steel window screen as an antenna, and soon the neighbors were complaining to my grandparents. Mission accomplished!

Yet another #win for the argument that a 3D printer should be a common household appliance. I'm sure Panasonic would rather I bought a whole new remote control when the battery cover disappeared but a quick Google search "Panasonic remote battery cover STL" came up with the goods. A 15 minute print using a few cents' worth of filament and here we go!

@thadd This is part of why hobbyists are such a natural counter balance and why it makes sense that #RightToRepair is so much of an existential threat to Apple, John Deere, etc, and why #netneutrality is so much of an existential threat to Verizon, Cox, etc.
Hobbyists and small businesses who do this stuff for passion are often the technology Credit Union alternative to the big banks with their big fees.

@TheConversationUS after being shunned by #Tesla when trying to get a crashed car repaired back in ~2018 I was lucky enough to find a technician in Jordan who now does all the data & diagnosis on my car here in NZ. He works on people's cars all over the world and somehow manages to stay ahead of Tesla themselves. It's wonderful how easy it is to diagnose these smart cars when you have access. It's ridiculous the lengths you have to go to to access what should be freely available. #righttorepair

Today I learned Canada’s parliament is working on Bill C-244, an amendment to the Copyright Act that allows for circumvention of DRM for purposes of repair, whether by yourself or a third-party. This is a general exemption that applies to anything with software locks on it, which is a good thing. It passed unanimously in the House of Commons, and is now making its way through the Senate.
An earlier version of the bill even had an exemption for the trade of DRM circumvention tools for repair purposes, but this was removed due to worries about international trade:
“CUSMA, which includes Canada's strictest TPM obligations, only allows the trade of circumvention tools in very limited situations, and repair is not one of them.”
Even then, it’s great to see this bill, and it paves the way for better right-to-repair laws here in Canada.

Finally putting my x230 to rest, the last `sudo poweroff`. Hardware is failing beyond the point that makes continuing to repair it worthwhile.
On this laptop I deployed nearly 60 servers (most for at risk groups), 12 tech art projects (solo & collab, some toured worldwide), & gave many lectures & workshops.
If there was ever a loyal and electric steed, it was this x230. It ran #Debian & was good.

Ich will hier keine Diskussion über MAC vs PC führen, nur mein Erlebnis mit dem Elitebook von #HP beschreiben. Ich hab die letzen Tage Memory Bluescreens bekommen. Bin sonst mit der #OptaneSSD und 64GB RAM bei einem Core i7 zufrieden. Hält natürlich nicht mehr mit einem M1 MAC mit.
Was ich eigentlich sagen wollte. Heute kam von HP das 2x32GB RAM per Express. 5 Schrauben auf, altes RAM raus, neues rein, und wieder gestartet. Keine 5 Minuten.

So this is kind of embarrassing to admit, but - we left cooked rice in the rice cooker, and it got moldy.
I wanted to buy a new inner lid, but it's out of stock on the Zojirushi website for this model.
I was able to disassemble the inner lid into three pieces: hard plastic, metal, and (I think) silicone.
How do I clean the silicone so that I'm not going to be incubating mold spores every time I make rice? Is it possible?

@cstross There is probably a lot of truth to that. But don't underestimate the ability of the average car nut to have fun. People are already putting recycled electric bike drive trains into cars etc.
The necessary reverse engineering and jailbreaking of the control electronics and the availability of aftermarket replacements is also getting better.
Important though to get these efforts out of the legal grey zone they are often operating in by supporting #RightToRepair
