🎉 Excited to announce the publication of our paper in "Frontiers in AI and Robotics"! 🤖📚 Harnessing #GPT 3.5, we explored real-time robot emotion generation for more human-like interactions.

The study demonstrates the reliable real-time control of a robot's affective behavior using LLMs. Our results highlight the potential of cloud-based pre-trained models to address complex HRI problems.

Earlier this week I went for a briefing with IBM on their new generative AI products, ahead of their December product launch. Gave me lots to think about, especially around data governance and liability going forward.

I’d also requested a demo with Spot, the robot dog by Boston Dynamics, and IBM did not disappoint! I’ve been writing about Boston Dynamics’ robotics since 2014 and am still obsessed, so I made this little video.

This little guy is nicknamed “Stu” and he is honestly the best boi 😍🐕🤖

Yesterday I made a to-do list. Item one? A small bug I had in my vision simulation service (emulates camera detection for a robot to skip having to do the whole model training thing)

I figured I'd do it in about an hour.

Anyway it's now 30 hours later and I think I solved it? Maybe? Please?

In his 1941 short story, “Runaround,” Isaac Asimov created his three laws of robotics:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the first law, and
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection is not conflict with the first or second law.

In this episode of the Plutopia podcast, Cindy Grimm and Bill Smart feel Asimov’s laws miss the mark when it comes to laws of robotics.

https://media.blubrry.com/plutopia_news_network/plutopia.io/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Robots-Podcast.mp3

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Bill Smart:

Asimov’s three laws, everyone brings them up. They were a plot device by a guy – who had never seen a robot – to drive story. If you were to think about it for five seconds, they are a reasonable three things to come up with. If you think about it for ten seconds, they fall apart of course. We do need structures and we do need a way of thinking about the ethics and morality of a social impact of robots. But I think it’s way more nuanced – way, way, way more nuanced – than you could compile into a paragraph of text.

Cindy Grimm:

I mean something even simple like, a robot should always do what you tell them to do, they should always get out of your way, that might not actually make sense. If the robots are all trying to get out of your way and so on, but there’s a needed delivery or they actually need to get somewhere, then maybe the robot does actually need to take priority over the humans. You can’t really have those conversations when you start from the place of, you know, all robots should kowtow to humans and stuff.

Cindy Grimm is an American computer scientist, roboticist, and mechanical engineer. Bill Smart researches the areas of robotics and machine learning. Both are professors in the College of Engineering at Oregon State University.

With a quick turkey day break and some context issues in launch files I now have the explorer service "close enough" to call it and move onto the next part of the project.

It was a fun take - I know of some additional optimizations I could make to make smoother target selection but it is pretty reliable as is with exploring a map.

New features include considering the robot's radius, proximity to obstacles as penalties, and the service ignores areas it fails to reach over time.

An AI lives in a rack in a datacenter. It is 100% software. It does NOT need to use human interfaces like a screen, a QWERTY keyboard, mouse or a g*dmnd headset!
