It is a bed of roses! Some years ago I read that salvias might help prevent black spot on roses, so I interplanted my roses with salvias. I see no evidence that the bit about black spot is true, but the purple of the salvias amid the stems of the roses is quite lovely.

I'm so excited to be actually at home this year, when it happens. We used to travel around pentecost as school is off for two weeks at this time and so I often missed the full bloom.

It's a variety called #Veilchenblau. Over 10 years ago I found a half dead plant in a local home improvement store and - recognizing the variety - bought it for pennies. It now is the highlight of our (very small) garden.

After an unusually mild winter, and temperatures in the 70s in early March, in mid-March it suddenly dropped to 17F. All of my roses had started to leaf out and then died back, a few of them all the way to the ground. (Luckily, on their own roots rather than grafted.)

But they all are recovering nicely. The first to bloom, several weeks earlier than normal, is Tess of the D'Urbervilles from David Austin. The rest will be following soon.
