I've discussed this topic before, I'm sure it'll recur over and over, but here's the short version: #OwnVoice can't be used as a straightjacket (no pun intended) for queer writing without doing harm, but lived experience representation absolutely matters. But anyone can write anything. (And can be critiqued for it, which is important, but different from not being allowed to write something).

I'm sure I've already shared the scene from Domesticated Magic where Jonas teases Mateo about the meaning of obstreperous, so I'll add this follow-up snippet from a few pages later:

And she kept an eye on him so closely that he was now being reminded that he wasn’t to take Jonas to his room, which was embarrassing on all sorts of levels. He hadn’t even realised Madam Kerling applied her rules to him.

He said, ‘We’re going to the roof, Madam Kerling.’

‘You cannot fool me, young man, you can still fondle and cosset away on the roof!’

‘There will be no fondling, Madam Kerling. No cossetting either.’

Whatever that was. As one of the leaders of the Kindred, his Imperial, both formal and local, wasn’t bad – he knew the meaning of “obstreperous”, after all – but Madam Kerling still found ways to make him rely on context.

‘I was young once too,’ she scolded. ‘I know the sorts of things you might get up to, you degenerate.’

Anyone have thoughts on the use of they/them and characters asking for other characters' pronouns in the context of historical romance set in the late 60s/early 70s?

I know historically, people were more likely to use neo pronouns than the singular they at that time, and asking people for their pronouns outright feels very contemporary to me...
