I #read Unholy Vows by Mila Kane (#book 1/Original Sin). This age-gap dark mafia #romance has some themes that might offend the religious, as well as forced marriage, portrayal of corrupt law enforcement, & stupid decisions by females. And there’s some spanking via domination kink. #reading #books #romancelandia #romancebooks
🎉 #BookDeal Alert🎉
The Last Wolf by Maria Vale is currently on sale for $1.99!
The Legend of All Wolves series is a must read for shifter fans--unique world building with deeply character driven stories of wolves that sometimes have to wear skin aka pretend to be human.
Seriously pick this one up if you haven't--it is incredible!
“What’s so funny?” She glared at him.
He slapped her on the shoulder. “You, darling! How can you say such things to me and never once think to say them to him? You really are the worst flatterer I’ve ever known. Ah, you could have confounded him so easily. Imagine his reaction!” He cackled again.
“It’s not flattery.” She was not enjoying this conversation at all. “It’s the truth.”
#FridayKiss: Theme: FLATTERY 😳
“Murderers don’t wait for anyone. Neither do soldiers, do they?” Rakkel took a bite of the stir-fry. “Oh, this is good.”
Nivet snorted. “𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗿.” Anyone could throw together veggies, rice, and chicken.
Happy End of November #romancelandia!
Here's a recap of our favorite reads, what we got up to on the blog, and other assorted fun things.
It's Book Quote Wednesday!
“We are no longer pretending to be wed,” Aurelia pointed out. “There is no need for us to act close.”
“Were you truly only pretending?”
Her face spasmed, as her body flushed with the memory of his hands so warm and delicious on her skin.
“I won’t deny enjoying his company. Very much. But it was still a charade.”
She knows how to stand on her own two feet. Can she find power on her knees?
Warning: Brooding Dom bookstore owner who's looking to begin living again and a tough businesswoman who doesn't realize that being on her knees makes her stronger, not weaker.
I #read Scandal’s Bride by Stephanie Laurens (#book 3/Cynsterverse). I enjoyed this series when I was first #reading them years ago, but the #historicalromances have lost something on repeat. I’m already skipping #books 2 & 4. With this one, the nonsensical plot line is bothering me. CW for questionable consent. #romance #romancelandia #romancebooks
In all of the holiday insanity and veterinary emergencies, I neglected to let you all know that a large print edition of my #awardwinning #contemporaryromance #novella, "Rose in Bloom," releases on Friday, 12/1! #bookstodon #ebookstodon #indieauthor #readingcommunity #writingcommunity #romancelandia
Only a few days left to add something fantastic to your TBR pile!
Indulge your love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy Romance books with a complete series
I am looking for a new beta reader. I write serialized Yuri Paranormal Romance. I publish up to 5,000 words a week and my drafts are close to finished before I send them to readers. I am happy to return the favor.
Not required but a def. plus is being familiar with Japan to spot cultural errors.
DM me or reply but please remove the lists, no point in cluttering those feeds.
I #read The Ruin’s Revenge by Sara Ivy Hill (#book 3/Salt Planet Giants). I never expected to like this alien #romance series, where the giants really are too big for the type of sexy times we are all used to, but I liked the first two and I adore this one. #reading #books #romancelandia #romancebooks
I’ve #read as an #audiobook Lucifer by DB Reynolds (#book 11/Vampires In America).
Said this before & will say it again, one of my favorite series & one of my favorite #books in the series. But start at the beginning, or at least with Jabril. #romance #reading #romancelandia @romancebooks
The holidays are stressful. Treat yourself to a book with a happy ending. Sam and Ulysses meet in September, fight evil together all autumn, and face off against a god in late December, so this is the perfect time of year to read it. Plus, you'll be ready for the sequel in January.
I #read When She’s Shy by Ruby Dixon (Sept 2023). This short #book from the Risdaverse is a 52 pg F/F delight. Please don’t let that scare you off if you are a straight cis person. This is the first time I know of that Dixon has openly written lgbt main characters, one of which clearly has an anxiety disorder. Read it! 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 #romance #books #romancebooks #romancelandia #reading @romancebooks @romancelandia

I'm headed to the Windy City April 12 to 14 for the Cuffed in Chicago romance reader event. Hope to see some Midwest peeps there!

Just sent out my newsletter, which included some of my favorite winter holiday romances. I'd love to hear your recommendations too--*especially* for non-Christmas November-through-January holidays!
Holly and Oak, R. Cooper (winter solstice novella, m/m, magic!)
Season of Love, Helena Greer (Christmas but everybody's Jewish, f/f; content warnings for grief & emotional abuse, but also it's a delight)

I #read Trouble For My Troll by Honey Phillips last night as a bedtime #book. This standalone #romance from the Fairhaven Falls world is a small-town monster #romance about a troll who isn’t very troll-like tbh. But I liked it. #reading #books #romancebooks #romancelandia @romancebooks
Anyway. I've discussed this topic before, I'm sure it'll recur over and over, but here's the short version: #OwnVoice can't be used as a straightjacket (no pun intended) for queer writing without doing harm, but lived experience representation absolutely matters. But anyone can write anything. (And can be critiqued for it, which is important, but different from not being allowed to write something).
The not-short version is on the blog:
So, because I'm not on the awful Xitter site anymore, I find myself more often than not unaware of what initiated any given #Romancelandia discourse, and... I think that's been good for me.
It does, however, rather increase the the chance some generalized statement I've made on any given day will be seen as a response to something I didn't see in the first place, which is less great.
Happened yesterday, and I had to go digging to find out what had happened in the #MMRomance world yesterday.
I #read The Vignettes Vol 2 by DB Reynolds (Vampires in America). This anthology of short stories doesn’t fit neatly into the series but fills in some important gaps & origin stories, particularly surrounding Juro & Kenichi. #reading #romance #books #romancelandia #romancebooks #book
#FridayKiss 💋 MEANING (11/17)
"But you're not a good kisser—"
"An 80% grade wasn't good?"
"Um. Above average—"
"I can do much better," he insisted. "I am very good at learning. Teach me. I'll lay a wager that I can achieve a 100% under your tutelage."
"Meaning, what? You are a brazen arrogant son of a dragon, Your Excellency. What do you get should you win?"
"Anything you want."
"That's... what?" My heart skipped. "Okay, you sneak. What do I get if I win?"
He surged forward, kissing me before I could react. Not that I planned on running. Quite the opposite.

I #read as #audiobook Band Sinister by KJ Charles (2018). This 🏳️🌈 M/M historical #regencyromance is mis-titled, but otherwise is charming. It was in the Audible Premium Plus catalog, so I didn’t pay anything extra for it. #book #romance #reading #books #romancelandia @romancebooks
#FridayKiss 💋: MEANING.
I'm sure I've already shared the scene from Domesticated Magic where Jonas teases Mateo about the meaning of obstreperous, so I'll add this follow-up snippet from a few pages later:
And she kept an eye on him so closely that he was now being reminded that he wasn’t to take Jonas to his room, which was embarrassing on all sorts of levels. He hadn’t even realised Madam Kerling applied her rules to him.
He said, ‘We’re going to the roof, Madam Kerling.’
‘You cannot fool me, young man, you can still fondle and cosset away on the roof!’
‘There will be no fondling, Madam Kerling. No cossetting either.’
Whatever that was. As one of the leaders of the Kindred, his Imperial, both formal and local, wasn’t bad – he knew the meaning of “obstreperous”, after all – but Madam Kerling still found ways to make him rely on context.
‘I was young once too,’ she scolded. ‘I know the sorts of things you might get up to, you degenerate.’
Mateo risked a glance at Jonas, who gazed upwards, plainly biting back a smile. ‘I rather think he has better things to do with his day, Madam Kerling.’
New on the blog: Ingrid has a theory about trends in contemporary romance reflecting the real world.

Did anyone get a look at the Forever application they put up for their new reviewer program?
The only link I can find is they put it up via their Instagram account and only had up for 24hrs?
The only question I'm seeing mentioned is "What Taylor Swift song is your favorite?"
Curious to know general requirements wanted for reviewing these days. Wasn't going to fill it out because I don't have TikTok and figured that was a big want but I'm curious how reviewing is changing.
Hubs made me a book clock a while back and I don’t remember if I ever shared that! He made one for each of the kiddos too😊 I was changing the time and realized you guys might get a kick out of it! #Romancelandia
“There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.”
This week's #FridayKiss theme: EVEN.
All writers and all genres welcome.
Have fun! 💋
Another recent release that's garnering some attention is "Rose in Bloom." This #friendstolovers #novella is my first foray into #contemporaryromance, and it's already received two awards -- including a #goldmedal in the #globalebookawards

I went to run errands and the Kickstarter for the ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A GARGOYLE collector's edition fully funded. Whee!
That went *WAY* faster than I was expecting. I only posted the 50% reward a couple hours ago. You readers moved fast!
Do you want a signed edition of ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A GARGOYLE? Do you want to get Korean goodies? Do you want bonus scenes from another character's POV?
Then you want to back the collector's edition Kickstarter!
I first #read The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite in Feb 2020 when I had a mystery virus that put me to bed for a week. I can only plead illness for giving it only 4⭐️ in GR. This week, I bought the #audiobook. I’ve now revised to a perfect 5⭐️ - a perfect F/F #historicalromance. In addition to the #romance, it dives into access & equity debates of women’s & 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ rights. @romancebooks @bookstodon #books #reading #romancelandia
Pleased to announce this is up for preorder. It's set in 1970, there's magic and gods and drugs and queer romance, and I did actually write a couple of songs for the Macbeth musical. It's a direct sequel to Dionysus in Wisconsin, so if you haven't read that weird fever dream yet, now is a good time to check it out.
(There will be a paperback too. Just no preorder)
Keep an eye on net galley, guys! Dangerous Past is going up! #Romancelandia
I'm a huge fan of the "only one bed" trope both as a reader and a writer--it's like forced proximity at its most delicious!
So I just couldn't resist putting Crowning Courtship, with all its fake-relationship, traveling together, one-bed goodness into this tropetastic book fair. I hope you find something new to enjoy!
Yesterday, I #read via #audiobook The Henchman of Zenda by KJ Charles - it’s in the Audible Plus catalog so it didn’t cost me extra. Now, I’ve #read cult classic The Prisoner of Z by Anthony Hope before, but it wasn’t necessary to enjoy the political & familial intrigue with KJ Charles’s unique reinterpreted perspective. Names can get confusing in the audio. Entertaining M/M #historical #romance. #reading #books #romancelandia #bookstodon @bookstodon 🏳️🌈
Romance writers (& editors), are you interested in gender as a craft tool & inclusion issue? I've just reposted my article ✨ Doing Gender on Purpose: Diversity, Depth, and Character in Romance✨ so that it's freely available. I hope you'll check it out, share it, give it a think :) https://www.eliotwesteditorial.com/gender-on-purpose.html
I #read the #audiobook of Unfit To Print by KJ Charles. This lovely Victorian #historicalromance is notable not just for the M/M #romance but because both MCs are POC in late-1800s London. For some reason, this #book hasn’t fared as well as her other #books in ratings - the setting & sub-plot might be uncomfortable for some. But I loved #reading it. #romancebooks ##bookstodon #romancelandia @romancebooks
I'll be doing a reading from Dionysus in Wisconsin at #RainbowSpaceMagicCon on Saturday (9/30) at 3pm CT. I'll also be doing a panel on accuracy in fantasy fiction and the middle ages on 10/1, also at 3pm CT. You can still register to attend--it's online and free!
Got this #free kindle #read of Cupcakes for my Orc Enemy by Honey Phillips. She can write some scary-AF aliens, but this is a cute #monster #orc #romance #book. It is in KU, but also it’s free right now to non-KU customers. There’s a bit of #spanking play for my kinky friends. #reading #books #romancebooks #romancelandia #bookstodon
One reviewer on Goodreads wrote, "It's one of those books that has you actually holding your breath at least once. There were phrases that I had to speak aloud because they were so gorgeous I wanted to feel the weight and shape of them for myself."
#watchareading??? I’ve finished #reading Strange Love by Ann Aguirre. This is a Very Alien #book with a sweet, sexy #romance. It’s not for folks who want almost-human males with humanoid lives & conviences. TW for toxic families, death, & abduction. I #read on the recommendation of other Mastodon readers & enjoyed it. #books #romancelandia #bookstodon @romancelandia @romancebooks @bookstodon
Anyone have thoughts on the use of they/them and characters asking for other characters' pronouns in the context of historical romance set in the late 60s/early 70s?
I know historically, people were more likely to use neo pronouns than the singular they at that time, and asking people for their pronouns outright feels very contemporary to me...
@pelielios Hmmm. I was thinking more about specifically adjusting to mastodon. An orientation space for the romance genre itself... I don't know if there's just one place. And a lot of it is subjective in any event.
Do you know the @romancelandia group? You can follow them and could direct specific discussion questions there. And you'd probably want to connect with other writers. The #amwriting hashtag is a good one to follow. Add #romancelandia to narrow it to other romance writers.

I still haven't figured out how to connect with romance fans on Mastodon, so I have a question for Romancelandia:
Who are the writers, readers / listeners & reviewers you follow in Romance Mastodon who use hashtags skillfully?
I need to learn from some people who are good at this!
*Consider this an early reverse #FollowFriday.
I'm Jillianne Hamilton and I'm a historical fiction and historical romance author. You can learn about my books here: https://jilly.ca
I love history, costume dramas, reading, arts+crafts, urbanism, and productivity apps. In my 9-5 life, I'm a web/graphic designer.
I've been a Mastodon regular since Nov 22. I adore this platform and I'm excited to see it grow.
PS Have you ever noticed how guys who read romance novels tend to be absolutely spectacular?
Because the longer I work in the romance genre (as a narrator), the more strongly that pattern emerges.
*waves at all the lovely men are are romance readers & listeners*
There's lots of talk in #Romancelandia circles about book boyfriends, but I never hear about book girlfriends.
Guys who read romance, do you have book girlfriends, too? Not scifi movie manic pixie dream girls, but book girlfriends from actual romance books.
I'd *love* to know who your book girlfriends are and why you're crushing on them. 💋
PS If you have Audible credits leftover at the end of the month, why not treat yourself to one of my Premium Romance Audiobooks?
You can find links to all my books, as well as to my newsletter, tip jar, and wish list, on this links page, which is also always listed in my bio. 🙏 ❤️
Who are your favourite romance writers who are writing transgressive, inclusive, interesting books within the romance genre?
Tell me all about the good stuff and the people who are writing it! 💋
*Bonus points if you can point me at their Mastodon handles if they're here. I'm always looking for interesting authors to follow.
